Ink is a wonderful thing to work with if you're used to only digital and you can take back what you learned and apply it to digital. Being a well rounded artist is great because you never really forget how trad or digital works once you get past a certain low threshold. More experiences make you a better artist.

Hideously disingenuous. They know they can't find fault with the actual argument, so they accuse their opponent of ableism. Why would a disabled person even be able to draw digitally but not traditionally anyway? Is it some kind of ctrl+z thing, and digital is just easier for them?
I did Inktober last year when I was drawing almost exclusively in pencil and ink. This year I'm focusing on my digital skills, so I won't be doing it. It's called INKtober for fuck's sake, who wants to see your digital crap, that's for the other 11 months out of the year. For being so open minded and inclusive, these people are shockingly resistant to broadening their experiences. Cant you just buy yourself a few dip pens and if you really tight on budget some self made holders.

And if you really tight on budget buy yourself a bottle of hero ink and some Arabic gum, mix it with ink Ink:Arabic gum 4:1 and you can use it instead of a much expensive ink for dip pens without ink feathering on even cheap, printer paper.

Cost more initially than just a small $1 bottle of regular ink or even tus but its like 280ml of a dip pen ink for the cost of 4 hero ink 70ml bottles and one 75ml winstor and newton Arabic gum in the long run.

I'm planning to! I'll even sign up on DAD again.
Though I'll probably make sketches for it before it will start: for me Inktober isn't about becoming a better artist, it's about getting more followers for my furry porn blog.

And official prompts aren't that bad honestly - most of those easily could be pornified, especially things like "husky", "dragon", "ride", "overgrown"...
Though I'm not sure how to make porn out of "pattern", "sling" and "tread" yet.

>Who the fuck even commissions ink illustrations?
Digital ink is allowed. In some styles lineart is really important. And last time I checked, there was nothing in the rules against colouring those ink illustrations later. Maybe I am bending the rules a bit, but I don't think it matters that much.

>>4097515
You can do a lot with shitty tools. You can use a cheap ballpoint pen and carefully draw with it in a way that would look like using brush and ink. But with a brush you can do your job quicker: completely filling out dragon from >>4097345 would take you a few minutes with a brush, but an hour with a ballpoint pen (if you didn't want to leave any white spots).
The same could be said about paints (cheap paints have less pigment than expensive ones, so you would need many layers of them to get the same effect), about graphic tablets (it takes more time to draw accurately on a tablet without a build in screen), software (I've seen photorealistic digital paintings made in MS Paint) and so on.

Generally speaking: better tools = you can work faster.

Since good artists are busy people, who actually get paid for it, they would want to be efficient. That's why good artists would try to get the best tools available.
Saying that they wouldn't complain or care about tools is wrong.

>> No.4097547

>>4097496
Yes, but a ballpoint pen is not a subpar tool, and requires no additional learning to produce good art with. In fact, it is easier to use than a dip pen or fountain pen. Professional designers use ballpoint pens all the time, and a lot of artists use them too.

This is true, but I was making drawings with my nephews yesterday and I tried using their kids watercolor kit, it was impossible to use like watercolor. I had to 'learn' the tools to draw something passable.

That said ink and pencil are the most accessible mediums, you could probably draw all your life using only those free promo pens.

Cheap ballpoints like BIC develop excess ink on the tip, but if you have the habit of cleaning up on a piece of paper it's a non-issue.

I think ink might be even cheaper than pencil. You probably get more mileage out of a BIC pen than the equivalent cost in pencil, I bought a single BIC that cost me 30 cents the other day, if you buy a large pack it's even less. It's probably the medium with the highest performance to cost ratio.

Not the exact same thing. "Working for exposure" is just when someone tricks you into doing work for them for free.

Making inktober drawings is just smart social media marketing. it is fun to try to follow the prompts from start to finish and create something that isn't so obvious/surface level for them. there are alternate prompt lists too you can find. some people try to make a connected story for each illustration, like a sort of mini comic run for the month. if you already work mostly with ink, you can use the month to experiment with styles or attempt more difficult methods you've been meaning to practice.

I can relate. Nothing comes close and don't even bother with watercolor brushes. Some painterly textred brushes can be nice but I get the best bet painting opaque tiles like gouache with no pressure jitter then going to blending/soft airbrush at the end.
Bought a tablet but didn't know much about painting. Got a cheap Cotman set, got really into watercolor eventually getting artist paints, dip pen inking, brush pen inking, and gouache. Then knew enough about painting to try digital again. You can get by glazing like with watercolor but you have to get comfortable enough with using the tool and the color wheel without getting out of the flow. I find opaque first then soft brushes over helps solve some modeling problems that don't exist with watercolor. I have much more building up of the painting in digital than watercolor. Watercolor I might be able to do in only 1 or 2 washes, digital is more like 3-4.

I always saw the sketchbook thread as just sketches and sometimes I posted digital as well
I'll go on a tangent here but I see no real difference between "drawthread" and "sketchbook", "drawthread" and "alt", "beg" and "drawthread", "traditional thread" and "sketchbook", there are intermediate artists in /beg/, people posting sketches in traditional, it doesn't make any fucking sense.

