depends on what they want. a single subject shoulders up portrait usually goes for 200 usd if they want it in oils its significantly more. most 3 sibject portraits i charge somewhere around 700-900 usd. nobody wants a 3 subject in oil because the price is just astronomical compared to what most people can afford.

I'll let you know if I want a direct copy of my photos, then.

Seriously though, your older portrait studies are really nice. In some of your recent ones (specifically soldiers/marriage ones) the lighting just makes it feel really unnatural.

It looks like you've just used a colour picker to do the work, and on the soldier one It looks like you've just painted over the photo because the edges between those colours look like jpg compression. You're welcome to say "but I didn't do that", but that's what it looks like. You're welcome to keep doing that if you want to make money instead of putting in the effort, but it hurts your output after a few years, and stifles your possible growth.

I suggest you spend some time thinking about the way old artists would approach the lighting for the older portraits, specifically how soft the light is, what parts of the face are illuminated, etc. There is a book with a lot of info you might find useful, I can't remember it's name but I remember that the author used red to draw, and was something like "everything I know about portraits" or "drawing the head", something like that, but you should read about that to get an idea on how you can improve them.

If you keep painting directly from photos, it will cripple you. Learn how to make a good portrait, and then import the proportions of their faces onto what you make.

Easiest way to get started now is to make an instagram, facebook, etc to post your work there. Go to r/redditgetsdrawn and draw/paint people there for exposure and practice. just look at what other people do in terms of branding. when i am doing a commission people are paying me to get the best likeness that i can, so i dont take liberties with colors, form or composition like i can with personal paintings. when im doing a portrait for someone else, its a product before anything else because thats what they are paying for. this is an oil painting ive awhile back. if i were taking any shortcuts i really wouldnt be able to produce this quality on a physical canvas but i have many examples of this. but regardless, thanks for the critique, i will keep it in mind.

I like the colours you used in the other 2 pics, although the white lighting on the first one is garish. The second one is great, though. I like how you've blended the colours, although I think some more careful definition of the forms of the abdominal muscles would go a long way.

>>paying to get the best likeness
You can say this, but please know you're using this as an excuse to take a shortcut and not put in extra work because you are scared it will not turn out right. You aren't taking liberties if you are reproducing a photo, you are limiting yourself.
Practice transferring proportions of a face to the same face in a different angle, it's hard, but you have the skill to do it. I think it's discussed in a loomis book (no meme) how to do this, it's pretty much having them side by side and drawing lines from one to the other to have the right proportions, but he discusses it better. If you feel you can only get their likeness through copying a photo, then in your own time practice not doing it. it is a crutch that you can discard at any time, but you have to practice not using it.

Download all of his paintings in the highest resolution available. look at them and think about why they are so attractive. Look at the brush strokes and think about how Sargent has placed each stroke so it has a purpose in the whole painting. Think about the colours he used, what areas are muted and what areas are vibrant. Change them to greyscale, and think about how he depicts light on clothing and incorporate it into your work. Look at the drawings, and think about what he takes into consideration at the start of a portrait. to help your own process.

Nice work with the folds on the gown. I'm only going to roughly suggest some colour changes.

the bright area on the hair takes a lot of attention. I lowered it's value, saturation, and also a cooler hue while adjusting some of the darker shadows too. Some small highlights to suggest the flow of the hair will look much nicer.

Knocked back the light area on the dress, too. moved the shade forward to reduce the attention it demands on your eyes, it's better to keep the face the main focal point. Also, added some grey-er vibes into the shade of the dress to give it a more pleasant feel.

It's good that you aren't simply flipping the picture to create the reflection, but you're doing something backwards there. We should be able to see more of the underside of objects, not less, in the water. Compared to looking at the object directly, that is. Light as bright as the sky in the water too, don't be afraid of high contrast.

Don't think that was the thing you were asking about though. Zoom out and squint at it, you've dropped a lot of contrast in the mid ground, a good opportunity to include some interesting shapes. More details in the foreground will make the picture more realistic, like it has depth - without having to detail everything. Don't be afraid to lose some edges, either.

I meant finished as in im gonna stop working on it, its definitely not a "finished piece". It was more of a value and shape study.

But do people really spend that long on finished pieces in general? would i really need 10 more hours to make this finished, what would I work on in those 10 hours? Introducing more shapes, or clean?

Don't listen to him, no such thing as a finished piece. Everything should be a study and should be done at the edge of one's skill and within a set timeframe.
Anyway your piece has really nice values. However the women is too dark, the darkest values should be closest to the camera. Also the ground highlights could be put in better perspective by narrowing their up-down lengths in comparison to their widths, easily doable if they're on a separate layer. Good work and don't listen to crabs.

