Can someone that's knowledgable about tablets make a general? Also, how many of you use screenless vs screen tablets? Is a screen tablet worth the shekels?

>> No.4083208

>>4082876
all depends anon.
The first point is if you had previous experience with the analog drawing, if yes, means that you have some habit with that so a screen tablet could be a better and faster option, this also depends in how decent is your drawings skills of course, if you are /beg/ in anything then doesn't really matter.
A screenless tablet is very good also and you can have the same final product than with a screen one.
In the end the main difference is those two things. If you used to draw in analog mediums still, like pen and paper, then a screen tablet could boost your work because you have more control in your fingers, you will need less strokes, less stabilization, more fast linework, etc., BUT a screenless tablet is really more more cheap, and for a decent screen tablet with decent pressure levels and all that, you could already get a screenless tablet.

In my opinion a screen tablet is the end goal. If you are serious with the shit, then that means that you also draw in traditional mediums to keep work on your skills, means that you do life drawings, and all that. But if you need to stay doing drawings the screenless is the first option for the price.
First the screenless, then the screen one.
If you take the drawing seriously and you have the money then go straight to the screen's one, but again if you take it seriously and you are not a kid that want to draw for get attention or feel special, so that you don't have a very expensive device in the drawer in the end,

>> No.4083258

>>4082876
Both have their pros and cons.
Screenless is cheaper even higher end ones, they won't hurt your neck, but getting used to it can take a while.
Screen tablets are way more intuitive to use, but of course cost more and depending on the angle they can really kill your neck. But the good thing is that you can basicly also use them as non screen tablets sometimes.

I would say get an entry level screenless first and actually get used to drawing digitally, the pressure levels, the shortcuts etc.

>> No.4083284

>>4083208
>>4083258
Thanks for the replies frens. I've heard lots about the neck/back pain that the one anon mentioned when drawing with screen tablets, kinda scares me. Starting with a entry level screenless seems like a good idea. Everyone buys Wacom, right? Should I get the largest size possible or what?
Also, what do you guys think about using standalone tablets (iPad Pro, thinkpad etc.) for drawing? Seems crazy expensive and I doubt I would do it but I've been noticing a lot of people using that stuff.

>> No.4083303

>>4083284
>Should I get the largest size possible or what?
Smaller tablets are easier to get used to, but might force you to draw with your wrist which is bad. Medium size is good.

>Everyone buys Wacom, right?
Not really, you can buy a huion or deco, I heard they're fine, and they only cost a fraction of the price of a wacom.

>Also, what do you guys think about using standalone tablets (iPad Pro, thinkpad etc.) for drawing?
Don't know anything about thinkpad, but iPads are nice, though they have their limitations, especially when it comes to the speed of your workflow.

>> No.4083345

>>4083284
Basicly the more high end you go the better it is to buy a Wacom, but entry level or mid range i would say XP-Pen or especially Huion is the best value for money. The biggest difference in that range is usually the amount of shortcut buttons or an additional small touchpad for zoom etc.
HUION New 1060 Plus might still be the best value for money for now.

If portability is a concern then xp-pen is definitely better in that regard. Huions are generally ok but the small things like flex and a wonky loose mini-usb port are cons.

The pen is grear, the quality os great, usb-C is quality as fuck and it also has a super helpful rotable dial and a gimmicky touchpad that helps browsing porn with one hand.

the main problem with android devices is someone wants to know, is not the actual devices, but the programs, they are so fucking bad, you could name with yor fingers the ones that could be fine for "serious" work:
>sketchbook
>infinite painter
>artflow
>medibang
aaaand... that's all, i think, yes

-sketchbook is fine but i don't know what is happening with the companie first they have licenses then dont then they unify all the programs in one sigle multiplatfrom application, that hey... it works fine, but they could use so many things of the stylus, like use the fucking button of the pencil to change from pen to eraser, or a inverted panels mode for left-hand people, and you need to make an account and all that to use it.... the stabilizer is shit also, they have rules thats fine

-artflow is fine but you need the full paid version to get .psd files, and is not that powerfull like to make finished pieces, in my opinion.

-medibang is for clean lineart, basic comics and anime related styl, nothing more

-infinite painter can be a great program but need updates, like the way you use the menu that forces you to exit the program when you quit a drawing instead of put you in the gallery.
They have the button option so is really good for sketches, but the pencils are... ok.

