IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless

I struggle really hard with pinning down value and I get the feeling I've skipped on some fundies or exercises, but I really don't know which. If someone could recommend me some shading exercises, that'd be nice.

Another thing I've had difficulty was making form converse all around while shaping this, especially when it came to drawing the hair. I realized I have no clue how hair works.

Do you enjoy the process of picking up a pencil and drawing?
If yes, muscle through and try to get better. Lots of people hate their finished work because they can see many of the errors in it. Constantly comparing yourself to others is another problem. Stop doing that if you do already. Only do that when you're specifically trying to improve as doing it passively will make you bitter towards you self and others who draw.
If no, find another hobby. Simple as. Drawing isn't for everyone. Its trial and error. Drawing is 50-60% muscle memory. It takes time and dedication to build that up and if you aren't willing to take it seriously, theres no point in wasting your time trying to do it. I don't have the best feelings towards a lot of what I make after its finished but I don't hate it with a burning passion like a used to. Its because I got better. You will like your work the better it becomes because what you actually drew will look more like what you intended to draw. If you hate the actual process of drawing, you'll never make it to finishing a piece in the first place. Its like saying you want to be an expert marksman but then complaining about how you hate keeping maintenance of the gun or doing target practice.
Basically, just keep drawing. Compare old drawings to new drawings. The improvement might make you feel better. Or quit and do something else with your time. I felt like wanted to quit after my ability to see caught up to my actual skill about a year in to drawing but when I considered my other options for hobbies, I decided that drawing was the only thing I really could or was willing to do. Drawing should be recreational for you, not painful.

It's weird, you have this strange mix of understanding anatomy and not understanding it. I don't mean to be overtly harsh, but some of the frogs in your previous doodles have decent bodies but their legs feel flat or just angled weirdly. As for the rabbit drawing, I'm really thrown off by how 2/3 of it is done well and yet the mouth feels really flat, cus it's showing the entire thing when in reality we should only see it in more of a quarter view. That, and the nose bridge (assuming it's still called that with animals lol) could use some curving; it looks too blocky, but then again it *might* look better with a proper mouth but it's hard to visualize. Overall, You're definitely getting there, just keep up practicing animal anatomy, proportions and angles and such.

Haven't drawn the last few days because I've been wrestling with my computer shitting itself.

Some gesture and construction to get back in to the hang of things. Still trying to work on line quality. I also know the proportions on some of these are fucked. Long thigh short shin kind of shit.

Does anyone know any exercises to hammer this stuff in? Just repeating boring pose mannequins over and over with regular proportions kind of stuff?

Anyway now that the pc's fixed I'm going to focus on learning how arms, hands and shoulders work and how they all attach. Also how boobs work. I think I have a vague idea but that's about it.

These are some good tutorials on hair

In the art book thread, you can find How to Render by Scott Robertson. He goes over value quite nicely. Color and Light by James Gurney is another great one.

>>4115631
It's pretty important for you at this stage to have a reference pulled up on the side and to measure proportions. Out of all of the things that need work in your drawing though, I think faces should be your focus right now.

>>4115648
Same as above. Try overlaying your reference to see where you messed up on though.

>>4115781
For the most part, it's fine. Clean it up and check out Doxy's tutorials on penises. It's the selling point of your picture.

>>4115886
Use your pencil to measure and look at your picture from a far distance as well as the mannequin. Things from further away are easier to discern differences and errors between.

>>4116437
You aren't going dark enough. Add a specific ambient occlusion layer using pure black (since this is a greyscale study) and put it to about 85%. Another thing you can try is to work on a pure grey background to start with so the whites don't contrast as much.

>>4116586
You need to do more comparative measurements between your subject and the drawing. Also try and study and simplify the shapes more before going straight up detailing. Each feature is symbol drawn.
Also! If you're uploading from your phone, after taking the picture go to your gallery and take a screenshot of the picture. That will stop it from flipping.

People here are so desperate for SOME amount of structure to supplement their utter lack of talent and imagination that they begin judging all art by how well it follows their preferred list of arbitrary rules, rather than just looking at the fucking art that's right in front of their eyes.

trying to fix some of my old art(2017) fixed her calf a bit but it's still a mess, mostly been grinding proportions, so anatomy's still tricky to me, like how arms connect to the torso and how thighs connect to the lower body, and how calves connect to the thighs, so yeah, stopping chicken scratching and gesture/expression remains a lower priority

I'll take any and all advice anons. I have tried every book/method for a month and I feel like I am too dumb to understand how to use an artbook.I used digital to save paper but I usually do trad. Do I copy the artist's example until I can replicate it to proper fidelity and then apply it to my own stuff? Do I just grind and copy until I can carbon copy the author's stuff? I feel like I can't even make a line properly, I start making the line for the cheek and it comes out like shit. I try to make an oval for the head and it comes out like shit. I am confused and have no idea of how to approach it.

Tried to do pic related with this Japanese loomis (I feel like he mixed construction and grids, but wouldn't lines just overlap at that point?Does he use a lighter pencil beforehand uses his 6B for hard construction? No idea).

Work today in pic related.

you completely ignored the proportions those figures show, like all you did was copy the top-right figure putting all the effort in just getting the same picture, and failing anyway. Can you read japanese? I can't, and I can confidently tell that the whole point of the exercise is to learn the general propotions of the features of the face. What you need to do is copy the steps, commit the proportions to memory, and then repeat from imagination. Repeat a handful of times to make sure you got it right and then move on. No need to waste effort into getting exact reproductions of the figures because that's not the goal.

Don't jump between books. Too many different methods and contradictory advise will crearly hurt you if you are an absolute /beg/. Stick to a handful at most depending of what you want to accomplish. If you need something more guided, watch video courses.

if you have such bad dexterity as you say I can assume that you just started doing digital and/or you are just a beginner. In both cases it will be easier just to stick with pencil and printer paper to do your studies. Grinding will be at least 2x easier

First attempt at an anime style, unfinished.
Still haven't really mastered construction in 3d space but I think I can at least make something with some rudimentary sense of geometry.
Drawabox and loomis aren't working for me, but hampton has been valuable so far.
am I GMI?

Revisited this drawing last night, paid closer attention to the shapes/forms of the guy's body and yeah, this is leagues better than the first one. Lower torso needs work tho

all from imagination
>>4119856
i like how this is going line-wise, but you drew out the linear indication of the delt way too far. also, work on using less lines for your hands and the other areas you're uncomfortable with.

very well done anon, how did you figure out how to keep the fingers proportionate?

Is this a bad tutorial?
It's no Hampton, but it looks to be using a mix of the methods of Preston Blair and some slight construction that's taught everywhere.

hamptom draws disgusting frog people with beanbags for torsos. it's fucking vile. it's the worst thing I've ever seen. I cannot stand to look at the page i want to vomit

thanks anon, I've spent a lot of time looking at my hands and others' hands so I felt it out, but when I'm doing technical work I make the fingers a 5th-3rd longer than the palm and separate it into parts getting ~1/3 shorter

>>4120369
it's alright anon, but don't use tutorials as a way to skip out on drawing from life. these tutorials teach you other people's simplifications for parts of the body, but you'll understand best the ones you find on your own.

Good luck in your journey anon. If you ever want something more in depth, try Anatomy for Sculptors or Goldfinger.
