I get this all the time asked to make assets for games, especially from indie developers. They say things like, “ I could get a college student to do it for less!” Or “don’t you want exposure?”

It’s like bitch, you think I got this guud so that I could be paid in exposure? Exposure doesn’t cover health insurance, food p, or the necessities for life. I hate dealing with people that think art should be cheap or free.

Had this happen recently. Was shopping around quotes on this site for a guy who wanted 6 comic pages, and he PM'd me, obviously interested because why would you message someone if you werent interested, saying "WAY WAY TOO EXPENSIVE I CAN GET AN INDIAN TO DO IT FOR UNDER 100"

I started getting smart with him so he told me to keep begging and fucked off.

I had this person contact me. I had no interest in actually doing their commission since at the time I had been receiving emails in a similar writing style that weren't interested in paying. Assuming it was the same guy, I decided to waste his time as much as possible and it ended up being extremely funny.
Long story short, don't take commissions from third-worlders.

Never ever go under $100 per page if to create one page took you more than 5 hours. It's simply not worh it. 5 year ago I draw in color whole 68 page comic + cover and lettering for only $3200. It was a nightmare.

IIRC, jump mangakas get paid like 10 usd for page and get royalties where they become rich, the also have to pay their assistants. So the important thing is selling.

If it's a minor change like having to move an eye over a bit, sure. Because that's my fault. But if it's something large like wanting to have a character in a different pose, no.
It's a good idea to make sure your client knows that after the sketch stage, things can't be changed. You will end up wasting a lot of time fixing things later down the road rather than fixing it early on when it wouldn't take as much time. It's not money friendly.

If you see a particular artist, check his webs, some tend to put in them if they are open for commission, so you don't waste time in asking things that already have an answer. Also, a lot of artist tend to put in some place of their webs "what they draw", so you just have to stick with that, so you don't waste your time and the time of the artist asking for things that both know that the artist will not draw.
They explain also the workflow, some in their webs, others just mail them to you, so you know how to procced; some make a sketch after you paid a part of the total, others recieve the money at the end, some point some stages to check the drawing with you, others not, etc.

Some artist put all in a image, the prices, the options of drawings, the process, the paid methods, etc.

My basic suggestion is to go straight to the point because there is nothing worse than those people who want to try to put together a conversation and then ask for a commission or request, hoping you have "relaxed" with it and accept easier.
A typical example is that they start by simply saying "hi", the email or message is literally that phrase, nothing more, then they wait for your answer and say "how are you?", And they go on and on, and then "hey could you do bla bla bla bla .... " Waste of time.

So is that, check his webs to see if they do commissions in first place, check if he put everything in an image or not, or text, later ask directly so both dont waste time.