The tablet that i have has like 1024 levels of pressure, so is not that good, even with that i can do basic linearts, but no really make a finished piece with multiple layers. So i guess that the new ones that have the upgrade stylus in the case of the samsung's ones are far better, i have a friend that have one but never ask him to draw with it to test the programs, if i ever get the chance i will do it and and i will make a real opinion with authority

Got the V2 off your recommendation, Amazon 1-day delivery is crazy. It's pretty great! I thought it'd be a lot harder to use since I'm so out of practice but drawing with looking directly at my hand felt very natural.
Firstly this is so much easier to use for lineart. A lot more accurate than drawing directly on my Surface, no jitter or parallax of any kind is such a needed welcome. It's a lot easier to continue lines without getting that choppy, disjointed look that gives away it was 2 or more strokes. It also feels a bit more pressure sensitive, but that's probably a settings thing. Just need to figure out how to arrange my desk to fit my Surface, keyboard, and the drawing tablet. Only awkward things I noticed is that doing long strokes and trying to draw from my elbow/shoulder is harder, but that's probably because I was drawing with the tablet on my lap. Sketching right on the screen still feels more natural, but I'll definitely be relying on the V2 anytime I'm doing lineart from now on. And the batteryless pen? Priceless, my fingers feel blessed.

Info + personal experience dump for anybody reading, hope it helps.

been doing digital art for a while so I got to try a few different tablets over the years:
>Started with the 2nd generation wacom bamboo
>Got a Huion screenless (it was ok but died in a year)
>Upgraded to Intuos 5 Touch for school (I still have it now, bought it secondhand and it's been about 5 years)
>Used Cintiq 27QHD in school
>Bought Ipad Pro + Apple pencil (1st gen 10.5in)
>Recently bought XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro
The old Intuos series is solid and mine has gone through some accidental abuse. I don't think it'll break as long as you don't fuck up the port. Avoid the new Intuos series.
Cintiq was actually not a great experience for me personally, I didn't like the feeling of drawing on it, I think it might've been the parallax. I didn't notice the same disconnect with Ipad pro.

I've drawn my Ipad Pro almost daily since getting it (end 2017). Size might be an issue for some people but I'm used to drawing in A5 size sketchbooks, and 10.5 is ok. If I were to buy it again, I might go for the 12.9 for the battery life. It's annoying to have to charge your ipad after drawing for 4-6 consecutive hours. You can draw while it charges but occasionally it doesn't register your touch gestures/lines and is generally more annoying. Pen battery life is good.
Procreate also has given me consistent issues with it randomly not registering my touch inputs, and I'd have to lock and unlock the ipad to get it to work again, no idea why it happens. This happens occasionally and is a mild annoyance, and my touch inputs work on other apps/homescreen when this happens, so it's a procreate thing. My other friend with the ipad pro 12.9 of the same generation has the same problem.
CSP also runs ok on the Ipad pro, even with the 10.5's screen size, but you really have to spend time to sort out a workspace that's not cluttered to shit for it to work decently. (1/2)

>> No.4102925

>>4102924
XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro has the same disconnect as with my experience with Cintiq, and I noticed the calibration being a little more off than the Cintiq's, it's noticable - when you try to draw a line and it ends up about 1-2 px lower than where you intend. I've re-calibrated a few times and it's still a bit off, I don't know if this is a case of me being continually autistic or the tablet's issue.
The anon ( >>4081113 ) who mentioned the 15.6 Pro not registering really light contact as strokes is right. My 12 Pro has the same issue, and that light contact would register as a line on my Intuos and Ipad. I have a light hand, so it's quite jarring sometimes, but if you're more heavy handed I don't think it'll be an issue.
The 12 Pro also caused some noticable differences in brush behaviour on CSP for me, eg the same custom pencil brush that works consistently on my Ipad and Intuos came out really light on the XP-Pen. The other pens are fine, so I'm not sure it's a pressure curve issue.
I do both lineart + color and paintings, and I would personally still use my Ipad or Intuos for lineart. I don't know if it's worth getting a screen tablet just to be forced to adapt to its quirks to get results, if your art is lineart heavy. If there are anons who uses this to do lineart just fine and I'm just retarded with the calibration, please let me know. I bought this thing because I wanted to continue working while my Ipad charges... (2/2)

XP-Pen 12's drawing space should be considerably smaller than A5 but still much bigger than A6
15.6's drawing space should be somewhat bigger than A5, so I think I should get this one instead, because I never really use all of the drawing space, just the middle part of it, as clearly evidenced by the state of my old Bamboo.

Try to use it with a different USB-C cable, maybe you just got a bad connection.

To put it in perspective, the iPad is a cheaper iPad Pro Gen 1, and the Air is similarly a budget iPad Pro Gen 2 that keeps the laminated display, so no parallax. Plus it's a little bigger.
The best option is a Pro 3 or the new one that'll be announced soon.
But sitting right at the middle, the Air is the best bang for buck other than the refurb section. Good for artists that think the 9.7 is too small or want the nicer screen.
>>4102125
Not completely true. A 4k by 4k resolution will produce 8 layers. And doing screen resolution which is about 2k will obviously be more. Not an issue if you're not working larger than 4k. The Air or a Gen 2 refurb has double the RAM and is still reasonably priced.

For what it's worth, since I know a lot of people prefer buying new. The refurbs basically come new in box because of the replaced shell and battery, plus the standard warranty. Can't go wrong if you're considering one.
