Depends on what the designs are for.
Horn girl is cool, fox girl is cool and bottom right is nice (personal preference). If you are designing a character however, it is best to keep head positions roughly the same, so people can see the concepts clearly.
If it is for portraiture, then it is different and not as important except for proportion and composition, but it is a bonus to add good design.
I would recommend you to do some studies and make faces with realistic proportions in different angles(no stylization), so you get a better idea of the facial features and so stylization can be easier in the future.

Leaving something I'm trying as of late, for C&C. I'm doing backdrops by looking at reference then trying to put a character or something inside from imagination. Needs clean up.

>>4041197>>4041658
I like the second row from the top, middle one, but I have bias for smiles. The one with the big ears I guess has the most interesting silhouette but it also reminds me of Final fantasy stuff. The smiling one also has a nice one, visual interest.
Which one you should choose depends on mood and all that, what's the goal for the character.

>>4041219
Maybe I'm missing something here but it looks great! except for the feet. They look out really of place, like done by someone else.

>>4041580
The angle of view feels flat (like using telescopic lenses), the hut repetition is too obvious, try and break those up. Values don't look bad, you could try to add more breakage in the lighting but that's one of the things I struggle myself.

>>4042254>>4042256
Maybe on your interior details use more massing of textures, transitions, less on the light side, more on the dark side then go pure black shapes. And thinner lines for those details, but it looks really good. I really want to see the finished one.

>>4042306

>>4042443
I really like them, really nice gestures, and look really solid, nice play of sharp and soft lines.
Many look like negative/neutral emotions but I guess that's the personality you are going for.
The annoyed ones at the top you could try to push the eyelids closer or the frown, or mark the cheek, overlap with the lower lids.

This mostly, I don't know cat anatomy but I think is the levator muscles? But mostly when the mouth opens the muscles around the nose and muzzle go up, so they overlap the bottom eyelid, or push out. So you can mark those lines. More so if you are looking from below. Or just touch up the eyes for more punch.
They look good also those past ones, some better than others but is nice see you playing with the gestures.

>> No.4042747

Oh wow thanks for pointing that out! I didn't know they acted like that when the muzzle goes up. It's forever going to be in my memory along with that gif now, haha.

Some are certainly more inspired compared to other ones, but they are a good way for me to loosen up when waking up. One thing I really would like to pay attention to more is composing them all on my sketch page better, although it's been pretty difficult to focus on that.

this was rather quick so im sorry that i couldnt replicate your brushwork and what not, but ill go over some quick edits i think it needed (its a really cool idea btw).

The first thing i did was edit the background to be focused in a bit more so the composition led closer to the panther's face. i also added little bits to sort of imply that it might be foliage, to give more story (this was done a bit lazily so use your imagination).

then i went to work on the panthers face. it was a bit derpy but nothing that couldnt be saved. the biggest problem was his sort of simpsons lip, where his muzzle didnt protrude, but ramped downward. i also lowered the eyes and pulled the far end of his muzzle back in since it went too wide. to give the face a bit more detail i added lines to show where his face would wrinkle, given that hes probably pissed.

for small edits, i lost some edges around his tail and belly (i went hard around the tail area but that was personal preference, its up to you), i added some rim lights, and i put a ground plane under the dudes butt, sort of. your lighting scheme here was sort of hard to identify so im sorry if i messed that up, i didnt exactly know what was going on.

hope this quick thing helps at all, cheers.

i finally decided to get into watercolors again and discovered how to "desaturate" things I believe. I have little to no idea as to how to paint with watercolors, any guidance? I used the solid type and a brushpen.

>> No.4043546

>>4043530
Watercolor does best in multiple layers and you need to do a little planning before you start. As a beginner you should draw out what you're doing before laying down paint. Even pros like James Gurney do this. The contrast you have on the eyes is pretty good but you put too much color down. I suggest you stick to the solid pan colors alone and save the brush pens for traveling. It's hard to control the amount of flow from those pens.

Mind of Watercolor on youtube has good videos for beginners. This video is a good example of using layers to build up your image.

I like the mood, in terms of the composition I'd make the frame wider and add a few more trees near the foreground to help lead the eye to the bird. I'd also push the lighting a bit more, it can help sell the mood and your focal point (the bird) could get even more attention. is the tangent of that middle tree branch with the waterfall intentional?
it's the only thing I am looking at.
Like, Idk much about this stuff but the effect it has on me, personally is like.
I see that part, and my eyes just stop there. Literaly time freeze. Can't move.
Same with the bottom branch.