Cool aesthetic but doing fine arts doesn't exempt you from needing to learn perspective and form.
That cross is not drawn correctly in perspective, and it's the only solid form in the piece, aside from the scribble hand, and confusing body on the right guy. Making the everything feel very amateur-pretending-to-be-deep.

If you are the person I think you are, I see your work all the time on the Waifu Factory. I think it would benefit you to simplify the face a bit more and introduce more variety in the design of your shapes (in the stripes, the hair, etc.)
One thing I like to do is draw a big shape and then cut inside of it with a smaller one, which automatically creates an asymetric ratio of shapes without too much work.

Bro, study your fundamentals, and form etc.
It looks to me like you are just randomly adding cel shading etc,
and you aren't really thinking about shadows as a tool to define the form.
To me, idk if it's only me, or if I am autistic, but the shading of the legs suggests that it is going inward, and
then the feet are broken, like nothing looks connected. It doesn't look like she is a solid object in space.
Like, study your fundamentals. You have no knowledge of perspective/you aren't thinking about perspective.
The hair looks really cool, the folds and the attention to detail is nice. Overall, it looks very polished, which is nice.
But the fundamental drawing is flawed, and nothing, NOTHING you do will make this look good. No matter
how much you polish it etc etc, you have to study your fundies. GO BACK TO THE FUNDIES.

I'm doing these rough renders trying to get a feel for what the process should be like, at the moment I'm just putting colors down and seeing what sticks. Not sure how to give it depth and make it less muddy. Feels like solid brush strokes are too hard but blending them together makes for an airbrushy look. I don't know the first thing about rendering, like if I should keep layers separate, or if I should paint from darkest to lightest, or if I should rely on blending modes. I have had some success in the past with doing values first and then adding color, but I don't want to do that.

I really like the lines you did, and so I thought it would be fun to colour her. On the left I went for a more neon-ish vibe, on the right I went for more tame colours,

I stuck with a light source from overhead (sun, or something), so it's important to cast the shadow of the tits far down. You did some pillow shading on the abdomen on yours, which shouldn't be there.

As for the brush, I don't really know what program you're using, so it's hard to give much advice, but generally you should be using a bigger brush with soft edges and then get smaller. It looks like whatever you're using has hard edges, which leaves those unsightly edges in shading like on the hips/boobs.

Layers are fine. you can experiment with adjusting colours easily to train your eyes, but it's good to be able to do it all on one layer.
Light to dark doesn't matter most of the time, and mostly depends on context. if I'm pulling from light into dark, I'll think about how the light sources is falling over the form, if it's from dark to light I'll be thinking about how the shadow is cast.
I don't even know what blending modes are.
Doing values and then colour is good if you really want to pay attention to the values of a piece. It's fine to do values > colour > merge layers and then flesh it out more.

When doing shading, my general work flow is to do a base flat colour. Then, with a big brush do all cast shadows about where they should be (so now it's 2 colours), then add darker shadows where light wont get (Ambient occlusion). blend the light areas and the shaded areas into each other. Do your best to not use parallel strokes to blend (eg on the boobs and hips) You should try to blend the colours into each other, rather than along each other. It's fine when getting the initial colours down but you will have more success blending them together.
Do the highlights last. They are the best part, but always save it until the very end.

I'm too dumb to put it into mathematical terms but as long as it's being hit by light, no matter how shallow the angle, it's still in the light family. as soon as it hits the Terminator (whose shape is what determines the cast shadow), it drops very rapidly (almost 100-0) to shadow.

Also consider a camera's exposure: if you have it open enough to see details on the shadow side, the light side becomes washed out. If it's closed enough to see form and shapes on the light side, the shadow family loses detail (unless hit by reflected light). This is how we know the Apollo 11 photos are fake btw, if the shutter speed and exposure of the cameras are closed enough that we don't see stars, all shadows should look near pitch black since there's probably not a lot of reflected light.

What he means is to have your active area be in shadow while the passive be in light, or visa versa. Also that value doesn't change depending on the angle how we like to think it does, pic related is how it actually works. >> No.4039069

Yes, that's the cosine function. Or, rather, the sine because they measure the angle to the surface instead of the angle to the normal, but it's the same shit basically.

