TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Alright so i just started drawing this week and have been grinding out stills and whatnot.

Just drew this guy from imagination but his face looks kinda off compared to the ones i drew by copying. I can't tell what i've messed up though.

>>4084646
The composition is fine by me, It has a classic look, postcard-y. The different layers of the background and their subsequent values pull away from the character good.

The character however I want to focus on... Generally because this is art, all that really matters is that something looks good, and either you capture the subtle essence of a lifeless or stiff pose, or you start jacking around parts to animate the picture against its will.

First you want to avoid super straight legs, or rather just things that look like tubes or sticks. It's good practice to incorporate a little bend at every joint if this pose isn't justified by some kind of justifying context.

Also, standing and grounded doesn't really scream "space" to me. So I added a horseshitty big titty embellishment version you can ignore, and then also a tacticool action variant of your pose to show what kind of force you have to exert against a flat perspective to make it look actiony.

The key with flat perspectives is to really crank at as many masses of the body as possible so you forget that it's actually just a flat perspective you're looking at. There's times to be flat and boring but generally not when holding a gun.

It's coming out of the right place and it's properly foreshortened so it's fine. It also continues to the flow of motion into the other arm so it makes things look more fluid. The 4th one is also good to go with if you're still nervous about how it will translate anatomy-wise, but it doesn't have the same fluidity.

1 and 3 look like the arm is dislocated because they're twisted so far up and back so I would avoid those versions.

Let's not start with the "talent" nonsense unless you have major physical or cognitive disabilities there is no difference. Anybody can learn how to draw. Things might be different in the upper 1% but in my opinion you shouldn't concern yourself in the slightest until you've put in a few years minimum. Things will be hard in the beginning, then they'll feel easy, then hard again. That has been my experience so far. When things get hard don't cop out and blame talent, push through.

I'm over half way through 250 boxes and it's not going well. I feel "good" boxes still result of luck. Linework is awful. I don't feel 3D by boxes on paper with no reference to anything. I can't figure out rules for making these boxes without vp and my lines are too inaccurate for imagining vp way off the paper.

I'm feeling awful. I might be a legit ngmi.

>> No.4091503

>>4091501
Cubes don't have to go to the exact VP to look correct.
All they really need to do is converge, and that's usually enough to sell that it's in perspective.
>for example, a cube doesn't necessarily need to have all the lines diminish perfectly to a point off the page, but you should make sure that they at least converge. if they are diverging off into distance, that's than error in the wrong direction. so make sure you follow simple rules like: lines converge in the distance, or the further unseen side of the ellipse belonging on a cylinder should have a greater degree (closer to looking like a circle) than the one that's closer and visible. you can just pick up some of these shorthands by observation and analysis of the real world, or you can develop them yourself by going through the nitty gritty of linear perspective. the bottom line is: make better illusions with your forms.

I feel like making the closer person (person 1) smaller kind of made the composition worse as well as not being perspectively accurate, it makes things feel uncomfortably far apart on the canvas, and visually boring. Here's my take on it. I used the big medium small principle roughly to try and fix the composition.

The person on the right(person 2) should have his arms resting on his knees, you'll see that in images of slavs squating.

I also used that same height multiplication technique from last time for the heads specifically.

Honestly it's a pretty difficult scene to pull off, it would require some more perspective knowledge, good feel for the mannequin and to study some slavs, but I think this scene would be easier to set up in 3D because of the dynamic perspective.

Hope any of that was helpful.

Just like >>4093943 said. Draw from life. Like, a lot. But don't just "draw what you see". Build the constructions based on what you're seeing. It helps a lot.

As for which construction to use... here's my /beg/ opinion.

- Loomis is a bit too loose
- Vilppu is a fucking boss but I feel like a lot of the construction is actually happening in his head and he's failing to translate it for us mere mortals
- Hampton is a bit too over the top and I'm never gonna construct all that shit for a throwaway panel
- Huston is my favorite because it's a nice middle ground (but I still use Loomis' "side cut")

Go learn like 3 or 4 construction systems, then find what you like and what you don't like from each, then mix and match.

But keep drawing from life for now. It'll help you with the positioning a lot.

