This would look better if we saw the other eye IMO. It just looks like you didn't know how to draw it and you're hiding it because of that. Drop/core shadows are really inconsistent so pay more attention to them.

You would benefit from doing values before color and making those lines and shapes sharper instead of leaving it to a soft round line.

>>4123429
the face is really puffy looking... rather bland style. I'd look into trying to simplify your rendering. I think you're putting too much into it.

>>4123446
Forget about rendering and coloring. Learn more anatomy and how to construct a form. Legs should be around the same length as the crotch to the middle of the neck. The crotch area and upper torso looks bizarre. And dont bother drawing if you're going to replace nipples and vaginas with bandages. You arent terrible but you arent good and are making more mistakes than not.

>>4123538
stop using that fuzzy brush or push brush. You can easily transition values more easily by manual blending via sampling and opacity. This just looks amateur and messy. It's not bad but you are holding yourself back through cheap methods.

>>4123602
do some more value studies and try to refine shapes and textures more. I see a stream or brook but it's hard to discern more than a fielded hill. Good color selection though

>>4123641
not much to say here. I like your style. Decent contrast and composition. Some parts are a little messy however. I dont know what your process is, but it might benefit to put down the values first and once you have an image that looks palatable, then pen in details. I think your work would be astounding if you found a better sense of dimension and would bring it up a level.

>>4123697
the dimension outside of the characters upper bodies is a little off. The breasts also look a bit uneven on the pale girl. The values of the doctors skin could be fixed. A little muddy but I enjoy the scene

>>4123817
not awful, not much to say. I'd do more studies and not just post 3 faces with some odd strokes.

>> No.4123984

>>4123840
sense of dimension is great, a little skewed at the top, good values and colors. Makes the mundane subject more interesting. I dont understand the wobbly lines in the sidewalk, looks like theres water distorting light.

>>4123841
what's up with her mouth? alright values, bad colors. the brush makes the subject kind of disgusting. Too shiny, reminds me of giftwrap

>>4123946
mistook this for a photograph, good work. Try to clean it up and use a harder brush. It's a little fuzzy. Would be much more interesting if you didnt use a textured brush for the sheets, they look stained, and coupled with the fuzzy lines it makes the piece hard to appreciate.

I tried to do a quick paint-over to help you fix face features and your lighting. You should see under the chin with this angle, also nose should be much bigger. Don't work on black background, it really sucks for the rest of your values. Your colors are overall way too equally saturated, bad habit. You should apply more color shifting theory and avoid same tones everywhere. Hope this helps, keep it up !

>> No.4128163

>>4128154

This is an excellent overpainting. I'm not the OP btw.

I don't think you should ever work on a black/white background either. Even if the end result needs to be BW you should have a placeholder BG and cut the character out in the end. You need to get that ambient light from the surroundings early on or the whole piece will look extremely unnatural. Obviously it's kind of messy because you did it quickly but the thumbnail is so much more vivid and I think you should have something more painterly like this in the beginning and start tightening up the details when you've got the lighting/colors set. It's the first impression that counts with stuff after all.

Thanks for keeping /ic/ decent.

Equally desaturating the illustration is just ad bad. You still dont know how fix your valurs mr ruan wana be. You just abuse the same brush that just looks awful when you use it. The illustration was fine before you didt have to flex ur shitty painting skills to demonstrate saturation or "color shifting" lol. All you did for the lighting was exaggerate the rim light which he removed. There is also nothing wring with illustrations on a black backgrounf. Not everything has to have a shit smeared background.

Should I switch to basic proportion training instead? That particular drawing was one I pushed out in a few hours. It may be cope, but I feel if I were to spend more time and not be as rushed doing it again I wouldn’t bugger it up so much. Maybe I’ll try it again this week.

>>4128123
Thanks, I tried to run it first with pencil and tried really hard to get the angles of the outsides of the buildings right, but I definitely buggered up when it came to the internal lines. The whole right side of the picture starts at a different point than the left but I’m glad you like my shading. It’s the one thing I’ve thought I could do decently with consistency.

That's just old school teaching my friend. Any ego you have about your drawing skills gets torn to shreds. Bargues are supposed to be grueling work and push you to your absolute limit, I'm just telling you to raise your standards. "sort of right" doesn't cut it with bargues, the accuracy you are looking for is in the fractions of millimeters. Good luck.

I’m not confident with my skills, I didn’t intend to state I was happy with that drawing, just that I thought it was okay. I thought there were many mistakes besides the narrowing of it before.
>Bargues are supposed to be grueling work and push you to your absolute limit, I'm just telling you to raise your standards.
My standards for my own work are higher than for others, I cannot preform to my standards so I take a little pride in things I consider okay. I know the three works I posted aren’t great but that’s why I’m here. You seem to understand that I am not only happy but defending my mistakes. Overall though I’m probably not ready for Bargue plates, I’m can’t draw a single thing from imagination and haven’t studied proportions or light. I should probably drop to easier lessons, yeah?

Depends on the type of metal but Brad Rigney had some pretty fine tips for super tight weathered metal rendering, though it's not painterly at all:

https://embedy.cc/movies/VUFtc1dKRDRiSHBUY3FZdGppM2xhb29ielZTUm5idnpvb21LTGcrTjdBZz0=

They used to sell that tutorial but you can't buy it from anywhere anymore so I don't feel too bad for sharing it here.

Another good one is this series by Clint Cearley:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wB5YA8tOVw

It's in 3 parts and you can find part 2 in the video description.

Hope these get you started. Just remember that it's a surface that's reflecting the environment around the subject depending on how reflective the material is so you absolutely need to know where the guy is standing to make the metal look believable.

Here are 3 more tutorials:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JZeeTKCTs4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIaQAK4UPSM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJuyJJDXv1Y

Don't just copy any of these. Do some studies before you re-do it and come back with some knowledge instead of just trying out different things.

I think you are more than ready. Just need to take your sweet time measuring proportions and relationships before you start adding value. On the positive side you are grouping values into distinct zones without the common temptation of going crazy with the bllending which leads me to believe you won't have too much trouble with the rendering aspect once you get the structure right.

Depending on how polished/reflective the surface is, you're painting either/and/or the local highlights/midtones/shadow as well as the scene around it deformed by the object's shape. Don't paint the object, paint what's nearby.

Not goin too much for style yet just working on slow transition (I only practice every few months) from charcoal to paint. Hardest part is the handling & adjusting colors & values once they're already in. Always turns to a smudgy mess like on the tree. Bout halfway through on this one.

I looked at it earlier and thought the tree was the best part. reminded me of this painting I did.

just as a general rule of painting, the more individual colors you are observing and mixing the faster you will learn. Even if it makes your painting into a brown/rainbow mess it's not so much about that as it is getting the most out of each painting session.

Your drawing skill is your drawing skill, and is altogether separate from the skills involved in painting, because the main point of painting is color, and the more colors you are looking at and mixing on your palette, regardless of how it looks, the better a job you are doing.

That's the entirety of Impressionist painting theory, observe as much color as possible and apply it as tightly packed onto the canvas as you can. Whether you want to mix it or add washes after the fact is up to you, but when you are starting out with painting you Just. Need. Mileage. on mixing colors.