>>4039050
>as long as it's being hit by light, no matter how shallow the angle, it's still in the light family. as soon as it hits the Terminator (whose shape is what determines the cast shadow), it drops very rapidly (almost 100-0) to shadow.
Well yeah, in general the closer you get to the terminator the faster the value changes.

Also consider a camera's exposure: if you have it open enough to see details on the shadow side, the light side becomes washed out.
But that's exactly one of the reasons photo refs can be bad, the eye is adaptive, you aren't supposed to replicate this effect in your art.

>This is how we know the Apollo 11 photos are fake btw
Oh, it's a conspiracy retard. Sorry, anon, you're probably too stupid to understand these things.

Tried doing a few more iterations, the top is just more of the same trying to see what looks good, the bottom is where I followed the directions you suggested. I don't know what it is but I still can't make something that looks impressive. There's still a bit of pillow shading going on, maybe my blending brush is also a bit too smudgy. It could be the lazy color use, maybe I just have to experiment with varying subtle hue variations around different body parts like that other anon suggested (though it seems like mixing any other color with green produces some very ugly colors). Could also just be that I have to zoom in and add more detail with a smaller bursh size to make it look good.
As for my actual painting brush, I started using an airbrush with a slightly hard edge. I like the aesthetic that hard edges have though, so your brush looks pretty nice to me. I'm using csp by the way, in case you've got advice for me on that front. Blending modes are those settings that you can set layers to, like overlay or multiply. Though I guess they don't matter when you're working on a single layer.

I don't know what your personal level with colour is, but if you feel like you're ready to go into the deep end go read Gurney's book on colour and light. There is a *lot* of information in there, but it is all useful. Even the stuff on physical paint mixing is useful to get a better idea on how to understand how colours work when you work in digital.

In your pic, the top one has highlights that are too strong and too white, and ambient rim lighting that's too strong. They demand too much attention, keep them subtle.

When mixing colours, don't underestimate greys. They are sleeper OP, and you can use them to work for you when you understand them. The eye can pick up very subtle differences in grey tones (Saturation between 0-10) and it does look amazing.

I would suggest going and looking at the works of Cyancapsule (fuller figures with nice shading/colours), Ataruman (subtle colour changes on the abs) , and Krenz (subtle greys + colours, Nurzhan Bekkaliyev shading)

Oh I thought you meant something else. But layer modes are the best. It's good to use them to understand how you can change the colours on your piece without impacting them directly. Use purple for shadows and setting it to multiply or overlay then using sliders to change the colour until it's pleasing to your eyes is good. Most of the time when I finish I'll add some subtle dodge layers with very very low values for nice effects, also When I'm done I usually add an overlay gradient of Yellow>red>purple>blue at at about 10% on the top to just shift the hues a tiny bit with pleasing effects.

>>4039602
My usual blending brush in SAI2. I don't know what it's called in PS, but just play around with brush settings and look at guides. It's important to spend time figuring out how to configure all the brushes to your needs. Cute Harpy Princess!

I think if there was one piece of advice I could give everyone on this board: "if you can't solve a problem, the problem starts where you aren't looking"

Every line you make is related to the other lines around it. Every colour is influenced by the colours around it. sometimes the point you can see that's incorrect is just the point where other errors meet. Thinking about things like that also helped me deal with some other problems in life.

For yours, the armpit looks off because some other adjustments needed to be made. The rib cage needs to be adjusted a bit, as well as the boobs to show the shape of the rib cage from the lower angle. Her hips should be a tiny bit fuller due to the low angle, and less of the nipples should be visible from the bottom, too.

Also, it looks like you've drawn the face from a higher angle than the rest of the body. Remember that the lower perspective can really change how the face behaves.

You're being angry for the sake of being angry. Are you seriously saying that heavy black shadows when someone is using inks is bad?
Seriously, imagine how much this guys life must suck to come into a draw thread to complain about people drawing. If you're a nicer person, then maybe you'll make some friends who will actually want to talk to you rather than that one person who sends you racist memes on discord who has a pepe icon.
Maybe if you paid a bit more attention in school you wouldn't be working your your shit job for pennies. Maybe if you didn't make that mistake with that one girl you were in a relationship with you would still be together and you might be happy. Stop taking your anger at your own life's mistakes on other people just having fun, spend the effort to change your own life and be a better person before you kill yourself in your room while you're drunk on cheap booze.

i think your values look nice but i really wish you'd turn down the opacity on the line art, it reads as dark value like ambient occlusion. Unless you're going for a stylized, line-arty look

Try making the water surrounding the hand brighter so the hand is more contrasted, the focal point gets lost in the thumbnail.