Assuming you've got a tablet, set your brush's opacity or flow to pen pressure. Color pick from one of the flat colors, brush lightly over the color you want to blend it with. It will produce an intermediate color between the two. Color pick that color and paint between the two. Color pick the resulting mixed colors, rinse and repeat until it's blended to your liking. Keep in mind though that sometimes mixing together two tones, for example a shadow tone and a light tone, can produce a washed-out muddy color, while you may some times want a more saturated version of that in-between tone. Either pick the color from the color wheel, or blend the two colors, pick the mixed color and adjust its saturation in the color wheel.

>> No.4046199

Yeah, something like that. You tweak the brush options to your liking to get the results you want some people only use pressure with opacity, others use flow. Some use custom textured brushes while others only use the default round one.
Usually blending is done in one layer, unless you're experimenting something you might want to delete later if you don't like it.

So this is the final little explanation. I just wanted to try my hand at composition in order to tell a better story and make the scene more interesting. Not to downplay your piece, I didn't know exactly what it was about but I played around with the same theme. I just thought about what this big rock is. It attracts a fine light source to it, and birds sit perched to it. I gave it a happy mood with groups of birds and leaves shining in the light over it. It adds detail in the area as well as contrast. It tells us a little story, while leaving questions. It gives us a sense of mystery. I hope this helps.

How many brushes do you guys use in your paintings, excluding those that you use solely to blend? How heavily do you rely on textures/imperfections in your strokes? I'm a complete beginner to digital painting so I just want to know how many brushes I should alternate between while I block in colors, for the sake of variety. Right now I'm just using a hard rectangle brush and one that looks like an oil brush.

Also, if you have experience with PS and CSP, which do you find better suited to painting? I've heard a lot of anons say PS has a better brush engine, but I also hear the opposite sometimes.

I think you're on the right track, you've set up a basic palette and have every thing you need to render out the form. To take it further you could just color pick and blend by going around the form. After blending the colors and values ought to look more uniform, from there you could push the form further by adding a highlight down the middle to show that it's a cylindrical form and restate the shadow. Pic related is a quick example. I just color picked, blended around the form and added some highlights + form shadows to accent it. Used a round brush at first, making sure I varied the opacity as needed and also a soft round brush. Hope that was somewhat helpful.

i think what doesnt help is that im relatively new to digital (although the reason im not posting in beg is that ive adapted from trad painting so its not a huuuge stretch) but i keep switching programs, i was using firealpaca at first before i heard about krita, and today i downloaded photoshop and im gonna give that a go. thank you so much for blending it a little, thats a useful reference for me, also the fact that you included which brushes you used makes you an S-tier poster. how do i then make it look realistic and not too "blurry"? i get the feeling that any non-blurry stuff i add just looks out of place once everything else has been smoothed. also is pic related any good (left buttcheek) or have i just made the same mistakes but smaller?

>> No.4047462

>>4047430
You're blending seems okay but it looks like your brush size is a little on the small side. It could help if you started out with a bigger brush, blended a little and then refined with a smaller brush. Also I think playing with the opacity of your brush can be super helpful, since you already have a base you can work on top of that and further define the forms. Maybe even glaze a bit of the lighter color over the butt with a low opacity soft brush to unify everything a bit. It's a little like glazing and layering in traditional. And about the blurry vs non-blurry thing, that's a matter of knowing where the form is turning away from the light, where it overlaps and where it's round. For the butt cheek itself you could paint quite softly but then you can contrast by adding a harder edge and cast shadow where the cheek overlaps with the leg. In my example the hardest/least blurry part was where the cheek meets the leg because that is probably where the there would be the least amount of light. Then there's the center of the cheek where the form turns away from the light, it's a round form so I made the transition softer but I tried to make the separation of dark to light apparent. Essentially just keep the round areas soft/blurry but add harder more sharp areas where form is turning away or where there are creases or shadows. Adding the highlight down the middle of the leg and distinguishing between dark/light does a lot of the work for you. A lot of this stuff is intuitive so I'm sure you'll pick up on it once you practice some more with digital, it could also be helpful to try painting some basic forms like spheres and cylinders so you can get a handle on how digital works. You seem to be on the right track. Anyways this is kinda long so I'll stop now.

In terms of design the character looks bland. for example: I would add more hair running down its back and some on its forearm. That would add some repeating patterns, adding interest to the character. The horns themselves also don't stand out as much as they mirror the arms in both shape and angle. So change the shapes on them (big changes, either even bigger and thicker or much smaller). Look at goat horns, how they curve backwards and then out again.
Great rendering though, like the anatomy on that thing.

