Depends on what you want to do. For pen work pretty much everything will do, watercolour is best on very strong paper, and for soft pencils or charcoal you should go for something with a proper spine so it doesn't smear as much. It's not really that important though, just try it out.

Mine is relatively messy - I do quick marker checks all over the pages, and I cram multiple drawings on a page.

If I am doing something I’m really excited about, I’ll start a new page, but I like the organic thought process of random drawings on the page. When you look back through the pages it’s fun to remember what you were thinking about.

>> No.4112042

>>4112015
My sketchbook is messy and a hodgepodge of drawings varying from a 30 sec doodles to more meticulous stuff. I don't care what people see in my sketchbook other than a look into my process and my drawing ability, but some people want to really wow whoever looks through it, so they spend much, much more time making a finished illustration on every spread, creating more of an artbook than a sketchbook. Don't feel bad if your sketchbook looks like a sketchbook and not a ready-for-print art book, sketchbooks are meant for experimenting and practice, not a one-shot portfolio. Let tryhards be tryhards and just do what you feel is best for your practice.

An honest critique is that it is a bit messy, which could come down to that you need to be more confident when you lay down your lines. Try and imagine what you want it to look like in your head and think every time you put the pencil on paper. If you need a cleaner way to shade and make forms in your drawing try to learn things like hatching. Keep up the hard work, you've got a decent idea on anatomy if this was from imagination, you've just got to be more precise and confident clear with your lines. You've probably been told this, but reading the sticky does have a few really good traditional resources.

You have an aesthetically please style, but it's obvious you aren't so keen on drawing hands and feet. This is your sketchbook, and part of the fun of that is practicing things you've aren't used to drawing. Don't shy away because it wont look good on a page. Your portraits are looking very flat. I think you need to work more on your construction and anatomy. Specifically, work a lot more on your construction, and then work on anatomy.

Do some drawabox for a while. This is to work on your construction.

Maybe do Proko after? Or maybe a course on cgmasteracademy. This is for the anatomy portion.

Thanks anon. Here's a pic of tools from top to bottom.

>Pentel arts color brush pen
>Sakura Permapaque marker
>Pentel pocket brush pen
>Pilot Kakuno fountain pen
>White out correction pen

A lot of the work is done mostly with the pentel brush pen where it can create a variety of lines, as well as unique strokes when pressed on it's side.

The grey brush pen is obviously great for creating another set of values.

The sakura marker mostly covers larger areas so as to not waste the brush pen ink.

Kakuno is a backup incase I forgot my brush pen. Works nicely for fast gestures too.

And the white-out pen is for general mistakes.