I think there should be generals set into categories based on jobs/industries instead
>/conceptart/
>/animation/
>/illustration/
>/fineart/
>/practice & studies/
>/comics & manga/ including webcomics, it's ok to merge since there are few anons doing this
>/porn/ I guess

This would be better in every possible way, having categories geared on what you actually want to do with your art is much more goal oriented than just posting random drawings for anons to give random comments on, /beg/s who stray from /practice & studies/ to post finished work will be spread out across a threads and they might actually get feedback on their progress, you have similar artists doing similar things and giving actual constructive comments that make sense, concept artists can discuss photobashing all they want without other anons bickering about how fair it is, etc.
This board needs structure. Even if this plan is flawed it's still way better than the shit we have right now.

Where is a good place to start with inking pens and grey scale markers? I want to use something other than cheap ballpoint pens this year and I also wanna start playing with markers for values. I was looking at maybe Micron pens but as for markers it seems like everyone shits on every brand that isn't Copic

>> No.4116247

>>4116105
Look up different supplies of art you like. Fineliners aren't magic, I actually dislike working with them although they have a purpose when you want uniform lines. You've got fineliners, dip pens, brushes, and many kinds of brush pens. Dip pens and brushes both use an ink bottle and aren't portable/something you take outside the house to work. Brush pen is my favorite for sketching with, check Pentel brush pens like the Pocket Brush, Color Brush, or the lettering brush. Kuretake and Tombow Fudenosuke are also decent. Depending on the type of cartridge you can look up how you can refill the ink with some type of fountain pen/technical pen ink. For variety of line width, from least to most is fineliner, dip pen, brush pen, brush. For consistency of linework fineliner and dip pen are the best.

For markers, Copic really are the best. You're buying into a system where you can replace the ink many times with the refill for the same price you bought the marker for. Something like cool or warm grey and then 3/5/7/9 or 2/4/6/8. Don't bother with neutral or toners because if you ever go to color you'll want the tinted greys.

based inkposter. this guy knows

I feel the same. Fineliners don't really feel great to draw with, I think they're more useful for specific rendering techniques. Using brush pens like the Pentels was like a revelation after all I've been using were fineliners, gel pens and ballpoints. They're exceptional because they have a really fine tip that allow you to have really nice subtle and organic line variation if you use them with finesse.

categorically it makes sense to go to the thread that you want to see, but for participation, I think it's better to match the persona of the anons posting

/beg/s would be too shy or shoo'd away from the categories

/sketchbook/ is nice for people to just post and walk away.

/alt/ and /porn/ are containment since most anons are doing porn and alt studies anyways and like to be surrounded by other degenerates

/asg/ is retarded I'm waiting for it to die on its own when they give up drawing

I've been trying to get into traditional inking and bought several pen nibs to try them out.
it's fun, but also frustrating, because I don't know which mistakes I am making.
is it the poor paper quality? I cannot afford to buy bristol board right now. or maybe the pen nibs are broken, but both the hunt 102 pen nibs and especially the G-pens are ripping the paper. and how the hell am I supposed to draw circles without completely shredding the paper?
do you guys know any tutorials for beginners on how to ink with pens?

> easier than dip pen or fountain pen
A dip pen can be a a hassle, but if you're too dumb to be able to fill a fountain pen with ink you should just give up now. Once a fountain pen is inked it's virtually no different than any other pen.

>> No.4126358

>>4125799
Read and work through Alphonso Dunn's books, the exercises help a lot. Maybe you are pressing too hard because you have problems with the pen's ink flow, or you are not used to it, or you're using inappropriate paper. I use g-nibs and even on relatively cheap paper I can twist and turn with just indentations on the surface. Tearing occurs when I fuck around too much on places moistened by ink. Go down a check list of possible causes: see if you cleaned your nib right, whether your ink is too viscous, whether you have the same problem on different paper types etc. You do want heavier paper that doesn't soak up your ink, ink type also affects this. I can use pilot ink on my ordinary throwaway paper just fine, but when using india ink it bleeds everywhere. However india ink is waterproof and my other dip pen ink isn't, so when I want to use watercolor I gotta use a paper type that works with the india ink. Experiment and you will figure it out

>> No.4126416

Use associations.
Rings are associated with all sorts of stuff. Maybe you could draw a marriage proposal, or a wedding. Or you could draw pirates rolling in treasure, with their crown jewel being a fancy ring, or a thief trying to steal a ring from a jeweler store. Maybe you could draw a wizard with ring-shaped magic tattoos all over his body, or some sort of sci-fi space ship shaped like a ring. Maybe you could even draw some kids doing a ring-a-round the rosy, or a boxing ring. Use your imagination, anon.

I started practicing with the old Pen & Ink book from Watson-Guptill but I was wondering, how big do inkers usually go on their drawings? I draw on small notepads around a6 size unless I had to do figure drawing or a painting. Is going bigger better?

>> No.4128300

>>4128292
it's not about how small you draw as much as the level of detail you should expect to pull off. A6 is too small for anything but sketches, you're handicapping yourself. You should draw at at least double that size.
Also if you are scanning your drawings and putting them on the web, the final drawing should always be downscaled compared to actual size.
If the drawing looks larger on screen than it looks IRL you are drawing too small.

You gotta think about which direction your stroke will go. While you can use a pen backward carefully for a thin line, you don't want it going sideways. Work on your piece in a direction so you won't be smearing sections with your palm. If smearing still happens, consider a glove so it's not smeared across the page from ink on your skin the entire time. Laser copy paper can be Bristol smooth and cheap. Card stock maybe, but it might feather depending on how watery the ink is. I learned from YouTube, but it wasn't any one guy, I want to say mind of watercolour had a video on it but not sure. Illustrators on there tend to have dip pens but comic artists tend to have brushes.
