The reason the original piece works and yours doesn't is because the one you posted is mostly fucking with perspective to get that effect and yours is just fucked.
It doesn't matter if you did it intentionally if you have no idea why the original artist did it this way to start with.
Emulation is good but try to understand why an artist messes with shit to start with instead of just copying without understanding. View it like a math problem, the end result means nothing all you should care about is how you get there.

Nose is too much to the left, his left eye (right for the viewer) is smaller than the other eye. Don't use pure blacks, I'd suggest decrease your value scale and focus more on constructing a symetric face, then play with values. Pic rel values could work for your drawing.

if from imagination, that's actually quite good.
if referenced, it sucks huge cock because you didn't actually pay attention to the linework you dummy.
so here's the final solution to your problemo: sketch what you want to ink properly before inking it. if you can't even sketch what you want to draw, you ain't drawing it. you are not at that level. in fact, nobody from master to amateur is. the number of great pieces/masterpieces that were created on a whim is the equivalent of a single atom in the entirety of the observable universe. everyone, masters and beggars alike, must start by outlining/brainstorming what they want to make. get your lines right until they are in the way you need/want them to be, then finalize your piece. otherwise you're just wasting a bunch of time finishing something that'll look bad anyway compared to someone who did take the time to get their lines right.

I also did sketch this out before inking it. But I guess my linework was so shit anyway that it didn't help. How exactly do I get my lines right and where are the most glaring problems? I know the right pectoral looks like shit and the right arm looks wonky. My friend told me that it looked to fleshy before so I tried to give it some edge so it looks less like he was whereing nothing. In the end I guess it came out just looking bad.

You keep doing them and feel slightly less and less like a failure each time.

Its probably the best form of studying other than drawing/painting directly from life.

Puts you into the mind of a master when it comes to things like choices in composition, perspective, values, color choice, idealized figures, texture, etc. Masters like Bougereau had all these things figured out to the highest level.

>how do you paint a master study and not feel like a total fucking failure?
>I've heard this is the highest form of study
You have provided part of the answer to your question. The other part is that you are not presently at a level where this study would benefit you. Your background is evidence enough of that. The lack of effort is quite apparent.

Master studies are typically idealistic. They are supremely well composed pieces of artwork that pay mind to every detail placed upon the canvas, but the overarching goal was to achieve something in the realm closest to perfection.

If you are not mentally ready to acknowledge the most minute of details and strive to capture them, then the study provides you with no benefit. It is not the finish project, but the process in having finished accurately and correctly that is valuable. Simply put, you are not putting in enough effort to gain any significant benefit from this study. Your figure's form is completely off and your understanding of values is basic. The overall composition is amateurish work. Any further investment of your time into this study is pointless.

You need to study your values, work on your lines and brushstrokes, and pay closer attention to/care more about your composition. I believe you made an honest effort, but it was not nearly your hardest.

>> No.3934611

>>3934561
Coming back and redoing the same master study a few months after is a pretty good way to spot progress. But doing a master study and really trying to delve into the whole process of a masterpiece will teach you the craft hands on, if you do your research that is, and not just blindly jump into such a large task.

Thank you everyone. Your comments highlighted that I was coming at this study all wrong. I came at it like I would try for a photo study, timed and a focus on things -generally- being in the right place, and a "if it feels close enough" attitude. Masters work should be more respected than that. They put much more thought and effort into every detail, I should be treating them with the same respect the had for their own craft. Next time I will be far more respectful with the art. Thank you all for your input. It really wasn't my hardest effort, and the piece (and Bouguereau himself) deserve that I do better.

This is one of the reasons I like this site. I am free to make an absolute embarrassment of myself, doing stupid shit like that, and have it not tarnish my name

Interesting ideas, but your fundamentals are really lacking.
Have you read about symbol drawing? Right now it's clear you don't quite get how the 3D shapes are supposed to be interacting with the lighting, the light source direction is not clear, light and shadow are distributed kinda randomly. That's making the painting look flat.

