I posted this on the last thread. I tried to take a picture with less glare. I really need to fix the lighting in my small studio. This is my entry for a local contest. We can only use 3 colors. Black white and green. I appreciate any suggestions and advice. The idea is to have some nice green reflections in a little stream surrounded by rocks and mountains. Mostly very dark sillohuette but some bright green highlights.

Clean lineart is only attractive if you have a good sense of shape design and confident lines in the first place.

Otherwise, there's no shame in drawing loose lines while you're still trying to understand the rhythm of the forms you're drawing.

An accurate sketchy drawing is much nicer to look at than a clean, incorrect drawing thats' only focus was clean lines above all else.

For the record, I named myself as a means to own up to my shitty attitude/unconscious artistic incompetence (for lack of a better term) when I initially posted the art of my character Zach and got blasted for it. Yeah it's kinda dumb to do that on 4chan but for whatever reason I figured "fuck it." Plus I wanted to have some kind of presence here of sorts but yeah in retrospect having the namefield filed out's kinda dumb.

Also holy FUCK this is bad. I'm without a doubt /beg/ but I'm willing to admit it when I see it. My proportions are WAY the fuck off and I have no idea how I didn't see this before. Worst part is, I actually have gone through the sticky several times and even downloaded all the books from fellowBro's Mediafire link and have been reading up on them. On top of that, I understand the idea of starting out with basic shapes and such as I always start off with said shapes. I definitely see the errors I'm making here and know what I'm doing wrong and what I should be doing, but at the same time I can't help but feel like I'm noticing this way too late in the drawing process. And then there was the head, which I have no idea why this one in particular tripped me up so much seeing that I can be somewhat ok with heads. To be fair though certain parts of the ref were kinda hard for me to see cus of the shading around them.

Maybe I'm jumping ahead too much in some places and getting ahead of myself? Maybe I'm not focusing enough? I don't know, but I'm certainly willing to try. Besides, at least I'm able to acknowledge when I'm being an absolute retard lol

That and I primarily want to do animation/cartoony and/or stylized stuff as an artist but I figured doing studies would help as it does with everyone else. Your proportions are really off. You're symbol drawing. You were given proper redlines in the last thread and it seems like you ignored them.

For the record, I did try to follow the redline, but the left side of the ref's face and body (our right), which is what half of the redline covered, was really hard for me to see in the pic itself, through no fault of the anon who redlined it of course. And yeah at this point, I too think it's shit and will hold off on working on it for a while and go back to fundies.

That being said, out of curiosity where am I symbol drawing? I'm assuming you're reffering to the face which I could kind of see, especially the nose and mouth, the former was tripping me the fuck up for whatever reason, and the latter being also really hard for me to see in the ref. Most important thing I can tell you is to clean up your lines. One crisp line for each contour. If you can't make it look good cleaned up, you've got more to work on.

For things I can point out right now, I'd say that the feet aren't planted convincingly on the ground in perspective. The forms are sloppy and warped. (like you seem to have no control over your forms) And your forms don't wedge and connect convincingly. They're like playdough, haphazardly slapped together and each joint seems to have been built in a different way.

Keep practicing. I think your time is better spent focused on Figure Drawing. It's hard to diagnose your own mistakes when drawing bubbly dogs like this.

I finally completed a finished piece. I drew a random anime girl for someone on Discord. This took me multiple hours of doing the line art and coloring/shading it. The full image is a much higher resolution, but I resized it to post it here.

The left is the finished piece, the right is obviously before I did the line art and colored it. I know it's "anime", and I don't really plan to just draw anime girls from now on, but it is what it is. I take critique seriously and even screencap some of it to help me improve. There's not really anything specific critique wise I'm looking for, but I'd love to hear what you guys think.

While yes, going over your lines multiple times or chicken scratching is definitely bad if it's a habit, it's totally fine to do it when sketching and most if not all professional artists go over their lines many times to find the right one, nothing bad about it and no one will ever see it because it won't be in the end product.

>>4132212
Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of the shading was guess work for me. Originally, the shadows were a lot less dark until a friend of mine told me to not "puss out" and just make them dark. It looks a lot better than what I had before, but especially around the shoulder area for me, it looks very flat.
The only other thing I regret a bit about the drawing is that I got really lazy with the colors and just started picking them from the reference.

