You have to remember that cumbrains will be cumbrains and most people don't notice/care when you do something greedy (e.g. look at every patreon ever and see them pay for things you and I would consider scams), so do what you want. If you're just a starting artist I suggest not paywalling your stuff right away though. If you're a literal who with no e-peen the vast majority of people won't bother giving you money, even if your art is super good

Setting an arbitrary goal before you do something is not productive. Just use your better judgement, decide when it's time to shift focus from primarily growing a fanbase to primarily siphoning money out of that fanbase's pockets.
10k followers could mean a huge community of people you interact with on the regular, a big chunk of whom would gladly support you based on your personality alone, OR it could mean a bunch of people who only followed you cause you drew flavor of the month garbage, who you didn't interact with at all, and you end up with 1 or 2 supporters on patreon despite being a good artist.
You could start paywalling at any time, just think about whether or not thats the most effective choice at that point in time based on your situation. It comes down to your popularity (marketing), your personality and the quality of your art.

Interestingly enough, you prompted me to consider my own little fanbase. Less than 5% interact with any art I post, and there are several possible reasons for that. Looking at some people who are both lower in followers and (I think) less skilled than me, they have a proportionally higher engagement rate. I think a slow but sure method of raising that number is to make vapid posts just talking/asking questions/whining about your life, stuff like "I feel like no matter how much I draw I'll never improve or get past my depression" or "Just saw x movie, y actor makes my heart drip cum." Also helps to leech off others' popularity by commenting on every lewd art post you see. Doesn't have to be particularly insightful, I regularly see people copy paste "I LOVE THIS," preceded by a long string of capital a's. Makes me sick to my stomach, but if it works it works. That's the most important thing, use your brain, find a method that works, and you'll be able to solve any problem you come across.
Sorry for the long winded post but I just want to be as clear as possible so a fellow d/ic/k can get a little bit closer to success

There was a thread last week where a professional level guy was being told to git gud if he wanted to get his first job. I follow several artists with great, professional portfolios who interact a lot and nobody follows them.
My art isn't even comparable but at this point I think art quality matters little.
Honestly I think if you start from zero in 2019 it's insanely hard to get a following with regular art unless you're outstanding.

Patreon would have been so great for comics if it worked like an actual subscription where you paid in order to receive a comic. Just because they don't have 100k+ followers doesn't mean they aren't successful/can't find work. This can totally happen if they spend more time applying for commercial gigs than they do building a social media presence.

There is not really a right answer for this. Art quality always matters but how good does it need to be depends on the context and the audience. Being prolific and putting a lot of time and even money into marketing yourself can make you very successful even if you're not incredibly skilled.

Even if you're outstanding its going to take a lot of marketing/social media effort to make yourself known if you're starting from 0. And nothing is stopping you from learning how to build an audience with your art as you become outstanding.

I don't know man, about patreon, I spend every month like 10-20 bucks on good artists that show their process or create tutorials.

I'd never pay for an artist just for them to draw, I can always see good art on pixiv.

But about exposure, in places like /h/ or reddit/hentai or ecchi, you can get pretty good exposure, I've encountered about 5 new patreons from these places.
