I wouldn't say its 'better', just not the same as pencil. For example, you can draw using any part of a charcoal stick. Pencils are limited to the graphite area, whereas charcoal can be used from any angle or position. It can be fun exploring a different range of marks and line, especially on a large sheet of paper.

Speaking of paper, plain cartridge or sugar paper is fine. However, Charcoal can be tough to use on smaller sheets, so size up to an A2 or A1 if you get the opportunity.

Charcoal is more expressive, and more suited for gestural studies, quick poses, and doing sketches on canvas for painting. It's got it's own uses, it's not a question of "better", more a question of intent and aesthetic.

And, it's much more delicate than pencil, as the charcoal doesn't adhere well, even to "toothy" papers (you want a very textured paper for charcoal), unless you use fixative. It can be very bold and expressive, and very delicate, depending on how you use it. Most figure drawing classes use it, on large paper, for it's expressive qualities, and being able to fill large areas much faster than with a pencil. It's also not shiny, if you build up a lot in darker areas, like pencils will get.

How do i learn figure drawings? Don't really even understand the concept. In the first drawing I just slowly tried copying the OP image. Then I looked through the thread and assumed if it was similar to gesture drawings where apparently you draw quickly with more confident lines, so I tried that in the second drawing.

I assume this is to help with form and anatomy and whatnot but is there a specific way I should go about drawing the image?

Started this during our last session at class. First time getting the gesture right on the first try so I'm happy with that.

Trying to get into regular, serious practice after doing art on and off for a few years. Where should I start?

the book I recommend the most for beginner is the Steve Huston book
But even if you do the book it may not enough
please try other video courses I posted here >>3824173. They may repeat the same point over and over but you get to see their drawing
and their take on the gesture figure so you can draw along with them for maximum gain
