IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread: >>3925677

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

Watch as many YouTube tutorials as you can. I never found any books helpful. These are just blocked out. First is 1 point perspective. Similar to what scott Robertson often does but I've never read his books although he is emensly talented and you could probably learn a lot from him. 2nd is basically just a cube with bits and pieces cut out. If you remove it from one side you just go across and remove it from the other. 3rd is just side view. It's the easiest. Look into proportion. I can crank out 100 random side views in my sleep. Just try whatever until you get it right. Easiest way to learn colors is to make them and experiment with them until you get the right effect. Why do you think every artist's palette looks like a mess? Because even the masters take a few tries to get the right shading, skin tone, and/or texture.

Holy shit, I think I might be starting to get it. I kept in mind the last feedback I got (>>3927138) and gave Hampton's chapter on gesture another read (his book was the first one I tried to read but most of what he said went right above my head, and his construction and anatomy knowledge quickly scared me away).

After this second read I tried to incorporate his 'asymmetry', 'repetition' and 'timing' ideas on my drawings. I also made sure I was exaggerating important angles on the pose and drawing long curves following the 'movement' and not the contours. Something I believe he doesn't explicitly mention but I thought was important is the way he shows torsion: he combiness torsion with compression. I knew from Huston and gesture videos that one should identify the side that is streched and the one that is compressed, but Hampton's drawings blend torsion and compression into the same gesture/line, which I think looks really nice.

I warmed up with 2 min photos from Quickposes trying to transition from Huston's to Hampton's style and then this came out.

I didn't get an answer to my last question (>>3928239) but maybe it makes more sense to practice this way with timed poses. If I were to actually draw the figure I shouldn't be worrying about time, right? Does that makes sense?

Ok, let us analyze the eyes. I have noted some observations here.

Yours are slightly closer to each other but the 3rd eye distance between is relatively okay. Notably yours are missing a pupil and the iris is way smaller which gives her a more mature older look I thought this was intentional considering she looks older in general because of the more adult body compared to the usual child body of woomies. It is good that you shaded the white part fo the eye as well that can help. Yours has massive eye lashes.

The ref has 3 different highlights one from above one from below and one from the side it has a pupil and the iris very large, and the upper eyelid covers it slightly to make it look like in a more natural resting state. She doesn't have visible lashes to add to a more childish look.

I tried to find a middle ground between the two on the tp right.

Other stuff I would add, for shading use colors that tare similar to the base color like a bit more red for the skin instead of grey.

Did this help?

You should draw with whatever makes you want to draw. You can learn with any medium. With digital, though, it is very easy to fix mistakes, and then you don't have a record of the mistake you made to remember not to do it the next time. You just sort of have to do it. Part of advancing in a skill is engaging in tests and seeing where your current skill fails to meet your goal. You can sit and mope all day about being bad but that doesn't get you any closer to not being bad. Once you go out and make an attempt and fail you'll be able to see where you lack. The actual finding out though will require failure and then some critical thinking an analysis to find your gaps

For me it was hands. It was a total slog and didn't get it until I saw one in a book resting hands overlapped together, meatily resting. Before, I was bruteforcing trying to get exact hands right, making measurements, ratios, dimensions and stuff. But after seeing that artwork, I just gave myself the freedom to make obvious mistakes and enjoy the possibilities of how expressive hands can be. That is to say, I guess I moved away from structure and more to gesture.

That's the basic idea of drawing as a whole anyways - getting the idea and refining it in the limits of how you structure it.

Don't stress bro just keep on keepin on.
It looks bad because anatomy isn't right and you've tried dynamic poses you can't quite get and haven't really constructed for (that'll be the confidence) - but the best part is that you tried, and you're consistently and repetitively leaving a comfort zone. These aren't static boring poses, you created a scene.

Fewer steps sound difficult. Judging from past experiences my drawings come out deformed and fall apart if I don’t construct enough to establish the perspective and form. Does hurt the gesture that much? I guess it involves that mental construction thing. I know you feel bad about what you've done. And honestly it's understandable. You are a slut, and a dumb one at that. But everyone makes mistakes, and I'm here to fix yours anon.

I've studied virginity for 2 decades now peering into its eyes and gleaming into its soul. And as I concentrated on its idiosyncrasies it revealed its secret. Like Mikalangloos daveed, it is truly a piece of work which only the gods can hope to match.

Now anon, listen to me and understand that you must obey my instructions to the tee. Your virginity can be restored. IT IS NOT TOO LATE. I know, it seems ridiculous. It was ridiculous to me too when I first thought the idea and even moreso when I proved it. Here are my instructions:

At midnight tonight, use a amazon same-day-delivery rosary and stare into the moon. Look into its crevasses and let its light reflect upon you. You must chant an hymn to god and NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PENIS. This is a crucial step, touching your penis will render you blind and infertile. Far too many have strayed from the instructions and felt the crushing demise of circumstance. Do this every day for 4 years without relent and you shall be rewarded.

This is personally how I restored my foreskin and my sister her hymens. If you are a true man of god, you can do this twice over gaining an extra foreskin or hymen depending on preference.

