TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Okay so this isn’t great but it kinda shows my level I can consistently put out. I feel relatively comfortable with everything above the belt but as soon as I need to draw legs I have to step out of my comfort zone. If anyone could rip me up and tell me what I should do differently and some specific things to change I would really appreciate it. I sound like a dick saying it but if all you are gonna say is work on proportion, perspective, anatomy, etc you can save your time. I know those aren’t right but I already have that in mind. I need some less vague precise things to keep in mind as I hack this out. Again thanks in advance.

your proportions from the hairline to the chin are good. You made your female's face too square-jawed, a woman's jaw is typically more delicate and ellipsoidal than that. Also the distance from your ear to the front of your face is too long, so the entire head is too elongated looking from the side. The neck should be a little thinner from that perspective (have it end at about the middle of the chin)

Astounding and astonishing

Post his Donald Duck drawing

>> No.3734838

I'm looking for what could be the best anatomy starting course for someone with basic drawing experience but almost no anatomy drawing skills.

Let me be clear, my end goal is to be a better 3D character artist, but I'm not posting in /3/ because A), it's a cesspool of hate and stupid software arguments and B) I completely understand that I need a solid 2D knowledge base before transitioning to 3D anatomy.

I took some drawing and human figure in college a couple of years ago but so far all my jobs have been in some design field. I'm currently unemployed and after going through some personal shit I really want to get better at what I hope to be someday. So I have pretty much 100% time availabilty (while I'm not sending curriculums like a maniac) but no income to get formal education.

I'm looking for some specific course that could get me started, I know practice and Loomis are great helps but I need some sort of multi media guidance to help me learn. Altough I'm currently reading Drawing with the right side of the brain and doing the excersises religiously.

I'm looking mostly for stuff I can download from CGPeers and stuff. I'm thinking on downloading The Anatomy Workshop from Gnomon but I don't know if it's any good or if there's a better option I could look for, and with my download speeds I don't want to waste possibly weeks downloading something that isn't that good.

I know piracy isn't good. I actually bought Drawing with the right side and Fun with a Pencil with the last of my savings and compromising some of the food for this month, but I honestly don't know what else to do if I can't pay to study in my third-world country, but even if you don't believe me, I've made the promise that I will pay any of the courses I download.

So, which courses / books / artists / websites / DVD sets can you recomend me to learn anatomy (and possibly but not necesarily character design)?

5 minute figure drawing practice from a complete /beg/.
I think I'll 10 minutes instead next time. 5 minutes barely gives me time to draw the "action" of the pose, so I usually get bad proportions.
What are your thoughts on shorter vs. longer poses? What helps you improve the most? Is there a consensus?

>> No.3736430

Can't say I've done a huge amount of pose studies, but I think the general idea is to get a good action line for the pose then make things flow with it.

Some of your poses look a bit stiff. Try drawing a smooth line from the top of the head to the bottom of the leg/feet, then drawing the figure around it.

Mid-beginner, drawing mostly from eyes, traditional media. 2 questions will repost if there will be a need.

I want to rise to another level and improve at drawing stuff that isn't smooth but doesn't exactly have protruding features - ex, fur, carpets, jeans material, woods etc.

How do I make these things smooth and realistic?

Also during one of exercises I had to draw 10 times the same object from the same angle. I managed to mark the most important features and proportions in all 10 sketches, but I feel they weren't exactly the same. I really fear the "off-model". Besides sometimes we've got to redraw our stuff in bigger formats and it ends up being slightly different.

How do I get better at copying stuff or my own drawings in bigger detail than just general proportions, features and feel?

Who told you that you were suposed to draw everything in the book? Those are just examples.

If you are drawing a 3/4 view if the head. You would only be seeing one ear right? Drawing through means that you know exacly where the hidden ear would be. Like you were looking through glass or a transparent bottle.

Pretty Good work though 'symbol drawing' isn't a very helpful term once you're trying to improve. Alphonso Dunn recently did a video about drawing what you know and drawing what you see and drawing from imgaination requires a good grasp on both, because you see what looks appealing and what you like but you know what is wrong and right assuming your brain works and you understand the forms of what you're drawing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tzzuj_CgO5g

The upside down drawing is a good exercise for seeing better, but you still probably see symbols if you can't add a believable lighting scheme to your lil knight there. It's really good to practice observational drawing with shape (like what you're doing) and form (Like loomis).