Reality check: It takes a LONG time to become even decent at figure drawing. Years, especially from beg level. Its one of the most difficult and complex subjects you can tackle in art.

You're getting the right info though so ask yourself if you studying efficiently?

>how much practicing are you doing vs learning theory
>are you making your own notes on the source material
>are you drawing along with the videos or just watching them
>are you trying to recall what you learned from memory
>are you applying what you learned immediately into your own original drawings

etc. etc. The most important thing to remember is just to focus on one subject for an extended period of time and study it over and over, and you'll learn it little by little as long as you're consistent.

symbol drawing is drawing what you know, not what you see.
we know a human has an eye and a mouth, so a beginner will draw two circles for eyes and a line for a mouth. when in reality, an eye is extremely complicated and is nowhere near a circle.
basically, your mind is drawing what you think is there, rather then what's ACTUALLY there
it's why drawing anime is discouraged for beginners because it teaches you to rely on stylization over accurate representation of your drawing

It is not that bad Anon just need more polish.
You have chosen an amazingly complex and hard topic and I can see you have spent a spent a very long time on the small details. I commend you for your patience and persistence on working out so many details.

Here I tried to help by shifting the light around a bit and blurring the moon/planet at the background. I added more thicker fog and random water wave to enhance the water and provide more contrast as I think it can help to frame the foreground.

On the character I added ambient occlusion with just soft brushes, I think your picture in general could benefit greatly from softer edges, I get that you are going for cell shading but such greatly detailed works would make using cell shading a nightmare if you want to draw more than one level of shading. Do not be afraid of mixing soft and hard edges that is how it will appear more realistic.

I also added a rim light from behind on the character to give her more of a shape and added a lot of stronger light spots on the hair and the monster parts, doing that makes the subject look wet and considering the setting of the piece I think being wet is is how it should be.

Did this help?

Nah, the basis was already really good to work with you have worked a lot at it and it shows. I really just lazily slapped some airbrushy rendering on it using Add glow and Multiply layers to change the lighting a bit, then added some highlights and the water reflections. If the basis wouldn't be good with the cell shaded hard edges look then it wouldn't be look half as good as it is.

Well, this is a 2-page test of the style and to see if I'm actually able to pull off something at all. After that I'll go for something a bit longer. Taking baby steps.

But I can promise I won't stop trying. And neither should you. I like your Cthulhu tentacle girlfriend. We can all make it on this blessed day.

It's pretty nice as far as style and line quality are concerned.
Head needs to be pushed further to the right, rn it looks like it barely attaches to the neck.
Boobs are sad and deflated, definitely need proper volume.
Your lines are nice but you seem to focus on them at the expense of your forms/ structure, particularly in the upper leg and hip/torso area.
Nice lines are good but they won't carry your drawing if parts of your figure look like a squeezed tube of toothpaste.

the lines look a little wobbly and don’t appear confident, friend. most softwares have a stabilizer tool to help fix this. your character also seems to be missing eyebrows/ears in addition to the nose, as you’ve previously mentioned. don’t avoid drawing difficult features, you’ll never learn that way.

Just started yesterday when I suddenly decided I wanted to learn to draw and I'm glad there are so many resources available. I started with drawing that Igor sketch upside down like in the doc, but I can't even do that. I even tried the four box trick, and even then I was so fucking bad at proportions and drawing straight lines I fucked that up too. How the fuck am I supposed to draw cute anime girls when I can't beat figure drawing?

Well, for one, you didn't resize the image AT ALL and two, I can't really make out what this is? I think you didn't rotate it properly either.
It will take a while even for you to get to the point of making decent looking lines, but it really is the key. I highly recommend Drawabox
https://drawabox.com/lesson/0
but more specifically, this lesson of it:
https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/2
Now, obviously, don't just spend all of your time grinding out lines and boxes. The thing I recommend isn't to draw only to improve aimlessly. Pick a goal, which for you is to draw anime girls, and then focus on that. Drawing what you enjoy will drive you to improve a lot more than just drawing stupid shit like boxes you don't care about.

