Last thread there was another anon telling me that I haven't improved a single bit over the last year and others from older threads saying that I have autism and that I refuse to improve even though they claim to have tried to help me numerous times.
Not sure if it's safer to stay here or if those anons would be relieved if I moved out.

That is a question with a nebulous answer.

I have mostly been only grinding up until now. I don't do that many real life and photo studies and am only beginning to read a few books I put on my backlog now. That combined with what is perhaps natural ineptitude.
I have mostly been approaching art as a hobby up until now and am trying to inch towards a more focused learning attitude, though those efforts are being held back by procrastination.

Pretty sure I am aware of most of it, but actually acting upon things that help me improve is something else. NGMI, or whatever buzzword fits best.

>>4156964
I don't think natural ineptitude is really a thing but I reckon your lack of studies based on real life subject matter is likely the one big thing holding you back.

Just generally speaking I think alot of people here are to focused on their end goals and want every drawing to be a comlete artistic piece when in reality they could likely make more long term gains if they put that desire on the back burner and accepted that from beginning to end you will need to invest a few thousand hours before you'll really get what you truly want out of art.

>> No.4156975

Really dumb beginner question: the wood art boards you staple canvas to, the ones used in the NMA Russian Course, are those reusable? Once you're done a piece you can just take it off and then put on a new canvas/paper/whatever, right?

This.
Not construction anon but I rarely do finished shit and just do studies and copies of better artist and studying the shit im interested at to get really good to be able to draw them from imagination with reasonable skill. If you want to be a good artist pretty fast just do studies of better artist and grind away with shit you have trouble with, trust me it helped me improve pretty fast, could see progress in a single week.

Mostly grinding with unfinished sketches has been my aim until now, though I refrained from studying my favorite ((anime)) artists because I feel that is generally frowned upon, so I only referenced some poses at best.
About the real life studies, are photos of real life all right to get by or is there no way around drawing the real thing in front of you? If so, are just inanimate objects and rooms ok or are models that important because I am obviously in no position to get one. A few anons kept insisting on it.

i havent draw muscles in a while so i might be off, but the main purpose of studying anatomy is knowing where go each part so when you are doing your dolls/mannequin its easier and the better you get at knowing your anatomy the less you will need of dolls/landmarks

the muscles in the right arm are fucked up the delt joint is around the right clavicle and part of the scapula and it attachs to the right side of the arm between the biceps and triceps, you have to learn where they attach so is easier to know how the muscles change accordingly to their rotation otherwise you will end up drawing sausages for limbs

There's something about fast gesture challenges that most people seem to miss. The point isn't to get you to draw faster, but to draw less. Drawing less means you have to be more eloquent with the lines you put down. You have to think about them, and be deliberate.

So don't assess your gestures by how finished they are, or by how many strokes you were able to lay down. Look instead at how much your drawings communicate the posture, and how quickly your mind was able to understand what you were looking at and how you were able to condense information: where the landmarks are, how weight is distributed, which foot is load-bearing, what direction is everything facing, what is coming towards you and what is receding, etc.

Not all of your gestures answer those questions. Doesn't necessarily mean they are poorly done. What it does mean is that your priorities are probably incorrect.

Some people put in 8h+ per day and improve very quickly, others draw a few times a week for short periods of time, get frustrated and leave.

You should spend some time getting the lineart down, before attempting any rendering - you'll save yourself a lot of work.

Have a look at the shapes you're attempting to replicate - look at where her right thigh overlaps her left thigh. It seems you're drawing what you think should be there, instead of what you're seeing on the reference.

Another round of timed figure/gesture drawings. This time with more Vilppu.

Stupid question: How am I supposed to go from these to a more finished piece? Is it just a matter of refining? Like, keep going, adding more detail and rendering?

>>4157901
Once upon a time, I played video games every day, for hours at a time. Then I quit. I play occasionally now, but since I've stopped playing I don't enjoy them as much.

Once upon a time, I spent all my free time on facebook. Then I quit. Now, I go on occasionally, but I don't enjoy it any more. (Though I wasn't enjoying it much anyway before either, but I still went on.)

I used to read, once upon a time. Then those other two things took over. I've picked it up again and, at least for one of my books, have been enjoying it again.

I used to hate drawing. I was never any good at it. Now, I've drawn a picture every day since January 1st, and I find myself drawing more than even the single drawing. It took a while, but eventually I started to like it. (I even can draw pictures that look semi-not-bad! It's a pity they don't look like what they're supposed to though...)