Hi /beg/, sorry in advance for the wall of text, but your feedback in and answers have immense worth to me, so I hope you’ll reply anyway:

I have a serious problem when it comes to learning how to draw, and would really appreciate any pointers or tips you could give me.

I have been practicing how to draw from realism in order to eventually learn to draw from imagination, and I have been using the books from the sticky in order to get me started.

My end goal is to eventually attain the same skillset as a concept artist (for videogames), well knowing it’s going to take many years of practice.

Unfortunately, whenever my results (finished drawings) come out horrible, I get an overwhelming feeling that I have had wasted these 4 past months learning nothing, especially when it comes to drawing from imagination.
Despite this culminating in the background, I’ve relentlessly been drawing every day following /beg/‘s advice. This made my frustration grow for every drawing, but I’ve powered through it regardless.
Even on horrible days, I forced myself to draw, seeing it as a sign of dedication.

Fast forward to today, I broke down from stress a week ago, and have been extremely anxious about drawing since then.

I tried earlier again today to draw a bed from imagination, and immediately went up in the red after I was done, having overwhelming anxiety, very fast breathing, shaking hands and a feeling of complete futility.

It feels very much like some sort of traumatic experience.

Despite this, I have taken contact to real concept artists, such as the artist behind the concept art of Fallout 4, and the concept artist behind the cover for Slay the Spire, and they’ve both recommended taking real classes and meeting up with fellow artists.

I’m taking a real beginners course for drawing soon, starting a seek from now. Learning to draw is still something I absolutely both want to and need to learn.

I don’t know if you folks here at /beg/ have experienced this before, but any input, advice or coping methods/techniques you have tried or recommend is extremely valuable to me.

And thank you for taking your time to read that wall of text!

Why do you come here? Doesn't look like you're looking for critique.

How do I wrap my head around clothing folds? I'm trying to shade this cape, but I have no idea what I'm doing. How did you learn to do it?

That is okay friendo, You are simply just worried about your future, you are worried if all the effort you put in today will be worth it at the end of ends. Because let us face it the road is long and you are going to the unknown, you are going into the unconventional, the place people would say you shouldn't be going. You are thinking of the opportunity cost of it, what if won't work out, what if you won't make the grade even if you put everything onto it. That would just mean you wasted all this time and so on and on. While at the same time you are just looking at those artists that already made it and only see the gap between you and them a gap that you cannot even know how wide it is because you only saw the destination.

You are doing good that you draw every day, art is a grind especially at the very start but it seems that you are getting to a point where it feels to be overwhelming because you are not getting the results you are aiming for. The road is long but your brain is clearly demanding results which are not there yet.

I think for the the only rational thing to do is to just take a break. Okay anon? Take a day or two break from it and let your nerves calm down. If it feels that overwhelming then it could also be that other events of your life in general might be affecting you. Make sure to take care of yourself in general, if you are not healthy physically or mentally drawing won't work, just like eany other problem solving exercise won't work. Okay?

If you feel like you have learned nothing that could mean two thing, you are not learning the things that are necessary or you are just not noticing the things you have learned.

I support that you take a beginners course, that is the best way to help you get started on the basics, make sure you try take your notes and apply that knowledge you gained there. It takes awhile to internalize theory on the level to put it to practice regularly.

I'm positive you must have some sort of fabric at your place. Draw it, study it, play with lighting to see how it reflects on it yada yada

I think you should learn to see shapes and forms before jumping to autistical construction maymays
Now I'm not saying that autisitical construction maymays aren't good. They are, but only when you have some sort base. Do a bunch of studies then try again

I like your shading. Next time you try this, try to pay attention to the negative shapes created in places like between the legs or the shadow on the right side of her body. I find that this helps keep everything in closer proportion if I mess up my measuring.

Thank you for the response!

I agree in taking a break seems to be the most sensible thing I should do.
I think I’ll be happy about pausing endlessly grinding everything I see.
That said, I’m really looking forward to starting the real beginner’s classes, I really like student environments!

Unless this is the last painting you're ever going to make there's no reason whatsoever to worry about 'ruining' it. Worst case scenario is you do fuck it and learn what not to do next time, which is a good thing.
