**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

This is why these threads end up having people posting other people's art instead of their own it's ends becoming and inspo thread rather than a study general. You're encouraging aspiring artists to be as derivative as possible and dissuading creativity.

Being a human copy machine will not make you better at establishing and anime aesthetic. It's understanding form and abstraction of form. Nothing wrong with the occasional study, I'm just not a fan of conditions laid out in OP as I think it steering aspiring artists wrong fundamentally. Draw from multiple sources, as well as draw from life. Turn real life subjects into anime. Anime is an abstraction of reality.

>> No.4048950

No, never. People usually get accused of tracing if there's a huge gap between their skills, for example exceptionally good forms and perspective but completely no idea about colors and design. Or great proportions and light placement but chicken scratch. Otherwise there's no basis to accuse someone of tracing.

>> No.4048954

>People usually get accused of tracing if there's a huge gap between their skills

I can see why that is since I don't share much "finished" stuff online or pictures that show the extent of my skill if I give enough shit to commit time to it. But it's every time I post something that isn't a shitscribble I get accused of tracing.

So i take it as a compliment. When i get accused of tracing that means this work looks better than the rest.

you made the feet too small. you may have a preference for smaller feet but the larger feet in your reference are a part of the composition and pushed proportions. also, the values are incorrect in your drawing. notice how the white lines break up the giant claw hand from her leg. in yours, there’s little visual indication of the hand being separate from the leg, which creates a tangent. I would put the right eye (her left) more to the side, I bet you drew using Loomis and that's an issue I've encountered, it's very difficult to adapt the more stylized it is but it's crucial to achieve the vibe. While in a Loomis head there is one plane and only the nose sticking out of it, in an anime head the eyes are pushed inwards so lay on a different plane than nose and mouth, so it explains why her left eye would be more to the side. I've tried to figure this out but it's extremely difficult to Loomis a style like pic related. What is infuriating is that it seems to be solely muscle memory and no actual constructing from all the videos I've seen. Or you have to imagine the whole head in 3D and feel the landmarks.

Drawing from imagination is irrelevant until you have studied A LOT drawing from observation, so much so that the images of what you've been drawing is a part of your long term memory and subconscious.

A lot of begs preoccupy themselves with wanting to draw from imagination but thats kind of like wanting to skip to the endgame of being a virtuoso violinist who can recite difficult pieces perfectly from memory a few months after. That's one of the last skills you master. Kim Jung Gi himself said it took him 10 years to draw full figures from imagination in one of his demos.

However, once you get pretty good at drawing what you see without many flaws, then what you can do is practice drawing what you've just drawn FROM memory right after. Say you took some time to draw a hand. After you finish that drawing, try to draw it many times from your memory of it without looking at it. That's how you learn to draw from imagination.

Very good advice, another anon said that practice should be solely drawing from photos or life, then you can try to draw from memory basing on what you've learned. Also, I've heard many very good artists say you should study only one thing at a time, so you don't draw torsos, then eyes and then practice perspective in one sitting. The approach seems great since I've finally found myself rapidly improving, I recommend Proko poses since there are like 200-300 photos in each series. I think they were uploaded in the artbook thread, also Super Pose Books from the yande.re list here:

a caveat i'd add to this is even while you're still in the early learning phases of observational drawing you should still be doing a lot of applied imaginative drawing i.e; taking the things you study and then altering them to practice your creative & design skills. this could be as simple as trying to draw a study you did from a few different angles & experimenting with how different light/color passes convey different moods or it could be trying to redraw it in different styles that you like. the important part is to always put yourself into situations where you have to think critically and make choices instead of just passively copying what's in front of you.

So what I'm getting from this is in order to git gud you have to:
>1. Find an illustration you want to draw/achieve
>2. Try to imitate the style as close as possible and create your own illustration (don't try to draw an exact copy of your source, just the atmosphere and feeling of the illustration)
>3. Complete the illustration, don't stop midway even if it's terrible
>4. Compare your drawing with the original source and think what needs to be done in order to achieve a result similar to your source.
>5. Repeat from step two ad infinitum until you achieve your goal

Different anon, try to do as much as possible while it's zoomed out. Zooming in is only for details when you're 100% sure of the placement. Canvas size doesn't matter much when it comes to sketching. Just keep the aspect ratio correct, resize before starting to render

what the fuck do you mean you black nigger darkie all I did was study anatomy to do that shit, what do you want me to do, waste my time studying every individual muscle one by one in every conceivable direction? You don't even need to do that, I draw girls, they have smooth arms, and plus muscles can be grouped up into bunches. I swear it's like you want me to take a billion years through suffering darwinian evolution and natural selection till I get the perfect lifeform when higher levels of organization in drawing can be easily made through simple time spend in contemplation and observation. Once you see the image, you're good, that's all you need. I'm currently seeing legs because all i've been doing is drawing is just drawing legs all week. In fact why do I even need to show off how good I am at imagining things in a tutorial based on structural processes? Structure has nothing to do with what you can imagination, they're completely separate functions. Structure is a framework of proportions that you can build off of and move around easily. But if you're structures all fucked you won't be able to get an image and it wastes energy with redraws, which is why this is an important thing to know and why I did this shitty tutorial.

My gosh you fucking d/ic/klets are completely delusional. This is insanity, do you just want people to grind reference photos in stagnation mindlessly forever, will the suffering of us slaves appease you then?

looking back this could probs be taken the wrong way so for clarity; I'm actually for the studying all the general body parts, and studying them in every direction has been so fruitful for me I would argue it is essential for freedom in art. however not every individual section of muscle and part is useful to study; quite a few can be grouped together for simplicity. If you don't draw muscular characters (which I don't, I draw anime girls), then it is not important that you know every muscle, but rather that you know the noticeable general form of the collective muscles.

For example, I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would study the shape of bones, you simply do not need to know what a bone looks like.

With the box form thing i can figure out the angle but at the shape at the bottom right looks off and I'm not sure where the ribcage ends. Also、I don't know how wide any body parts are in heads. Like is the right side of the ribcage supposed to be further? Does the arm start further to the right?

After drawing the head I'm not sure if i'm supposed to take proportion from the top including the hair or like a little lower.

I don't really get the neck to clavicles and the shape of the deltoids. Like where does the neck start curving into the shoulders.

Also is the left side of the image supposed to be closer towards the line of symmetry?

I keep having to redraw the 3/4 angle because I don't know what i'm doing wrong or right and it takes me forever.
