**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

CSP is a really good bet because all the books on anime rendering teach it in CSP so it's easier to follow along. Plus if you're interested in drawing anime, then you might get into manga/animation too, both of which CSP can do. The whole program is just geared for anime art, from the downloadable assets to the userbase. Too bad it still doesn't have liquify

any program works equally well for your basic cel shaded anime style & desu that's probably the best place to start since it forces you to think very deliberately bout all your color choices.
krita's brush engine has a lot of potential if you're willing to explore what it's capable of. csp's asset store is nice if you just want good brushes without having to do that. csp also has a lot of quality of life features that are very nice for anime.

*Made a thread for this but I figured I'd post in this thread and the stupid question one as well for more opinions

Hey /ic/, got a question for you guys. I am a beginner artist so this may be a pretty dumb question. Do artists that make stylized art like manga (the more realistic kind) usually base their characters off of real people? Take pic related for example, do you think the artist based this off of someone? Or is it possible to invent a character this detailed without any real life reference? Just something I've wondered about. Thanks.

>> No.4111439

>>4111425
If it leans towards more realistic then they use references for whatever they need - faces, figure drawing, lighting, backgrounds, etc etc. Don't get obsessed with the idea of not using reference just because it seems like less work.

I just wanted to say in case you misunderstood what I meant.

1: You actually absolutely should use real life reference, especially early on! Real life is very very good for reference, especially for anatomy and clothing! Please do not think I meant in any way shape or form that you should not use real life as reference.

2: You don't need to learn soft shading photo realism to learn anime.
3: Art isn't just about raw skill, but also charm - so upping the level of detail isn't the only path towards making better art.
That being said it is still the main way, and the higher quality levels (realism) are usually worthy of study anyways even if your main goal is charm.

What do you mean by "in one go"? You know you can re-read parts, and do exercises multiple times? You can supplement the book with applicable outside references. I don't think there's any book that you can expect to work through linearly, using just the content of the book, and come out the other end as a "good artist".

Most art books don't actually provide a full complement of exercises. They tell you what sorts of exercises you should do, and give you examples, but you're expected to expand them and develop your own and integrate them into your workflow. This is an important part of being an artist, and learning it will prevent you from being one of those faggots who post threads like "How do I get good at drawing <this weirdly specific thing>?"

mmm. Well there is almost no point in doing studies if you don't actually get around to integrating it into your work, that's practically leaving your work half done. I mean I do it too at times, but still.

It sounds like you need to develop a method of drawing from imagination. Start making up and testing proportions you can use so you can build a person from scratch. Often times I recall doing a reference copy, then copying the copy, then attempting closer to doing it on my own as being helpful - it's something I naturally did to try to learn how to do it myself. It isn't going to be perfect at first, but this is your process m8, it takes a lot of ingenuity to develop it.

>Anime girls come off all stiff, odd, wanky, disjointed and not cute or sexy
Art is very difficult, so don't feel bad. There is a lot, a lot, a lot of things to discover in order to make things look right, and that takes much time spent working through things that give you trouble, contemplating, observing, and testing - you've got to be clever. I'm honestly blown away that so many people are able to do this. It really does take a bit of competence, which is fine, even if you don't see yourself as particularly competent at art, you learn to become competent through the struggle. It becomes more fun as you start making better stuff, and you'll naturally come to draw more, certainly so if you develop ways of drawing that require less effort. I can tell you it often takes a great deal of my competence and a degree of preparation to make something high quality, I can't just do anything I want unless I happen to know how to do it, and I use reference to keep the quality up if I don't know how to do something, or as a reminder of how quality things look like. Almost every work i'm looking at someone else's to keep my standards up; In other words, I actually have to try to make things look good for them to come out so. It might sound so obvious saying it, but it is easy to forget.

>Your advice is literally do X
I didn't say for him to draw from imagination, I said for him to try and develop method for drawing from imagination. I'm saying he needs to develop a process and work on it. You can do reference studies all you want, it won't help for shit if you don't have a process. Is this not true?

