I also dislike klasky csupo's style, but I have respect for the company since it was founded by a Hungarian refugee and his wife. The dude had to flee Hungary because he wanted to purchase/listen to Frank Zappa albums.
Once he got to America, he actually got to meet and become friends with his idol (Frank Zappa), and even befriended Matt Groening too.
While I still dislike his signature art style, anyone who built a successful company from nothing and got to be friends with Zappa has mad respect from me.

What is the american/western fascination with drawing things as ugly as humanly possible? It's not just cartoons, it's everything. late to the conversation, but ive always admired how western artists (especially cartoonists in the 20th century) could give their characters obviously "ugly" features without sacrificing the endearing quality or charm of the design. Giving a character a big nose, lopsided ears, a weird skull shape adds a layer of uniqueness, or even relatablity. Animation is a medium built for over-exaggeration and over-acting, therefore it feels natural when the characters in it look strange or odd.

now a lot of new shit (Big Mouth comes to mind most rapidly) seems to have forgotten the fact that you need to keep the appeal of the design intact and just made everything as horrifying as possible.

This. This style of anime, in fact, most anime after the 1990's, is garbage. Especially the way women are drawn. In the 80's and 90's, adult women looked like women, teenage girls looked like teenage girls, etc. Now all women, regardless of age, look like they're early high school aged, are all overly cutesy and act like little children.
