Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

You fucked up the caustics on the water big time. There's no sense of scale for its size, the fish around it aren't defined well enough, so maybe it's shark sized? Maybe whale sized? Who the fuck knows.

You decided to only do scales for the head and upper body, making the rest of the tail nothing more that a waste of space. On the tail, it gets really, really lazy near the end. Honestly you should have just cut it off or changed it, but then you would be fucked since there's nothing more boring than a figure of something in profile. It's the only thing stopping the image from being completely flat. It's still flat as all hell, though

And then you bury the whole thing under a bunch of layers trying to hide the shitty colors and lack of definition in this piece. It's shocking how lazy this is, while still trying to come off as complete.

Cut the sympathy bullshit too. Boo hoo, you can't paint. Well creating this abortion isn't any better than just drawing and scrapping another dozen failures

Go back to /beg/. You're not quite here yet

I don't know what the fuck the other anon is on about, probably a crab. This is awesome dude. Got a blog?
The only thing I would add personally is a bit more small fish that are based on irl species, to give a sense of scale, for example adding a shark near the surface of the water. This way it's easy to tell it's giant, right now the small fish could be different sizes for all I know, for example those fish under his body remind me of cleaner fish that hang out on bigger fish's bodies, so i'm basing my sense of scale off those, but I can't be sure if that's what you intended.

Thanks anons. Yea, my goal was to has the remora as a tool to measure size, but even after I included them, it still felt too empty and dead, so I added some pilot fish too. I wanted it to be big, but not too big. But, looking back on it, it looks massive since I added to much atmosphere between it and the tail (since I was rushing and the tail was massively underdeveloped) this, conflicting with the water caustics, conflicting with the fish size, really fuck with the scale of the image hard. It's difficult to tell how close to the surface it is, how big it is.

And, taking a look at it from an zoological standpoint, it all crumbles. the tail is too long and gets to thin to support its caudal fin. The fins are reminiscent of a flying fish but that conflicts with the eel like body, it would never be able to make it out of the water

If I wasn't so dead-set on pumping it out in one sitting, then he probably would have turned out better, but as is, he's kinda half baked. thank you for your input

Ok can someone help me with values and where my fuck ups happen? I notice personally that I very often have issues with the background and can never get the values right. I want the backgrouds usuall to be low detail with low contrast so they wouldn't steal attention but they either become a blurry mess, too detailed and strong, or just too desaturated in a way that it doesn't even look like it belongs to the picture. I think this illustrates my frustration well (don't get caught up in the anatomy shitty perspective, I just made something to illustrate my point.)

What should I study to fix this? Any resources and advice is welcome ofc.

>> No.4143280

>>4143275
Not to sidestep your question but I think you should worry about being able to draw the background and the figure before starting to worry about the values.

I've found that being able to draw things more confidently has lead to me being able to control the values and intent in an image better.

>> No.4143291

>>4143280
Yea I'm currently practicing both. The reason I consider my values to be the biggest issue is that I get frustrated when I can't finish any of my works. I personally like to study one subject through out, so if I practice people, I don't want to just draw people, I want to learn to color them as well, to me they kinda go hand in hand.

If you wanted to make the colours a bit more realistic you could use some more colour theory. If you look at the cubes at the bottom of the image the two planes of the cubes with arrows pointed to them are the same tone because they are both the same value of pure grey. The tone appears blue or red depending on all the other tones of the image. where the tones are around the same hue, more desaturated tones or grey tones in the image should appear as the colour on the other side of the colour wheel (complimentary colours) e.g green vs red, and in yours blue vs orange.

ok the readability isn't that bad but you should design the contrast in your image to help tell the story of your piece such as the relationships and actions of the characters. use contrast more sparingly and maybe the image would look better realised if you go over with a soft brush to smooth value transitions.

Go back to the beginning, and actually study value. I can tell you didn't - you don't have a grasp of how to use value to create the illusion of depth, and volume. This piece is above your skill level - get over the embarrassment, go back, learn how to build and control value, starting with simple block shapes, and then how to build depth of field and volume with value and shading.
The best way to look at value is to convert color images to black and white, and look how the values work, especially when talking about depth of field. A common technique for artists pre-computer was to photocopy their art, to see the greyscale of their images, to see where their values are. Or, to paint samples of their colors and gradations, and photocopying them, to see what their actual value is, in greyscale.
Value is something you study, until it becomes instinctual to you. Anyone that's struggling with it, almost always skipped that in the beginning, thinking they already knew it, but don't understand that shading isn't all that there is to value.
You could try breaking this down and doing this as cylinders or boxes, with the same lighting, and try to figure out the values in the scene, but I think you need to go back further than that, you're lacking the real fundamentals of value, if you're struggling this hard in B&W.

Definitely /int/

Think about it. If you go back to /beg/ you're just going to be getting the same insightful comments aimed toward a beginner over and over. "Yeah right on! Just keep up with those studies!" Or worse, completely ignored. Not saying that doesn't happen on /int/.

If you post work on /int/ you'll get a needed reality check about your skill level. And you will then know what you need to work on. If you don't understand what they said, then back to /beg/ with you.

Then there's that adage. "You are the company you keep." OR "You're The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With." Even if you aren't /int/ yet. You just keep posting and trying your best, around other /int/ and getting comments, and you'll truly reach /int/ in due time.

Your mileage may vary.

like what he was saying values don't matter at all if you can't get the structure right, and also the values will fall into place easier if you have a good drawing. That's certainly part of it. The nose and mouth are also too small also. The back of the jaw is too high. You should try color-picking the highlights on her face. I think your choice of background color is probably influencing your perception of the colors on the figure too.

You'd probably get more out of trying to paint something other than a face to start with. Try painting the folds on her clothes or something

Your feet and hands here (and the feet in the last one) look too short and stubby. However, in your other studies where you do complete figures the feet and hands (mostly) look okay. I would be careful of working on parts like this in isolation as it's hard to gauge relative proportions. Look at photos of feet and calves or hands and forearms, get a feel for their relative measurements, and draw them together paying attention to those proportions. You don't want to spend hours drawing a bunch of stubby feet then put those stubby feet on a full figure and not realize the problems.
Unless stubby feet and hands is what you're going for, of course.

When I said color picking, I didn't mean to actually paint with. Guess the color and then later *check* with the picker. If you are surprised by the result, you'll learn what you were doing wrong quicker.

Do this with your drawing too. Don't trace the picture, but do overlay it afterward to see what you messed up. Both of these are easy ways to get feedback when working digitally, without needing help from other people.

This took me about 45 mins to do. I'm not trying to get better at capturing and building up images from construction so I can do it without relying on reference.