>Advocate struggle for the sake of struggle.
??? L I T E R A L L Y the opposite of that. I'm telling him to work smart, do you not see the numerous instances where I say you've got to be clever and figure it out? That is not mindless grinding, that is clearly mindful study.

>Drawing is FUN! when you're cool as me, too sad you're bad keep having a terrible time
but that's true, learning how to draw sucks ass at first, and it's much more fun when you get better. Does anyone even disagree with that?

>Wew art is very hard. It's incredible so many people except for you cannot do it!
Art actually is very hard, uniquely so, and I actually am amazed so many people are able to do it so well given that it is a difficult thing. You only need to look at all the numerous baddies out there to know this is true.
>All with mixed half assed feel good shitty platitudes
???????? I fucking hate mindless platitudes, name even one platitude I used. Everything I do and speak comes almost entirely from personal experience, in fact I'm pretty sure everything I said was mostly contrary to what most people say. People don't say to work smart, they say to work harder. Good artists almost never talk about how hard art is and what it takes to make something good. You have actually accused me of the one thing I hate the most, and it is literally the precise opposite of what I have actually done - I am very, very independent in my beliefs. Are you jew or something what the hell? You must be trolling.

Are there any books on how to draw anime-style that are a). in English, b). not 10 years out of date in terms of style, and c). not bad examples?
For context, I bought pic related while I was in Japan. I know next to nothing of drawing other than sometimes I can make a face that looks good, and figured that since I only have an interest in anime-style I should start by reading what Japanese artists read. I've been trying to read it and even considering scanlating it, but it's a really involved project even to just read the thing (much less write an actual translation, much less follow the instructions inside) and so I'm wondering if someone else has already translated something like this that I can take the benefit of.

The only good translated anime art book I've come across is the Sketching Manga-Style series. The style is a bit outdated and the art isn't god-tier or anything, but it's still pretty solid.
There's also the How to Draw Manga series, but I honestly think it's pretty bad and the art is extremely hit and miss.
Other than that, the anime artbook translation market is pretty much barren. You'd think that there would be some companies that will fill in this gap, but I guess the weeb artist community isn't very profitable.
How much do better do you think that book is compared to our current library? Would love to see some scans if it's good.

I will try helping, but i ain't very good to be giving redlines around ( where's based hitokakuposter?), you didn't hide the arms & legs this time, great, the face looks more proportional now, her upper side is ok, her hair just needs a little more rhythm, without the other arm is a little weird too.But godamm, why you highlight her ass and leave it so sad, my dick is disappointed , one foot was very 2D too
the position of the legs is a bit awkward for this pose too, other thing is that your drawing in general feels vry flat, experiment more with construction

thats most likely becuase you need loomis aka fundies, if you ever checkd any anatomy book you should know the neck is kinda in the middle of the head more to the back maybe

and i dont know what were you thinking with that hair it looks like she shas some alien head or maybe you wanted todraw a really fluffy hair, if its the former then you better check your roomis if its the later then you have to give equal volume to the whole hair it looks like whe has more hair in the back

tdlr; think in 3D and back to your fundies

Yeah, backs are probably my biggest weakness, I'll go do some refreshers next time I sit down to study.
I also tend to overdo contrast, and maybe held back too much, but it also looked okay on the white background, and only really stuck out as under-contrasted once I threw on the bg colors. I drew her in one layer so I couldn't easily fix the colors so I left them, being done for the day.

Okay /ic/, I'm taking your advice. I'm gonna grind on fundies by copying faces in the style I like (80s) until I can do it myself by memory. If you're going to say "anatomy of the torso is fucked, it seems you don't understand what you're drawing", fucking explain what's wrong with it, either redline of show it on a real ref.

Or else shut the fuck up and don't critique, you're not helping anyone. Any retard can go and critique things, if they don't try to explain what they're thinking, you'll never know if they're just retards of honest to god good artists wanting to help better other people.