Pic related, it's a bit outdated, but after I discovered drawabox my line quality and drawing mindset instantly improved. I don't want to appear like I'm "subtle bragging" or anything, but I started 313 days ago and went from the left set of images to making this >>4132184 and while I honestly REALLY don't want to be relegated to drawing anime girls it's proof that it doesn't take much to improve. I only draw about an hour a day too, so I could(and should) be drawing a LOT more and I'd improve even faster.

Basically, you can do it. I hope you aren't discouraged so quickly. If you start RIGHT NOW and practice every single day, 10 years from now, you'll have 10 years of experience. If you give up, 10 years from now you're regret giving up and never know what was.

Why didn't you draw the entire ring around her wrist? You stopped part way through for no reason. It's a 3D model, so, the entire ring around her is rendered and if you had access to the 3D model, you could see it from any angle, so, it seems kind of dumb that you just stopped. In fact, just draw the entire ring as an ellipse around her wrist.
Part of the idea of constructing is that you aren't just drawing what you see, you are imagining and drawing the entire thing, yet, in your drawing, you are leaving out parts that you can't see.

>>4133746
Sure. It's pretty typical I think. I usually just start with drawing curves or shapes to get a sense of a pose. Then I draw curvy boxes for the chest, pelvis, and head, while aligning things in perspective (lines sorta going towards a vp). Then curves for the limbs, which I then make boxy. I draw form lines over them too sometimes. From there, it's anatomy detail, clothing if there is any, and then shading.

work hard and feel the pain, it's worth it. I've had those same exact feelings for years. Know what you want in life, if there's nothing better you could do with your time then go all out in it, do everything you need to & in a couple of months you'll be so glad you did, this is your rocky movie. If I could suggest something important just start by making a drawing a habbit, no pressure, doodle everyday after work while watching a movie/tv, like 1 drawing a day, then after a few months or a year get into fundies you'll be less willing to quit.

I think you should better remake that blur into the water, as if there is a lake there. It doesn't really looks like sky and I doubt you could make it looks like sky at this point.

Another possible option (I'm not really sure about it) is to reverse the perspective here. Like, imagine that the creek isn't running to the lower part of the picture, but to the upper, as if you watch it from the top. Although I don't know how the planet will fit there.

And another one: just make some forest or more mountains out of this blur. I think it's the best option, at least the easiest.

Not that Anon but, the "Drawing on the Right side of the brain" book is mostly pseudoscience bullshit that was based on stuff people though to be true in the 1960s and '70s. The two sides of the brain work together constantly and drawing is a complex process that both sides are engaged in. Practically speaking there are a few exercises in the book that are legit good practice, like teaching you to observe what you are drawing and knowing and using negative space, but they are nothing special or different. On the other hand it does not teach you the fundamentals that you will need to actually be able to draw things without copying references.

Weird things takes experience, usually it means you are mixing two things that are different but not too different so that the together produces something unsettling. Yet the rest of it looks/acts like everything is normal. For instance look at the Coraline movie where people's eyes are replaces by cloth button, it is different and quite unsettling because they still behave like it is normal.

I would also advise you to look up and look through he "Codex Seraphinianus", it is a famous long and quite detailed surreal art book that supposedly is a study of a surreal world.

I was about to say something similar to what >>4134703 said. But yeah, something that seems otherworldy but is, in one way or another, treated like it's normal. One thing that comes to mind is Dr. Seuss, especially in his somewhat lesser-known books like "Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?" and "Halloween Is Grinch Night," even though the latter is an original tv special. Especially a particular scene near the very end that's just bat fuck insane, even for Seuss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeFaBvL72a8

>> No.4134727

>>4134723
One other thing to take note actually, this scene really works in terms of being surreal considering the fact that the main character Euchariah is thrown into this bizarre world that is completely unattached from his own. He's something of an outsider to the world inside the wagon, and all the while the inhabitants of this bizarre world think nothing of what goes on around them, as *they* believe that's what reality is. It's basically Spirited Away but much less fantastical and several decades off.

Hope my YouTube video essay analogy helps you think about how to approach surrealism.

But real talk it's pretty dece, I like the otherworldly vibe. Parts of it seem a bit too muddy/lacking in detail but idk if that's just your style.
