I'm a mod on another site. I come here to relax, occasionally participate constructively but mostly to laugh at beg threads, which I think are hilarious. You don't really want the excessive moderation some folks are advocating here. It'll ruin the place worse than the shitposting. You want excessive moderation, go to that fucking anonsquak site that keeps bot-bombing 4chan. Enjoy being an aspie pedo. Yeah, a few things could be cleaned up, like too many redundant threads on the same shit. But excessive moderation here would kill the place. There are plenty of carefully moderated sites on the web already. If you really wanted a better place to yack about art you'd go there. But you can't because you're a misfit and can't adapt to a civil forum. So you're here. Enjoy the cozy bed you made for yourself.

2ch is filled to the brim with malicious advertising and data collection (which is ironic for an anonymous board). Moreover, you’ll get banned from posting after a couple posts, because apparently 2ch has a self-made browser that also harvests data, the majority of users use. If you wanna avoid this, you can pay money to be VIP, which lets you post from any region in the world. Any links posted on the site will automatically go through a redirect page, that once again, is loaded up with ads. Also, 2ch is in direct affiliation with some marketing and investment companies in Japan, as well as some shady publicity agencies who post content from there to spark controversy, etc...

There’s a lot of shady stuff, and it paints a good picture of what 4chan will be like given more time, under Hiro’s domain. That said, 2ch is powerful because people have no alternative.

Also, it’s incredibly insular and caters heavily to Japan’s far right. Unlike 4chan, where pretty much anyone can post, discussion on 2ch is far more restrictive in many ways. For example, only Japanese IP are allowed to post.

Now, I’m right wing myself, but as you read through posts, Japan’s far right is kinda retarded. And they have this really strange hatred of Koreans. It’s like /pol/ except more retarded, and with a more irrational superiority complex. Their News board, is 80% bitching about Koreans and how they’re so much better.

Idk, Japan is far behind its Asian neighbors in a number of ways, particularly in English too, so idk where they got off acting all high and mighty. There’s a lot of cognitive dissonance too. Like, they bitch about Japanese women being washed up cause of feminism and stuff, but they all wanna marry a white girl. It’s like, “do you NOT realize that stuff is much worse in the west?” Idk, reading through it feels like I’m looking at /pol/s younger brother (I know 2ch came first). It’s bizarre really.

I try to stay alive because there's this ingrained belief that life is somehow precious and things are not so bad after all and you can make it if you want to. This is just a fabrication. All I can aspire to is working in a supermarket or something, I don't want that, I want to make it as an artist. But since this is clearly impossible for me why the hell should I keep living? If you want critics / red lines, you will post on pixiv. There are tons of tutorial and amateur art teacher there. If you are a would-be professional artist, posting works on Pixiv will lead to business, too. If you want a job in video game industry, you will work at some company as internship or part timer and make connection there. If you want to be a manga artist, you will apply for assistant after graduating high school. This way you can learn skill and get paid. Anyway, 5ch/2chan is not suited for someone semi-seriously wants to get better at art. Those sites are for lonely people who would make fan art and circle jerk.

I think it's the typical "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" effect. In our art school, they teach western method of art such as plaster cast drawing. Students sketch ancient Greece figure and learn perspective etc. But there's barely any market for modern traditional painting and nobody knows what they are doing after graduation. In contrast, western paintings like Impressionist are still popular and overall people think the Renaissance art is supreme. But they stay minor hobbies and art works people actually buy are mostly traditional Japanese things. Such as Japanese painting a la style of Ukiyo-e or ceramic art.

I already get freelance work fairly regularly, enough to sustain myself in fact. However, my goal is to get picked up by a Japanese publisher, and get paid for my own original content, in the form of manga and whatnot. On the plus side, people I’ve met irl have said they’d pick up a manga made by me purely cause of the style and character designs alone. They say they’ve got a lot of appeal. However, one of the benefits of anonymous communities online is that they’re often very honest, which helps paint a very realistic picture of where you actually stand. I hope to make good use of them in the coming months before I start sending my work out to publishers and agents.

I'm not sure but naturally? All Japanese kids draw manga at least once in their lifetime. Some continue to draw all the time. Mostly copying favorite characters like Goku. Only a handful of them go on to art college. But they rarely become manga/anime artist. Those who pursue manga/anime carrier are all self taught. Normally, they are already good at manga style art in middle to high school. I don't think they follow authentic art tutorial like construction or anatomy. They just copy a lot. You get better through an extraordinary amount of copying. If there's talent for manga art, it must be a talent to copy all day without getting bored. One of my friends is a really good manga artist but he never does construction. Once I asked him how he got better. His answer is memorizing all the shapes of human body from any angle. If he can't draw something, for example a hand seen from a certain angle, he uses tracing paper and copy the shape. And repeat drawing the same shape for days until he memorizes the shape. Sounds really amateurish but it works. No rock star went to music college. They just one day grabbed a guitar and started singing without knowing how to read music score.

