IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You can do it anon, I believe in you

Just started getting into digital painting a few weeks ago after some years of photography and did this shitty sketch from another artist ref.

Is it even possible to get to a decent level just by copying from references/other artists ? I tried studying anatomy fundamentals and doing drawabox/etc but it just bores me unfortunately.

I put some stock in going to a figure drawing session or class and drawing from life. you can't just blindly copy things. in order to build your visual library, you need to start thinking about how things are like the shape of a neck, knowing what muscles are there let's you 'read' the refence better.

Seriously why is everyone on this board so retarded. What is it about drawing that makes people freak the fuck out and think that it doesn't follow the same logic as every other skill that someone could attempt to learn. Of course you're not going to draw something good on your first or even 100th try, that's why you're here, to learn and practice.

Think of doing art as an iterative process. It's normal not to get 100% bullseye right of the bat. You push and pull, you take a break and you push and pull again and inch yourself forward until you get to the point where you feel the satisfaction of an arbitrary conclusion. As you do so over and over you start to note your personal peculiarities on what you do the way you do badly, you correct them and so your skill floor moves up a bit and becomes your new starting point. And so until the end of days.

Third time I have had to rewrite this post because of Jewgle's kike Captcha. My fury is about at peak. That said, I likely won't be able to reply if I can even fucking post this.

For years, I have been a digital artist, a shit one, on and off. Often distracted or discouraged by how poor my art looks and how long it takes to make things. Skeletons and colorless outlines are a MASSIVE challenge. Frustrating enough that I will quit there and do something else.

I am not playing this as a pity card, but I suffer from actual autism. Having only used Windows XP Ms Paint, a mouse and nothing else for YEARS. I finally moved on to Paint.net and Photoshop. I tried a tablet, hated it, want to die. Change is very difficult for me.

I need help getting my spark back, I used to love making monsters and characters as a kid.In recent years due to the time it actually takes to TRY and use proper anatomy takes so goddamn long. PLEASE I need anything to cut down the time on making outlines and such. It's killing any enjoyment I get from this. In this little compilation is stuff from this last year. Any guides, links or advice is welcome even if I can't reply. Thanks ahead of time. Fuck Captcha.

Character is looking at an illuminated manuscript with harsh overhead sunlight. It's a panel from a webcomic, so it's supposed to be loose. I already spent too much time on it.

Perspective on the legs. Doesn’t look relaxed/slumped enough (i dont feel any weight). Also the deltoids look like shoulderpads. The clavical bone should connect to the top of the shoulder and the deltoid should sorta connect from that bone.

need some advice on pic related. I’ve been trying to exaggerate the cheek bones and parts around the eyes. I want to be able to draw simple faces with some interesting stuff going on, and I like those “edges” of the face.
But something feels off. I don’t know if it’s my foreshortening that’s not acute enough or something else.
Maybe it’s the whole structure idk.
It’s hard to balance having a believable form and doing fun stuff.

Really good face you got there Anon you got most of the wrinkles and formes placed well, not realistic but works well! I would lower the cheekbones slightly , in comics they are drawn to point towards the edge of the lips for simplicity's sake. Their centerthe outer edge is lower under the eyes. On thing I would add is that I think that the mouth is was too small on your version a bit feminine even. This can be a choice of style but I think it looked better with ha bit more wider and masculine mouth.

This board is also full of people who like the idea of being an artist, but don't want to put the work in, they just want attention and/or validation on social media. Others are just trying to scrape the bottom of the art market barrel making porn. Others want free porn, often of the "uncomfortable" type. And there are some who truly want to learn, and I try to help them.
As an aside, I really think this board needs to be split off - one for manga, the other for traditional art and techniques, because most of the arguing and issues is the two camps slapfighting.

Time to learn what cool and warm colors are. Skin isn't beige and black. And, the object closest to the viewer should be in focus, you're trying to emulate a photographic effect by blurring the book.

And, take a look at your values. Convert this to black and white. Look at the values. The sky is the most vibrant color in it, so it takes precedent in the eye - you're saying the sky is the most important thing to the viewer. And, the values of the face are disconnected from the hat, because the values are too jarring, and the values of the book are the same as the face, so they appear to be in the same plane in space, and fight for attention.