Now anons, don't forget: NO HYMEN NO DIAMOND. Women MUST have their hymen intact before you court them. Have them verified at the vagina inspection center of your local kibutz.

Because organic shapes are much more forgiving. When you draw a car it has to be smooth and symmetrical and im guessing you have perspective issues too. When your brain sees a building it picks up on the right angles and parallel lines in a fraction of a second. If you draw those wrong its unbelievably obvious. If you draw one eye a little smaller than the other or the nose is a little crooked or the arms are a little too long, no alarm bells go off in your head because those could actually be real. It may not look exactly like the person but it still looks like a person. Have you ever seen an asymmetrical car though? Not unless it's been in an accident.

I like the design, but your art skills need improvement obviously. Start off by not having weird cut offs like at the arm. copying is rarely useful unless you are actively studying the underlying forms and committing their operations to memory. this is the entire purpose behind studying anything, to figure out how it works so you may replicate it and twist it to your will. there is nothing wrong with any avenue of study, just some will work better or worse for a given person, why not try for yourself and see which one feels more beneficial. I try to work primarily from imagination, and after i try my bestest, i see the abomination and look for its most glaring flaws. then i go to study these flaws so they don't get me as much next time. rinse and repeat.

Anatomy is something you study once your skill has already advanced as an artist, what you must not ignore as a beginner are the bodies basic proportions. Don't concern yourself with the muscles and stuff yet, get the length of the torso, limbs etc. in relation to the head right first.

Not sure if they are beg friendly so you might want to start with classics from the sticky.

I get that but I'm talking specifically animation in a cartoon style where anatomy and shading barely matter at all. I basically just want to do beavis and butthead style animation. I just want it to be slightly higher quality than something like this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow0xZG9XZ5w

Its been a long while since I did gesture but decided to do a Croquis Cafe vid on a 9 by 12 sketchpad with a HB charcoal pencil. These are examples of 1, 2 and 5 minutes respectively.

Am I going the right way about this? I want to know what I can work on.

if you're doing measured linear perspective work traditionally you should consider either getting a drafting table or studying in-picture perspective techniques (i.e diminishment guides). but a drawing like this would typically be something you do on another sheet of paper as a study and then translate it onto your actual piece. Frankly unless the work calls for extremely accurate mechanical perspective you'd usually just eyeball something like this. That is, once you have an eye for it.

Looks to me like you just added a random lump of meat on her right hip to balance out the overall silhouette of the figure. It doesn't seem to be symmetrical to the forms you used for her left hip at all. Nice gesture though, I like where it's going. I'd personally remove the extra lump to push out the silhouette of the pose even stronger but it should be bretty good to be processed now.

Hi. First post in forever and I’m trying to get back into it. It’s not finished but I’m curious as to whether or not this will provoke any thoughts. I am aware of the asymmetry of the face and the lack of shading, I will correct this before I finish it with charcoal

This is really awesome. The hashed shadows give this a lot of character. The mammoth has wonky perspective. So I guess in your next piece try and lay out what’s nearest and farthest away first. Also slightly relax the people’s posture, they look too on edge

Stick with 5 minutes and continue doing a few hundreds of those. Keep it loose, don't focus on details. Pay attention to the weight distribution of the subject. otherwise your gesture will look like it's floating in space.

I know this is not serious but you still made me smile, anon :)

I've been thinking about doing some sort of summary of what I've learned so far (hopefully other anons would find it helpful) to get some critique on my understanding of gesture drawing and as a way of keeping track of my progress, so maybe I'll do that one day.

I forgot to start with the simplest gesture for 1 min poses but here's today's stuff anyway.

I decided to take even more freedom on this session and for this reason some gestures look a bit bad, I'll try to pay more attention next time. Would like to get some feedback on whether I'm taking it too far or if it still looks right. I'm also worried about losing myself in stylization (not sure if that's the right word), I like this 'style' better since it feels more fluid, and I try to make sure each curve has meaning/purpose but sometimes think I might just be making some poor gesture look 'prettier'.

Did last pose twice because I wasn't sure I got it right the first time.

I'll keep exploring and fixing things to see how I feel most comfortable about the results. Comments and critiques are welcomed.

If I successfully make something dynamic/capture movement, will I be able to tell or no? It's my main goal right now to make things look more lively, but I'm afraid even when I will get it right that I won't be able to recognize because I was the one that actually drew it, if that makes sense

i hope you would be able to tell. drawing is arranging visual elements to produce an illusion of rhythms, if it doesn't work on you why would it work on others? for your fear; if you are unaware, then continue to be unaware, it is only when we become conscious of a problem may we look to correct it.

I've been drawing from imagination 'for fun' after taking a break from drawabox, since drawing 250 boxes isn't my idea of fun and I'm not learning shit from it
only thing here that isn't from imagination is the sword guy

if I want to learn basic construction, gesture and foreshortening what should I do, besides draw from reference? FWAP?
my art goals aren't anything lofty, all I'm looking to do is cartoon style stuff with a lot of color and creativity ala Moebius or Bagboss
also thinking of getting a tablet so I can deconstruct references and use them to make finished works as opposed to just sketches

Procreate is the best, and most popular.
You could also use medibang if you prefer a more pc like interface.