I used to go outside a lot, before facebook. I played several sports. Then, I started staying inside and not doing anything with my life. Then I quit facebook, and eventually started trying to go outside more. Now, I love going outside.

Point is, you can learn to like doing things. Even if you have to force yourself to do them at first, Intention creates Interest, and Intention + Interest creates Passion. What other anon is saying is, would you rather enjoy and be passionate about something unproductive like video games, or something productive?

That's not to say you have to never play video games, but it's a suboptimal choice.

No one's saying you have to be passionate about video games, but implying that you should cut them from your life entirely is overly dramatic. It's essentially like asking someone to cut sex because bringing another human into this fucked up world is a morally reprehensible act.

Not every moment of your day has to be spent being productive, it's completely okay to unwind with a game if that's what you enjoy doing. Trying to guilt people into being a workaholic is why Japan has such a massively high suicide rate. You can't create sustainable people that way.

There's an old adage that says, "wasted time is not time wasted."

Not to mention there's more than one way to enjoy video games, some of which can and do enrich your life in the same ways that reading books can. As works of media, there's plenty of room for interpretation, literary analysis, some games can help exercise your procedural memory - which is a transferable skill (see: Receiver). I mean sure, if you're just brainlessly turning on your console to watch the big man slap monsters with an axe, then yeah you should probably not play games.

Not everyone is cut out for everything. Some people are, by their nature, better suited to expressing themselves through a guitar than through a stylus, and they may have reached 60 before realizing it. Think about where your initial motivation came from, where it might have gone, and why it went where it did. You might learn where to find new motivation, or you may find that you've been on the wrong path and should thus reorient.

>>4158475
Figure out -- really cerebrate here, ok -- how badly you want to learn to draw. Do you really want to learn to draw, or do you merely think you want to learn to draw? What gave you this impulsion? If you really want to do a thing, you can and will make the time for a thing.

Seriously, there's no way you don't have an hour you can free up if you actually want to draw.

And if you don't then you clearly have other priorities. And if drawing isn't enough of a priority to dedicate an hour to then maybe drawing isn't for you.

But, again, I don't believe you. You just have other things you're doing which you think are necessary but are not. I took stock of my day when I thought "I don't have enough time to draw" and freed up 2 hours after like 10 mins of thinking about my priorities.

A lot of the time the eyes end up a lot higher up on the face than they need to, thus elongating the rest of the skull so that they don't look out of place.

Hmm tried that but it looked like trash.
Looked it up some more and found a painterly approach and a drawing approach.
The drawing approach mainly focused on the seperation of light and shadow shapes, but that didnt work so well for me either.
The painterly approach mainly works with texture as far as I can tell, so I made a shitty texture brush and that got the best result out of the bunch... at least for my skill-level.

Requesting advice on how this could look better and stupid mistakes pointed out.

Some of my own thoughts:
> Only indicator of distance to the other islands is the size of objects, could add sth like clouds/haze in between or make them more blue-ish
> Faulty perspective (vertical stuff being vertical despite looking down a bit)
> Corn looks flat and boring, not sure what to do about it except adding some plants at the edge
> Could have more and bolder shades
> Need to learn drawing people, person and cat are mostly traced from photos I took
> Must be more I'm missing

Thanks in advance.

There’s definitely problems with the drawing itself but the biggest things that jumps out to me is that the values are all too similar and everything’s too soft and low contrast. Turn it to grayscale and zoom way out. I would also work on shadow shapes (outline the areas that are in shadow and design their shape a bit rather than soft brushing them in, right now you don’t really have any distinguishable shadows at all). I’m not at my computer but I can try a paint over later if someone else hasn’t already. Also your green is too green, most foliage is really a darker yellow color rather than a direct green like you’re using.

Paint over would be very much apprciated if you have the time and feel like it.
One thing about the colours: I've been drawing on an ipad but when I looked at it on my laptop the colours were quite different and a lot colder. So I tried adjusting a bit, which probably makes it worse in the end when looking at it on a proper device. It's that version I uploaded.
Still doesn't change the thing about similar values and low contrast though.

I'm grateful for all advice, hope I still have potential somehow that can unfold.

I recently started a figure drawing class on the cheap, and am currently trying to get down the proportions of the torso. I've noticed a few bad habits I have, and was wondering if /beg/ had any suggestions on how to break them.

>I make torso waists too thin or thick
>I often make limbs too short, or (on occasion) too long
>I straighten out the pose, or fuck up the center line
>I fuck up on positioning women's breasts, or men's pectorals

I've started laying my drawings over screenshots of the pose I used to pinpoint my fuck-ups, and that's been extremely valuable. Hopefully over time I'll get better at picking them out with my naked eye.