>Time to learn what cool and warm colors are. Skin isn't beige and black.
That is my attempt to do the cool and warm on the face, while respecting the colour of the light sources (atmospheric scattering and golden pages) and skin colour. I'd have added more red to the skin, but the skin is supposed to be pale. How should I have handled it?
I tried picking colours of shadowed skin from photographs. It was way too brown.
>you're trying to emulate a photographic effect by blurring
Shouldn't I? At least one digital artist I follow does it. And Marco Bucci advocates using different degrees of detail to direct the viewer's eyes.

I'm confused about drawing perfect squares, to use as a grid unit for my drawings. The books I read say you should place the standing point at a right angle from the vanishing points and place the diagonal vanishing point at 45º and use it to find the square depth. So would both of these be correct and why should I choose one over another? On Successful drawing Loomis says to just draw a first square and use its diagonal vanishing point for the others; so its the dpv arbitrary or there's a correct spot to place it?

The standing point represents the viewer. If your standing point in 6 inches below the horizon then your drawing is meant to be viewed 6 inches away from your face. Determine the first vanishing point, then the second vanishing point needs to be a 90 degree angle from the standing point. Then find the 45 degree angle and connect your standing point to the horizon line, draw a line from this point to the corner of your square. Now you have the two diagonal corners of your square.

I think you are meant to reuse the dvp for the other squares, not make a new one. And yes it matters where the sp is. In red I put extreme sps. One is extremely close to the horizen line meaning the veiwer is meant to have their eyes a centimeter from the page. The other is far to the left so the viewer is meant to look at the drawing with their peripheral vision. Both dont really make sense. The blue lines are roughly 30 degrees and create a cone of vision for your drawing, things outside of the cones really start to get warped. Most paintings and drawings have their sp 2x the height of the painting below the horizon line, so a 5 foot painting is meant to be viewed 10 feet away, a 12 inch drawing is meant to be viewed 24 inches away which is reasonable.

Watch videos by Erik Olson, I learned perspective from him.

no its not. its written about in many of the best scientific publications on the psychology of vision. Rudolf Arnheim, professor and author of Art and Visual Perception, used the art of ancient Egypt as the best example of symbol drawing. The eye is portrait because that is the clearest visual idea of an eye, but the face and feet are profile because that is the clearest visual idea of those parts of the body. that is the rationale of symbol drawing. you see it all the time in the art of primitives and especially the art of children, which Arnheim and many german gestalt psychologists took interest in.

Can someone please help me on line art? I draw digitally, but unless I do fast, swooping motions, my art is unsteady and shaky looking. So when I draw I spend so much time drawing, not getting a curve or line right, undoing, and repeating.

I have such a fear of like a “right” way to look professional that I spend far too much time on simple drawings. Like, should my lines always meet or is it okay to have them loose and varied?

I saw a guy named Tradd Moore whose work is so smooth and clean and I think mentally that’s what a pro comic artist should be, but I know it’s not the case.

I’m working on a comic and I’m driving myself nuts because I’m too afraid of taking a risk over something that’s probably in my head.

1. It's all just practice. Practice making circles, ellipses, straight lines and connect the dots.
2. As long as it is deliberate there is no "right" or "wrong". The only "wrong" is when you're trying to achieve something and don't (because of lack of skill) and you call it your style. If you enjoy one style over the other than draw that style. If not, see point 1.
3. Taking risks is good, but you also should be prepared to fail. If by risk you mean "post subpar content online" then it's not a risk. Be okay with it and move on. Otherwise you're never going to post or publish anything. See https://youtu.be/6BzCDVR-tr8?t=278

Good luck, anon.

for an 8 point object to be considered a box it must be described by two only metrics; height and width. a cube occurs when height = width. the lattice that connects these points must be 90 degrees orthogonal to each other. the 3 vanishing points you define for the box will decide on the relative dimensions required to be placed on your 2d canvas. >>3996613 is right.
