**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Okay now this is just too much even with all the whackjobs the site brings in.
Why are there no sclera? Why put in ovals that are the complete antithesis of reflective anime eyes? Why is the right side of the hair different from the left? Why are there no mammaries? Why are there no curves? Why are the hands small? What led to this? None of this makes sense. How does this work? Someone please tell me how this came to be. The fucking loli Nico poster is less confusing than this.

I started drawing today. The previous thread was talking about copying references and applying Loomis. I gave it a try. Are my heads correct so far? I hope to learn lots here.

>> No.4152988

>>4152938
the perspective of your brow lines are not correct. the brow line is where the top of the eye (hence brow) should meet, but you're just kind of wildly placing the eyes wherever. The brow line is the equator of the sphere, you should be able to draw lines of longitude and latitude on a sphere in any position accurately. If not, study perspective. For example, in the bottom left one, your brow line points upwards when it should really be more flat/ downwards and line up with the top of the eyes. The top right is the closest, but think of the face as more of a plane with many different surfaces rather than just a round sphere.

if you're just starting out, i wouldn't recommend doing this exercise. the point of the exercise is to deconstruct the stylization of anime into real world perspective. you won't learn from the deconstruction if you're doing it incorrectly, and you can't do it correctly until you learn proper perspective. i suppose theoretically you could pick up perspective intuitively if you continue to do this, but it's much faster to just learn it separately on it's own

Alright. I skimmed through Norling book in the artbook thread. Nothing in it seemed foreign to me. I think I understand it enough, but drawing it is a different beast. I understand the concept of how the eyes should be drawn, but actually drawing them to be different level/shape/size is hard atm. I didn't spend much time on these either desu. Quick one-offs really.

Would you be able to do this one as an example for me? This one had me wondering the most. The head down, eyes up confuses me I guess.

align the center of the side sphere with the top of the eye, works better like this usually than reaching for styled eyebrows

in the fingernails and the chain links near the choker the lines fade near the ends like with a pencil, but in animation the lines are cleaned up so that the width might vary but the opacity is 100% everywhere. so if you want it to look like an actual frame from animation, you have to use a brush with pressure opacity and pressure fade disabled.

it's probably easier in other software, but i just tried adjusting the contrast in photoshop and had to put the linework on a white background for this to work:
>put an empty layer below the line layer, fill it with white
>use 'merge layer' to flatten the line onto the white layer
>set the layer blending mode on this new layer to 'Multiply'
>go to Image -> Adjustments -> Levels and drag the grey arrow in the middle towards the white arrow at the right, then drag the white arrow left until the line widths look good
could also use a 'Levels' adjustment layer with a clipping mask for the last step. lines end up aliased and jaggy, but there's a plugin here that'll fix it https://olm.co.jp/rd/technology/tools/?lang=en

Start it behind the zygomatic bone. So learn how to identify that bony landmark first. The circle roughly corresponds to the the chewing muscles called the temporalis which fit into a flat area on the sides of the skull. Obviously it isn't a perfect circle in nature and each head is different, but the zygomatic bone is a structure you can reliably find.

I haven't seen the /sqg/ in a while (or maybe I missed it), but I'm going to ask my stupid question here since its related to my goals.

Right now I'm cutting off digital to get good in drawing on paper. My biggest gripe is that when I'm copying reference off of pics, my traditional sketches get "distorted" when I scan my pictures. The scan is fine- its when I'm drawing on paper is when it happens.
Also to clarify, its not my mistakes on the line angles I try to copy, its the horizontal/vertical frames and grid.

How do I train my eye to see perfectly vertical lines and to create them?
>hurr durr just put a ruler up your face
but even then the angle will be a few degrees off, resulting in a subtle diagonal. The edges of the paper looked fucked to me as well.

Most resources recommended around here are good but /beg/s like to cope by calling things memes. Despite that being the culture around here, it’s probably in your best interest to not follow suit

It depends on your experience prior to Loomis. I noticed a big difference drawing various angles from imagination after ~20 heads, but I've probably put thousands of hours into drawing, just never learned good construction.

You have some problems with perspective. Try to draw from photos for now, and without any stylization, you should see the difference quick this way. Have you watched all videos from Proko on Loomis heads? Don't continue mindlessly grinding. After watching you can practice just the spheres, and "cut" them in half with the center line, make sure it follows the shape of the sphere. Your center line doesn't follow the sphere so well, and it extends down in a curved way. Make sure to focus on this,to become comfortable with the primitives.

Im >>4161424
I just remembered i wanted to ask this along with my sketch.
Is it possible to build a fan base when you sort of lack style consistency?
I love drawing but I have this serious problem where i lack a specifc workflow and a specific style due to my need to experiment and constantly try new stuff. Usually it depends on how i feel and my mood. Sometimes i go straight to colouring and im building it along the way on a single layer feeling no type of fear that i might end fucking up the whole drawing. Other times i sort of start with cell shading and render it afterwards.
And same goes for stylization. I just fear that if i stick to only one way of doing things i'm sort of losing all the other posibilites of resolving things and improving.
And from time to time i sort of get bored and i don't know how to keep myself interested in a specific workflow.
I wish i could choose something and stick with it but i enjoy drawing in so many different ways.
Do i lack discipline? Should i force myself to stylize in only one way if i want to "make it"?
Also sorry for my bad english.

>> No.4161521

>>4161505
okay first calm down
stop trying to "make it" and try to find things that make drawing fun for you

figure out what your goals are and study artists who have styles you want to achieve
actually design something, whether it be a concept or an illustration. making finished work will expose your weaknesses way more and force you to grow 10 more than a bunch of shitty doodles

You develop a feel for it eventually, but generally don't shade with the same hue. It's rare that it looks good. Studies help a lot imo, you notice patterns in color combination and are able to use them in your own art. For anime coloring reference you should look for magazine series "CG Illustration Technique Let's make Character". I wish I could give more advice, but you just kinda feel it afterwards, also look into Sycra, Sinix, Tyler Edlin, Marco Bucci on YouTube

yea that's like the first thing every resource sais. Your right though you just got to feel it out from lots of practice and maybe still lifes.

I'm glad it helped anon. I haven't watched much of Marco Bucci but he was recommended once.

What helped me, but I'm not sure how much it applies to anime: I collected works from artists where I found colors to be incredible, and started analysing them. Many of those are based purely on color theory, eg. split complementary color palettes. If you notice those patterns of color choice, you can start applying them to your art. You've probably heard it often before, but it really helps.

I'm the anon who drew that anime fig construction. To reiterate on what I did there:

I took a random anime fig, traced the outlines, then added 3D planes over it (If you have trouble visualising in 3D, just look for pictures of 3D anime head meshes on google) I then redrew the face, free-handed, while looking at my guidelines.

>>4164417

I did a quick redline of your work, and the first thing I noticed was that you draw the jaw and cheeks way too big. It makes the back of the cranium look small in proportion, and the perspective on your feature placement is off. Once you get the proportions right, focus on following your guidelines.

cool yea theres a bjillion books on anatomy luckily.
I just use the word drapery when looking for reference. just takes a lot of practice though breaking them down to individual concepts help. The common concepts I always see when searching for drapery reference are Pipe fold, Zig Zag fold, Spiral fold, Half lock, Diaper Fold and Drop fold.

Luckily with anime/manga theres a lot of patterns that get recycled
When i get free time i usually put on a movie in the background and just draw examples on this pinterest board.
