You still have depth perception because objects get smaller, lose focus, lines diverge into the vanishing point etc. I never understood "depth perception", but desu, I often don't see the "3D-ness" in 3D media either.

Almost every professional artist worth their salt will tell you how important drawing/painting from life is. Cherrypicking a few good artists that say they don't draw from life doesn't really change that its one of the common thread through all of the artists that could be considered masters.

Reference photos and models on a computer are good but its not a complete substitute for drawing things in nature as they actually are. A lot of things are lost in translation. Even 3d model on a computer screen is flattened the moment you stop turning it and just becomes a static image on a flat surface again, not a real sculpted object that actually goes back and comes forward towards us in space. Our eyes can tell the difference especially if a lot of overlapping and foreshortening in the sculpture.

One of the points of drawing from life then is to learn how to create a very dynamic and realistic amount of depth by emulating how your eyes see the world, not how it sees other flat images.
