IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3741154

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

Sticky: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

I'm no expert on gesture but it's important to not just draw the contours, draw the movement but keep it simple even if it's just a stick figure in the end.
Maybe try and draw the gesture with fewer lines.
Theres definitely people more qualified to give advice than me though but it's clear you're seeing the contours more than the movement.

Your perspective and proportions for what can be expected, is pretty damn solid. Your biggest problem forever is going to be your attempt to capture anatomy while a beginner
Stop drawing the anatomy like the bumps on the right arm and focus on either confident C-S-I gesture which you really need or simple forms like in you did in the lower chest. Most actually artist will tell you that and it's not a meme for people just starting. By limiting yourself to those you can tell much more easily what you are and are not capturing from the reference, making self critique easy and your ability to improve from a single drawing way better. Sure you don't get to attempt to draw the interesting parts of a human but trust me your retaining a lot less information than you think if you try to do gesture, forms and actual anatomy all at once.
If your adamant and comfortable about your current usage of energetic lines to find shapes and gestures thats fine, just use less with more confidence. Glenn Vilppu and "FORCE: Drawing Human Anatomy" as people to look towards would probably synergism well with you.

Proko is pic related and would be nice if your really look for minimal gesture, form, and line economy.

For a beginner there is obvious stuff to work on like facial structure and shading, but that can be fixed with practice and reading up on techniques for sketching.
Firstly I would get non lined paper to draw on, since at least in my experience drawing on notebook paper the lines always make me double take my proportions because I end up trying to measure everything by the lines, but even if thats not an issue for you drawing on lined paper makes art look generally worse.

All things in the world can almost certainly be broken down into shapes and forms like cubes and cylinders using different kinds of lines. Learning to recognize this is essential.
If you really have practically no drawing experience I suggest going to DrawABox and doing the all of lesson 1 because the homework is solid (Or any teacher that teaches cubes and cylinders) while reading beginner art books that are recommended here often and in the stick such as "Keys to Drawing"
Once you really understand that kind of stuff, doing stuff like in the video (which you shouldn't do right now) comes way easier and you will get into the rhythm of learning art and what works for you.

For starters, you should completely redraw that horse. It's far too fat at the front and it's neck and muzzle don't look right. The best looking animal you drew is the dog in the furthest upper left. Work on perspective as well. The cow looks like it's standing right next to the horse, so it just makes it look like it's tiny or another dog.

It's hard, but you still need to keep trying.

Copy the shapes as much as possible.

Draw the line from the top of the left shoulder to the right. Compare with the ref and see where you went wrong.

You exaggerated the bump on her left shoulder.

That trapezoidal shape her right arm makes with the body is different from how you rendered it. Check the line contributed by her upper torso.

The bottom of her right buttcheek should be more of a horizontal line than it is a diagonal like the one you drew. The reason for this is because the back of her leg folds with her butt, creating that almost horizontal line.

These are what stand out the most to me. At the very least, you got the spine line right, which is very important in figure drawing.

Don't blend pencils, if you dont have quality pencils the blending will be ugly and shite, but even if you do it's far more helpful to use hatching or just flat values to practice using shades to represent 3D planes.

All that being said it is important to do what you like and if you want to do it, I'd reccomend using blending stumps and erasers, I used to just roll up paper into a tight cone and use the tip. After that it's just practice with controlling the medium, there's no secret to it it's just experience and control

Blend it with a qtip, try shading spheres and other simple geometric shapes to learn how to do it. You might consider using some other than HB though, I work with HB and 2B only. This is how I got pic related. It's important to use the side of your pencil to get nice even spread of graphite and so that you have better control over your values.

Its seems like your values are a little all over the place, like for example the neck. Its like your not filling in the colors wholeheartedly, but just part of them. Try using a hard brush instead.

this is my first attempt at painting realism. I know everything but the face is REALLY lacking in effort, but that's mostly the result of me getting exhausted after working on the face for so long. I feel like the contrast needs to be increased but when I compare it to the ref the contrast looks the same, so I don't know how to fix that. I didn't color-pick but would that have been a good idea? I tend to do my exercises by having a reference open but than after I do the picture, I also make a traced second version just to not feel so disgusted with what I drew by not tracing

Am I actually learning something when I trace or is it just a crutch I should throw away

Overlay a drawing with its reference, see what's off and by how much. redraw it again. You're retarded if you think tracing will ever help with you anything other than wasting your time creating something that's not even yours.

You could do it to get a sense of contours, but there's also form which is incredibly important that you wan't learn by tracing.

Does anyone have any advice on creating more convincing face shapes? Even when I'm copying someone else my faces seem to come out narrow and flat.

Am I just not understanding the forms of the face properly? Is there some special way I can hone in on that, or does it just sort of happen over time?

More details, more shading. All that's left to do is do one or two more passes with 2B and 4B to get some darker colors. I've come across the realization that my scanner tends to brighten the image somewhat. I don't know if it's the scanner or the more reflective properties of graphite. Could be a combination of the two. Either way it happens.

Well done for finishing it Anon that's a hard picture choose there the perspective is showing on the left Pokemon but the right one could have smaller head to show she is that much higher. I can add that you could check the angle of forces that collide how the objects change their shape after the force of the collision is applied to them.

Then how the characters position their body to absorb the hit especially the one receiving the hit since the one creating the impact is colliding full force. Make him bend more towards the line of the force center of impact that is the focal point of the picture as he puts all his weight against it while his foot is supporting him against the hit.

Here is my attempt to add to it, I made him bend even more towards the line of action. Changed the hand but that might have been unnecessary I wanted him to balance himself or something. I changed the other one's arm a bit to make it a kung-fu pose, at the same i lines up with her line of action. Put her behind the foot of the other one to help the perspective. Finally added some random dust effects and lines of action to make it more epic. Like as he absorbs the hit it pushes him backwards on the ground so it digs up the soil.

It is cool, keep it up Anon!

Yeah, the impact isn't traveling to his back foot well enough. It might have been better if the back foot was just entirely in flexion behind him instead of abducted to the side so much.

I was trying to make it a point to go as off model as I needed to convey the action better, but it looks like I'm still shit with that.
Thank you for the help!

If you haven't done anything art in several years and never were good at art to begin with you won't be able to do this sort of shit. If you don't have to artistic ability to tell how an effect was created you probably can't recreate it yourself.

When he says you won't be able to do this sort of shit, he means right now/at the start. You won't have the skills you need until you've poured a LOT of time into learning the tricks of the trade.

I was being a bit overly aggressive in the wording I guess.
But, I don't take someone asking questions like this that seriously tho. If you haven't drawn since fucking middle school and think dudes on 4chan are going to be able to tell you how to recreate a painting in a post or two you probably aren't actually going to pursue art with any rigor.
