**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

It's the immersion, not the studying in itself. What are you gaining from an anime study? Why not study from the real thing and learn about proportion, how form is affected by light and shadow, observing real world perspective, real world anatomy? You are more likely to learn and pick up bad habits from copying off something that was geared towards animation on a budget with simplified forms that look good in motion. You're shooting yourself in the foot and working with breadcrumbs instead of the real thing when "studying" off something that has all the elements of life sacrificed to meet a budget.

No, your favorite artist isn't going to teach you shit either you are only going to be a copycat and a lesser version of them and you wouldn't know how to approach something from imagination since you so heavily rely on copying off another. I hope I am getting through to some of you with this, it would probably save you years of time from having to unlearn all the bad habits you pick up a long the way instead of just studying from life and then deviate away from it with the abstract and idealized forms you picked up from the immersion of your favorite chink cartoons.

You should study anime, but you should study life too. Mindlessly copying anime girls won't get you very far, you need to understand what the stylized faces are supposed to represent, and you can only do that by studying reality. The greats like Yoh Yoshinari draw plenty of realistic studies in addition to anime art.

you study life then study your favorite artist (anime or not) and then try to combine into your style. studying life is great but it isn't my end goal. i like anime art style so i would like to draw it, not do realistic naked women (which is also cool, but not interested that much).

i try to mix ASG with more imagination/invention than just 1:1 study. also i like to ask questions because a lot of shit in anime is a whole field of itself.

thanks anon, it's flattering that someone's interested so here
in the last 18 months i've probably skimmed through all the resources that /ic/ talks about. these are the ones i chose to spend time with, in chronological order:
keys to drawing
watt's atelier video lessons
scott robertson's how to draw
scott eaton's anatomy
eric olson's perspective lectures
hitokaku
i'm definitely not saying that these are the ideal resources, and i'm certain that the order was suboptimal. i say this because i know that /ic/ is stupidly obsessed with minmaxing the optimal path. also i'll mention that i'm kind of a shitbag and i didn't fully complete any one of these, i just jumped ship when i thought i got what i needed. if there's anything else in particular you want specifics on, just let me know

In animation, if there's a mistake in anatomy, the show already moved onto the next shot so you forget that mistake often. It's also on a budget and time constraint so they can't give a detailed pass over every single scene to make sure everyone's anatome is perfect.
While in manga, the reader controls when he goes to the next scene. And we understand that some panels require more attention than others, it's why there's so many background shots and chibis, to save time for the artist.
But an anatomy mistake in a "money shot", in a large ecchi panel where the girl's drawn in more detail, that mistake is more noticeable.

I just buy sketchbooks from the dollar store. I used to have that bleeding problem so I had to put a scrap sheet of paper under each page. These new microns I’m using don’t bleed at all even on the thinnest scratchpad paper (pic related). Something to do with the pigment ink, I don’t know, but it’s great. I don’t have to put a piece of paper under unless I go over it with markers

There's a lot of room for improvement, mostly for your facial construction and general anatomy, but your lines also lack the basic line weight distribution which is expected of a lot of manga. I suggest you study some proper anatomy on the side while analyzing skilled mangakas of your liking, taking into the account of the difference techniques they use to convey form. Keep going at it, step out of your comfort zone, and eventually, you should find yourself improving.

Good luck.

i used to do figure drawing on those websites and i don't really like them. the models and perspective change so much from picture to picture and the poses can sometimes be really unnatural. i would start saving images that you feel like you can learn from (e.g. a photo that really shows how the neck connects the skull and shoulder girdle). or if you're willing to pay, i would get one of these pose catalogs from amazon japan. i found that i improved a lot after doing 1 or 2 figures a day from it for a month. it has photos of the same model in common poses at different angles with the camera at a consistent distance away

anyway it really doesn't matter too much i think, as long as you're knocking them out and then (self) critiquing. i was mostly concerned about you working on the same drawing for 2 weeks and apparently not making too much progress, so i suggested that you just move on

Did a study of an artist's picture of this character. It was a sketchy picture in general, so it was a bit challenging. It was also pretty low-res.

The most difficult parts were the line up of the eyes and trying to get the hair pieces not to look sloppy. Any advice is appreciated.

Anime in general all look nearly the same. It's the subtle differences like putting a lip a little higher or a nose a little lower that makes the huge difference. Of course there's the placement of the eyes too, but lets save that for another day. It's amazing how the human mind can be blind to these differences for a huge number of years before actually understanding where the lines belong to make appealing anime characters.

I did take your advice into practice and my new piece is referenced from a pose from Playboy.

However, I'm struggling a bit with the most important part of appeal and attraction: the face.

I think drawing should be just for the heck of it sometimes too, besides I don't think even having garbage anatomy/poses/dynamism/appeal etc. is my biggest problem.

the best tip i can give you anon is that at the stage you're at, keep your drawings, and when you look back at them a couple days later (sometimes even an hour), everything wrong will suddenly jump out at you.

advice at this point is practice a lot. But also look at the world around you-- how does this look at this angle? and so on.
personally i wouldn't even worry about anime, but if you'd like to, be critical about other people's styles-- angles and so on, but also comparatively, between artists. Try to understand.

it's kind of a cliche but don't focus on the results so much. just try to enjoy the feel of laying down ink on paper. sometimes you get bad drawings and sometimes you get good drawings. the ratio of good drawings will inevitably increase with time and practice

For the anons that care I worked on the drawing while high this is what the drawing is like now.

I kinda feel like I want to do more studies and improve fundies if I'm being honest.

hey wouldnt it be cool if marianne williamson could transform into a magical girl
wouldn't that be cool if she hired me for her campaign and i drew her as a magical girl and everyone saw?

nah, I wouldn't bother with that.