I like to copy heinrich kley for form practice because he uses pretty clear blocky forms

Not a lot of people in /beg/ threads will feel too comfortable offering advice. I speak for myself of course, since I don't think I personally am good enough for that. Try to remember to just keep drawing, check the sticky out, and if you must ask for critique in a /beg/ thread try to be more clear about what you're looking for help in specifically at the moment instead of a general " help with everything/anything"

Try to work on linework more before trying to color and shade, you haven't nailed a 3D spacing or grasp of depth yet which you can't fake with shading or coloring at your level, which is what it looks like you went for

You really only need 3 shades to clearly define form. Shadow, midtone and highlights (no markings).
The form is messy; light appears to be coming from all directions yet none. Both sides of the nose can't be in shadow if directional light applied.
If light is coming straight from above, no shadows on the top part of the nose at all; should be cast shadow under it (like you've done with the chin).

Watch Proko's video on how to shade + any other lighting stuff.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to critique my art! You gave some really good advice, and I’ll check is out and re-do it. One of the problems was that the reference image I was using had weird lighting, and I tried kind of random ways to define the face more without thinking about if it made sense. That doesn’t in any way excuse the mistakes I made though, and I’m really glad that you helped me learn!

Murata's pencil sketches that he uses for underdrawing have enough action in them to make many people here consider suicide. He makes a simple frame with a ball and a man in basically empty space look cool cause he uses perspective, knows his forms by heart and knows where to exaggerate and stretch them.

I'm not the person you're talking with, but the whole thing you're doing feels off and bad. /ic/ loves construction and line based drawings, but heads are "organic". The circle is to help you, not to be mathematically drawn with a compass and have face added on top of it. People have proportions but also unique features, nose is skewed, eyes have different shapes etc. Additionally, your drawings feel 2D because they have lines indicating shapes that don't make much sense. I'm an ESL rambling but

TL;DR try to draw simpler stuff and don't think about loomis being a "recipe" for drawing.
It's hard to redline because the concept is flawed not proportions (that are weird btw).

OK, I'm that anon, again.
You're doing exactly the same thing. You're trying to do stuff out of order of learning that's why you fail. Try to draw loomis' funny heads or take an apple and try to draw it (better - do a study). That's how you should start learning, not by drawing these heads. You're completely missing all the points the author makes in the book.

Try to shade/fill the left one and see how it looks like an alien (spoiler: they all do).

>>3738434
>outline forms using construction
But you draw aliens not humans' faces. Try the funny faces Loomis writes about. You need basic observation skills first.

Draw apples without drawing a single circle till you'll understand.

I've been watching a lot of figure drawing lectures from Steve Hustons on NMA, and the majority of the lectures (at least the one I'm looking at atm) are on master studies. Ideally, what should I be getting out of these studies?

I can more or less understand the gesture line down the torso, and the rhythm from the head to torso, and even some of the construction itself, but how should I actually incorporate this stuff into practice? I'm still feeling pretty stuck and lost in the sense of progression, like it's not really coming together for me. Should I be trying to emulate their construction of the figure? Is this even restricted to old masters?

Also, should I just focus on a single part of the body before I decide to move onto the next, or should I try to get a shitty understanding of the entirety of the figure first? I'm sure there are lots of ways to go about it but my indecisiveness is making this more difficult than it seemingly needs to be.

Try defining the drawing more, give it more detail and effort. My answer would be pretty much like this >>3739073 Things are mostly into place ro resemble the human body but that's like saying the Cavemen paintings were fine. To see where your anatomy really stands, you need to go a mile further with it. But I can tell the left arm is too short, if you moved it down it would barely reach the hips.
Of course, with more definition, that lineart COULD be acomodated to be accurate if it was using fore-shortening but you're not quite there yet.

First stop using microsoft paint. Use sketchbook pro. it's free. Or is that a scan?

Second. Loomis does a poor job explaining this, but before anatomy you need to master the mannequin and be able to do poses in your mind. Do the easy manequin at page 45 first. If You can't then read below...

Before you can do the manequn you need to know how to move the primites shapes in your mind in perspective. Sphere, Cube, piramid and cilinder-. Specially the cubes and cilinders. As that's what the manequin is made of.

