Of course. There are no super sekrit anime books either. Legit contemporary anime style is something that even many beginner Asians try and fail at.

The only way to learn anime is to observe anime, copy anime, do your own anime and then look at the goal. Correct until you've reached authenticity. It goes for all people but it's a bit harder for us since we didn't grow up in it.

No Loomis/Hampton/Robertson/Vilppu is going to make you draw anime, it's complete bullshit. Reaching an understanding of 3d and the planes of the face will, because when you have those you can simply slap the anime abstractions on your work. You can use Western fundies books or you can do it some other way. This thread is just insecure OP cope

>No Loomis/Hampton/Robertson/Vilppu is going to make you draw anime, it's complete bullshit.
Bit of a strawman anon, no one is saying they use those to learn anime. They do use the same material to improve; the construction and fundementals stand independent of style.
Even the jap learning material is just rehashes of the same concepts.
You say the exact same, so I'm unsure why you (assuming you're the same anon from other posts) are so offended by the claim.

Which ones? There are a bunch asking how 2 draw anime but that issue is not solved by this kind of shit thread. That's a problem with /ic/ being a small board board with seemingly significant turnover; full of underage and newfags in general. Newbies asking newbie questions and people not knowing what sage does (or simply not caring enough to use it). Sticky should have a big chapter dedicated to the anime question so we can ask new posters to follow that, not that it would completely solve the problem but still.

This thread will soon be dead and people will keep asking how to draw anime. Again, just an inferiority complex OP trying to pick a fight with the resident anime posters

Japanese in general don't know Scott Robertson. I am active on Japanese concept art related twitter circle, most people never heard of half to black etc. I feel like 99% of them come from illustration/ stylized background, they usually have great color sense and do stuff that we relate to Studio Ghibli- it looks great, and has that artsy look to it, not many people are into industrial design look. When they are shown it they are usually surprised by emphasis on perspective accuracy, I was called a "human CG" once, and I was asked multiple times if I use 3D software (because the idea of math approach to perspective and rendering is something they didn't come across before).

I never understood anime/manga artists. Their figure drawing is almost universally shit (stiff, flat, out of proportion, odd or incorrect musculature, etc), yet they're almost always great at perspective drawings, scenery, drapery, line quality, and stylistic flair. I don't know how japs so good at one aspect of drawing, but so shit at another, especially if they're using the same study sources as western comic book artist whose figure drawing is usually master level.

People tend to like this page

They're all pretty long, and it wouldn't be too hard to try to follow along just using the pictures, but like I said when you don't know what he's saying you miss a lot. There's a bunch of shit Loomis explains on the page that give insight into what he's trying to show you and common mistakes to avoid, heck sometimes the picture isn't even related to what he's explaining, so I can only imagine what all you'd miss by not being able to read any of this.

I can read it. Bought the one about heads.

I've only read the first chapter so I can't give a real review but I really like it so far. He introduces a very practical (imo) construction model along with anime heads at the very start. With just those tools I've been able to drastically speed up my heads/reduce the amount of noodling with <10 hours of practice, and the heads look less bad than in the past. Later in the book he goes into the individual parts of the heads and it looks really powerful, at least at a glance. I think that somebody who has some drawing experience should be able to make out a lot simply by looking at the diagrams in the first chapter and drawing along.

Read some complaints that his anime designs look old-fashioned and I agree in some cases but it doesn't matter since you can easily use more modern proportions/eye shapes/nose abstractions if you should feel like it. The author is super good at drawing too so that makes it a fun read in its own right.

Nice! Well maybeI’ll try just drawing along with it, I’ve got at least three of the books by him from an art book thread on here, so I’ve got a lot to work with.

I'm not really fluent enough to do it safely at this point. I might try to translate the first chapter later if nobody else does it, but no guarantees. Or maybe do some kind of summary picture of the first chapter. It'd be really good for the animefags if at least the first chapter was translated. That can't be too expensive if you were to hire a scanlation team either, it's just 32 pages or whatever.