It really depends on what you've tried to draw. If to look at this as a regular normie:

- hands are too small and thin, especially the wrists.
- her(?) torso is grows somewhere on the right side of the body
- make her hair bigger and fluffy. Right now it looks as if she(?) put a toilet paper on her skull
- her(?) wrist should start at the lower side of the pelvis
- legs are too short. Upper and lower side (not including feet) should be the same size as a torso.

Start with simple clearly defined forms like cubes, cylinders etc.
>Add little lines in between them to define each form?
Yes and no, adding little lines to indicate form isn't gonna do much if you're unaware of the larger form, the "little lines" are essentially just edges of the Form that are getting lost.
So the basic forms are really your bread and butter

I'd definitely like to draw from imagination, but I have so little understanding of form or volume and a very limited visual library. I was hoping that the figure drawing class would help with that, as well as force me to break out of symbol drawing. I've already paid for the course, so I may as well finish it, but do you have any recommendations for specifically practicing drawing from imagination?

>Draw from reference
>Compare with reference, it's not quite right so I overlay the reference and fix what's wrong
>End up with basically a perfect image in the sense that all proportions are right and lines are where they should be
>Feel like a fraud because I've effectively produced a traced image now even though I started out just constructing it from scratch

I want to get better, and identifying mistakes by doing the overlay is so useful, but I feel like garbage afterward because the image that is on my canvas isn't "me" as such.
Am I just being unreasonable?

I've finally become adept enough at drawing hands to draw them reliably from memory, and have moved onto heads and faces, and have hit another roadblock. I really like drawing in segmented shapes as you can see illustrated, but I don't know how to apply this knowledge to learning how to draw faces. Any recommendations?

>> No.4161118

>>4160952
Seperate them.
Draw from reference, make a copy of the drawing and do what you do with the overlay, identify mistakes, and then redraw it from reference again.

FIrst of all, resize your pictures

Anyway, the face can be divided into parts and therefore segmented pretty easily.
>>4159398 is an example of how Loomis does it. I also like to keep the planes of the face fairly separate when I try to construct one. So the side plane and the front plane are two distinct "boxes" in my mind which helps separate them.

Disclaimer : I am the worst /beg/ in the thread and you should absolutely not listen to me.
Read Loomis or some other book that talks about it.

Your shapes are OK, but you should try breaking various objects down into shapes instead of just drawing them on their own.

Also, you shouldn't draw boxes as though you can see the back side (though there's no harm in knowing where it's supposed to be).

How do I make it so when I’m drawing on digital my lines don’t continuously look like they are different thickness and opacity? I keep going over the same line so many times and it ends up looking dirty as fuck, so it looks like I chicken scratched the whole thing. Also lines look really trembly when I do long ones, maybe because I’m doing them too slowly? If I do them faster I can’t “aim” them right and I have to do them slower.

Man. I just came back to /beg/ after a couple months without drawing.I remember giving you some advice and also editing some of your stuff, like that green goblin and the elf.
You have obviously improved since then (like the lineart for example), but I still still think your biggest problem is making stuff way too exaggerated in a way that screams "WESTERN ART!!"
The muscles in her belly look like a weird knotted rope and she doesn't seem to have an actual bellybutton. Eye should be covered by the hair instead of jutting out. Clow shoes make her look goofy and "WESTERN!!!"

Anyway, I still think you are doing great. Just keep in mind you should exaggerate a bit less and create pleasing compositions and framing.

Ty anon, I still struggle with lower arms hands legs and proportions whenever I start doing quick gestures, here is today from imagination.
I think my problem is that I most of the time I do lines without thinking and I’m going too fast my brain can’t keep up, I need to slow down I guess.

It's actually a baphomet. I'm always pestering anons and writers requesting a story about a baphomet from MGE being aged up with magic into an adult. Time passed by and I decided to do it myself.
Next drawing I have in mind is either another drawing of her on bed but on a different angle, or her dressed up as a nun and praying.

Thanks. I didn't try to intentionally exaggerate anything, or folow some western paradigm. This one I actually used an asian artist as soft reference (I didn't draw from any of his pics directly, but I had his works open, and I browsed through them, observing how he handles different bodyparts and stuff).

Bellybutton is supposed to be above the belly piercing.

Well, the parts of the eyes that are covered are actually covered, or you mean her bans should be lower?