And before you add primitives you need to do basic gesture. Those stick figures loomis uses some pages earlier.

But before that you need to know basic perspective.

good luck!

For starters go to Quickpose and try to copy nude people from there. People use it for different purposes, what I did was set it to 1 or 2 minutes. And get the lineart of the people posing.
AFTER I finished with the 20 pics it randomly offers, I went back and finished drawing my favorite ones with no time limit. After the exercise finishes you can still see the pics so I went and put some more detail into some of them.

After doing the exercise two times, so that'd be 40 pictures of people, you should stop messing proportions since you'll have them engraved into your brain.

You also don't seem to know the stances and poses from which people kick - the body and especially shoulders are twisted too much to the right. Momentum should be going diagonally into the punching bag not trying to mess your own stance.

Fucked up and started drawing way too close to the edge which caused me to want to rotate the right hand.
I took a picture of my hand and used it as reference to get a better idea of how the bones of the hand and forearm might look like.
Outside of that there are plenty of glaring issues. Torso being too long and skinny, Ilium's shape being fucked up, femur being shorter, etc.
I started drawing from the head instead of the waist, and I got waaaaay too into the rib cage to the point where I fucked up the overall shape of it.

Look at pictures of real houses you want to emulate the style of and then try again. It looks like it was made by someone who saw a bunch of construction supplies for a house but hadnt actually seen a built house before. All the elements are there but it looks awkward and unfamiliar.

you need to measure. I was laughing real hard at how short the legs are and how long the arms are. But honestly the linework is real nice, it looks like measuring would fix 90% of this drawing. It could be worse.

Did you watch the Proko video on Loomis head? Go back and watch it, you should be able to catch your mistakes by understanding the method which is explained well on the video.

Then do a lot of those heads. After you have seen the Proko video which explain Loomis method pretty well - go and do the heads. You have drawn three heads (?) in couple of days. You should be drawing couple of heads in 10 minutes. Do 3/4, side profile and full frontal view heads completely mixed, go back and forth. Couple of each and then switch. Do like 20 heads per day for week and see if you have improved. If you feel you aren't improving then watch the Proko video once per day and really focus on what he is saying. Don't start a five hour journey through YouTube watching all the videos. One proper one is enough and then practice.

It's really difficult to tell someone to start thinking in 3D. I personally had a lot of gains when I started doing some character sculpts in zBrush, it immediately affected my drawing. It helps me very much thinking of clay when I draw. During a drawing when I push the orbital sockets for eyes and mold the brow ridge into existence, I constantly think of doing it with my thumbs/knife on a block of clay (mind you I have never actually experienced with real clay irl). I hope you get the 3D vibes from the picture I attached.

For others, this is a three hour lecture, but the actual interesting part is from the beginning to about an hour. This is a free NMA (New Masters Academy) lecture with Steve Huston. It's quite nice freebie. It is standalone video so you don't need any related material to watch it. There are no cliffhangers. The video can compliment Loomis method after you have learned it. I have never been fond of Loomis method and have only done some Loomis heads for fun, I have always approached portraiture a bit more painterly. However this is the vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg

I'd say get an idea of figure drawing first (proportions and gesture). Draw quite few figures, then after you got some gesture and decent proportions start the studies of individual parts.

"Most important" parts - or let's say the parts that make the whole body look off if done wrong are the shoulders and pelvis. So it's a good idea to start from those. But then go back and forth - draw every other drawing just focusing on connection parts of the body (shoulders and pelvis) or just the torso itself (get that bean shape) - but do roughly every other or every third drawing of the whole figure. This is how you apply the learned knowledge on your drawings.

Do a lot of hands and feet. Don't try to hide them in the beginning, if you have no clue how to do them, don't spend too much time on them on figure drawings, just imply their existence with boxes or some line, but after you start doing the individual studies, start drawing hands and feet as well. ALL DIFFERENT SIZES - drawing 1:1 hand is easy but applying very small hand to a figure is a challenge. Gesture and construction is very important there.

watch and study real anatomy. Like literally look at your face and try to understand how the jaw works, the eyes, look that your nose is not a simple straight line, etc. Also try this video it may help you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBv5z0Y2odE . Dont stop at loomis i mean loomis is perfect but you could learn other techniques and combine them
