Animal farm wasn’t necessarily a critique of socialism/communism although American teachers almost always frame it that way.

It’s more a critique of the soviet dictatorship masquerading as socialism. It was a critique of totalitarian control and cult of personalities.

Orwell was a life long democratic socialist, he definitly believed that it worked, he just rightfully didn’t consider the USSR as actually socialist.

nazi’s as representation of Totalitarianism is pretty much keeping with the spirit of the book.