This is the biggest thing that makes western art look western and not like anime even when they try.
We make noses out of triangular 3d shapes, heads out of spheres, etc. It's a totally different frame of thinking

You mean the contest from last year yeah? Nah, we didn’t win. But I’ve been working on my art and cinematography since then, as well as learning the foundations of good storytelling (there’s a really good video series of college lectures on YT by the guy who wrote the Mistborn series btw). And my friend has been reading lots of manga, and working on his writing.

We’ve got three different one shots lined up to present, as well as outlines for the first few chapters of two different manga projects written up. And I also recently moved to Japan like 6 weeks ago. I’ve been making friends here, building connections, and learning the language and such.

My goal is to present some stuff to publishers by the end of the year, hoping to get a decent contract for both me and my friend. I’m looking into possibly contacting an Agency here to help negotiate for better deals. But well, priority number 1 right now is getting our products finalized and ready to present, and making sure they’re really good.

I can at least say with confidence that they’re all significantly better than what we entered into the contests last year.

At the very least though, living in Japan grants me the opportunity to keep knocking at the door of the industry while continuously improving my skills until something happens.

Nah, I already knew about Felipe Smith, but he doesn't really count in my mind. He never won any awards for Peepo Choo, hardly anyone really knows about him, both East and West, and he's not really recognized in the Manga Museum in Kyoto. Plenty of Westerners have been published in Japan, but hardly anyone knows about them. I think the significance in that is really that Japan is open to publishing work from foreigners, which is a definite plus. Respect for Felipe Smith and many others for showing it can be done.

But thus far, not a single westerner has reached large mainstream success in the Manga industry. How far you make it really comes down to the quality and raw appeal of your own work, as the opportunity to get published here is rather open. So that's what I'm aiming for. Getting published is the first step, but not what I would consider "making it." I wanna aim much higher than that.

I do have confidence in my talent, in my ideas, and my ability to create work that is genuinely appealing to many people. I just gotta keep refining my skills, and take the leap of faith when the time is right, and then keep pushing until it happens. So I just gotta work hard, and have a bit of luck.

This is the only thing I don't agree with in this post. I've seen and studied plenty of manga artist who use construction. Once you start mastering construction you don't even need to put down the constriction lines on paper, you can just imagine them and I believe that's what a lot of pros do; this looks discouraging to beginners because it seems as though they're not using construction at all. I'll also say that construction can be done in different ways, it can be used by taking simple shapes and combining them into more complex shapes, it can be drawing a simple gesture line and building on top of it, it can be guide lines making sure that everything is in the right place.

There are fucktons of indies willing and capable to hire any artist so long as you can make the assets they request, and most of them aren't tied to any style so you have freedom to bring your own flair. Also the movie industry is huge and they need art.
And if neither of those work theres always business art, or you can try shooting for architectural design. Fashion is also huge and there are often openings for designers if you have interesting work to submit; You just might have to suck a bit of dick to get in.

>No rock star went to music college
Provably false. You're right that most rock stars or most "Star" types didn't go to school but 99% of them did learn their fundies one way or another, on top of every member of their engineering or AV crew having learned their respective fundies

No. The people who have been grinding since diapers just have a headstart on you mechanically, but you have the advantage of being able to look on everyone else's mistakes and successes and steal every last method that they've used to succeed as well as developing your own. So long as you can use your position as an observer to your advantage you'll be fine but do keep in mind you'll have to grind hard to put your muscle memory where theirs is, which isn't a hard feat, just a part of the struggle.

I got sponsored for a work visa to work as an ALT. Teach English in Elementary schools basically. It's very similar to what I was already doing for work in Spain primarily, except way less stressful, and for far better pay.

The company I work for also helped all of us get set up, bank, rent, tax info, phone, etc... etc... So the only real issue was really more the money, our first pay doesn't come till the end of this month, so it's been a rather tight month and a half, but I've been able to adapt fairly well. Once I got decently set up I started working on commissions to make ends meet though, so that worked out alright. Only real issue with that was that I had less time to work on my own stuff in the afternoons, but it's been ok otherwise.

I dunno what else to say. I think one of the real good perks of working in Elementary school, outside of the enriching life experience it presents in and of itself, is the fact that I've been able to show some of my work to these kids (2 different schools too, so we're talking a sample size of nearly 1000 kids), and get some feedback on it. Which has been really validating, as they all love it. Onigiri and Nin-Nin especially have been popular, with many kids asking me to draw those characters for them specifically as they really liked them. Onigiri as well, his name got plenty of loud laughs from kids because of the pun in his name. So that's a definite plus, as that's my target audience. Again, it's been very validating. Kinda shows me that I'm on the right path with things. The raw appeal of the characters, particularly the two main characters of one of the projects, Onigiri and Nin-Nin has been something a lot of people have commented on very positively.

Once I get these commissions out of the way, I plan on jumping in and making some more art of those two, as I've got a very clean idea of where to improve my art in specifically.