Also, colors and rendering are muddy. I think I know the rendering style you're going for, something like how Ruan Jia renders stuff sometimes where he punches rough looking brushes and weird colors on the canvas until they magically look coherent and beautiful, but without the previous knowledge of light and form it just makes your painting look messier. Focus on studying stuff like pic related, study faces and anatomy, how to properly block paint, all while you experiment doing your thing on the side, applying those studies to your art.
It seems like you're studying color, trying those opposite colors, balancing warm and cold, a few saturated spots here and there, but that's the last stuff to worry about, if you nail the basic stuff, you'll see these other things falling into place easier.

Use a bigger brush, your strokes are really messy. Learn to block in big shapes and then going for small details. You shouldn't have to go over the same spot a hundred times to make a solid circle.

How many attempts have you made? You can't just expect to copy the result of years, if not decades of experience by a master artist in one go. On top of that, you're attempting a masterwork by Bouguereau in oil, and translating it to digital, which is a challenge for even experienced digital artists - and a painting towards the end of his life, at the height of his skill.

The point of a master study is to get hands on experience figuring out how the artist solved problems and approached the painting, getting hints and insight into composition, color, and texture, even paint strokes if you're looking at it in person. (students often copy paintings in museums).

You're rushing towards the goal, without looking at the painting. You haven't accurately captured the form, and then compounded color and value errors on top of that. If you're not going to actually study the painting, and how it's constructed, starting with the form, what do you expect to accomplish?

This is above your skill level. Nothing wrong with admitting that - you need to understand the fundamentals of painting, color, and composition before you can start deconstructing what he did, and rebuilding it in your own version.

AT MOST, pick one part of it, like the face, and start there. Draw it accurately. Tru to figure out how to translate what he did with glazes and subtle brushwork, and pay attention to the hues, the values, and the lighting.. Bouguereau was an incredible painter, I've been lucky enough to see his stuff in person and see how subtle his work is close up. It's hard to detect paint strokes, and he worked LARGE. His colors are too subtle for photography.

Try something easier, or do studies of small sections. You're painting what you think is there, not what really is. Look at where her hand is near her face, and where the one you attempted is. Do you know how to measure? Because that looks like you didn't even try.

It's not surprising at all you're frustrated.

They're well made for sure - bright and colorful and created with care.

The only issue I can think of involves your intent. If you plan to sell these as assets for games, then you might get a few bites. However, I think these designs are actually pretty niche stylistically, and they wouldn't be appropriate for a lot of projects. I really think you could increase the sell-ability of these by including more "normal" designs. Ones like 'Petrolux', 'gonzo-color', 'Chiquita Meloncita' -- those are all pretty neutral and would fit nicely into a wide variety of different projects. Designs like 'Thicc Pancakes' and 'Pink Dolls Club' and 'Porkybat Burger' are really wacky and seemed to be appealing to a very narrow tone.

Maybe it'd be best to separate designs into 2 packs, one with more neutral, realistic brands and one with more wacky / fun ones.

Just a thought!

Sorry I took so long, hope you're still around.
The lines are all really wonky, lots of random placed lines of expression that don't help convey form, instead they just look like flaccid skin.
Very common marks of a beginner artist's style.

The reason I replied like an ass instead of an actual critique is because you didn't post anything to critique. It seems like you were just proud of the eyes you inked and wanted to show off, trying to hide the rest of the drawing.

Dude fix your resolution, I had to copy this into photoshop to see anything...

But Since I already had it in PS I removed the hat and scarf... maybe that helps you to identify why it looks weird... even if you stylize something there are just certain rules of anatomy which you should abide to so it still "feels" right... so basically get back to your head anatomy basics.

And as long as you need it, start drawing the figure without the clothing to really get the structure right.

I suck at shading and drawing realistic stuff but I did try to fix this, take this with a grain of salt. So here goes:
The animu eyes feel unnatural in such position - due to their size they feel a tad close together. Even with normal eyes the probably would be a little close-ish.
The nose is stuck somewhere in between being a proper nose and stylized sphere representing the nose. You should define the bottom more clearly and more defined alae of the nose might be a good idea too. Otherwise you might blend the alae and apex of the nose into single triangular-ish shape like disney do with their 3D cartoons.
Lips are a little too glossy, IMO. See Gwangtaeg Misul's work, he manages to make lips look glossy without smearing the white reflection all over them.

I want to draw the effect of light filtering through tree foliage, but the keywords I'm using on Google to find reference aren't helping. I did a rough sketch of what I mean on my current piece. Would anyone happen to have some references or websites handy?