Don't you have a favorite artist or something? Someone you want to imitate? They probably have a video tutorial.
There are many different ways to render, it can be done in one layer, it can be done with lot of layers, filters and tricks in general, some people do a black and white layer and then apply color on top of it. Most artists use many layers and flatten these layers into one many times during the process of dozens of hours.

How well do you know basic fundamentals of art? Do you know about values and all that?

I could recommend some process videos I know, but they may be too cartoony for your tastes

Your main problem right now is how you place your brushstrokes. The more you can convey of the form with least amount of strokes the better.
Getting the "light" right, which consists of form and value is the most important part to get the skin looking realistic, and then comes texture and color.

Your blotchy horizontal strokes not only don't convey form, but they give a gross scaly texture to her skin.

Are you trying to figure out how to blend?.

Your downwards 3 quarter view has issues. Upper right and 3rd row down center could be a lot better. I don't know what's going on with 2nd row left either. Bottom left is questionable. Good views down the center row except for the third one down, though. I know this is practice but you should work on the ones I pointed out.

compliments are simply compliments, it doesn't mean your art is gud. You have to improve both traditionally and digitally to the point where if you post on /beg/ The admins will complain that you don't belong there anymore. That's when you know that you've leveled up.

Your average 14 year old artsy kid is around as good as you. The sooner you admit this, the sooner you can actually improve. Including picture just in case you want to hit me with the "POST YOUR ART THEN FAG"

I know what i'm talking about, as do a good amount of the users here. People may compliment you but that doesn't mean you're good enough for actual criticism yet. You're still at the point where you should be studying basics of anatomy, values, sketching, etc. I get the feeling this might be trolling but i'm saying this just in case it's not, you're only holding yourself back by acting like that. To improve you have to first admit your flaws and skill level.

It's a good start. I like the drawing and composition. There are too many dark values though. You could be more selective with your darks and keep your darkest blacks for the focal areas. Maybe add white too in some areas.

>>4049778
Here it's the opposite. The values are too light. The white background is affecting your perception of values. Test it with a grey one and you'll probably see what I mean. The perspective of the mouth isn't quite right and it's slightly too low but otherwise I think the proportions are pretty good.

>> No.4050035

I agree with the other anon for the rocks. The lighting needs some clarifications too. Where does it come from. There is no real indication of where the lightsource is since it should at least be brighter than the light on the character. The upper part should be darker as well if it isn't lit by anything. Also the right hand. The composition is nice. It will look good when it's finished.

Another point, this is how I did: leave /beg/ as soon as possible, it's a shithole, albeit a necessary shithole. Leave as soon as you see that the majority of works there are worse than yours, consistently from thread to thread. But you might not be good enough for this thread right away, spend some time elsewhere, maybe not on /ic/ at all. Post in draw threads on other boards, or on other websites. If you stay on /ic/, post exclusively in threads that encourage you to draw/post work, challenge threads etc. ignore bait threads, shitposting, whining threads, or any threads that start with a pepe (I have nothing against the meme itself, but I've yet to see 1 (one) pepe thread on /ic/ worth replying to, in more than 2 years here, it's a 100% flawless indicator of a garbage thread, you can check in the catalog right now). I don't know what you're going for but I can tell you what's going on.
If you are TRYING to do a muh style thing then so be it, I can't critique you on that but whose to say who will like it.
But if you were TRYING to make this realistic I see that you smudged all of your shadows out. There are no clear or defiend planes. It gets dark in the armpit but we can't tell where the latisimus dorsi turns into the breast, they're litterally just one solid shape. And where you put the line doesn't even look right, its like in the middle of the shadow instead of at the edge of it.
Your adding of these silly lines is just to add some edges because you don't know how to pa int them. Learn how to paint edges and planes. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Don't try to make some "beautiful" finished piece and just work on making a lot of small pieces that teach you how light and shadow work.
Start with black and white.

I don’t think I planned out the perspective well enough, somethings just look off, I like the composition but the perspective obviously needs work. Can any anon do a quick perspective redline or something for me please? I’m having trouble figuring this out

Really digging the symmetry with the curved lines. The beast's mouth looks a bit flat to me, I'm not sure if its the teeth, or tongue, or what though.

It looks completely bashed. Even if it wasn’t, why would you paint something to look bashed?

I like listening to music personally, but a lot of it is just training yourself to sit down and draw for hours at a time.

I also highly recommend you go to the /beg/ threads, since based on your art you could use a lot of improvement.

No you can't. You give up because you are not satisfied with your results and can't draw what you'd like to draw.
That's the case for me at least.
Go back to grinding fundies.
