What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

A couple things make it look lifeless up close.

The best way to add a bit more life would be to add some reflected light by the deepest shadows. Cast shadows also tend to grow more blurry the more distant they get from their source. Also consider places even less light than usual will reach, namely the armpit and inner thigh, directly below her groin. Since you were using one particular deepest tone, it's kind of hazy and blends with similarly dark areas. If you make those just a bit deeper, it will feel much more solid and volumetric. Think of how exponential curves apply to making things look round and use the same principle for shadows. Nice work on the shoulders. Although they're drawn asymmetrically, the shading is solid.

The hair also looks kind of flat, especially around the bangs. In addition to the other stuff in moderation, adding slight highlights can make it look much more round. That aside, the dark side is much brighter than the abdomen, for example. Since Rei's hair curves inward, you may wish to darken the bottom as well/instead. Consider where the hair is rooted and of what type to maintain order.

I highly recommend checking out Nekopuchi. That artist is one of the few I know of who also goes for a no-lines look and does it excellently. Keep in mind that Nekopuchi doesn't necessarily do what I've described so far, but still maintains a great sense of volume. Part of that is a healthy understanding of life drawing and probably photo references. Stay conscious of space.

For the eyes, you can make highlights look more glossy by putting them in their own layer, duplicating it, then blurring the one underneath and remerging the two. That way you can get a shiny look around the edge without losing its solidity. You'll also rarely see solid black eyelashes. Most Japanese artists will do some variation of making the center dark but loosely based on color of the hair or eyes, dark, but with highlights like in hair, and with the sides fade into a reddish-orange as they grow distant from the sclera. I haven't quite pinned down a solid pattern, but there are some artists, like Houtengeki, who use all three inconsistently, so it seems to be based on the type of lighting. So long as it's not one flat black shape it's okay, though.

It's kind of hard to tell the angels are lowering the crown on Rei's head like in the original because their hands are completely obscured and the crown is just low enough that you might think it's already supposed to be on her head. The similarities in the curves create tangents. The wristbands are usually also depicted closer to her wrist in official art.

As always, keep up the good work, anon. You don't want to turn into polished turd, though, so stay wary of symmetry problems like in the plug suit's design on the shoulders and beneath the breasts and the tangents in the crown. I'm pretty sure I've seen this composition before, but I can't put my finger on it. It would help a lot if you posted the original, especially to make sense of the weird anatomy and stiff pose.

not the guy but the head looks off. It looks like a lollipop, usually when you draw a body the shoulder should look like it can support the head with the same amount of balance where the head is attached to in which is the neck, in your drawing you failed to deliver good head anatomy so that it looks like a lollipop. Also the coloring that you are having is unequal for an instance when you compare the head to the body, the coloring seems off, yeah its latex but keep in mind that you could have do the coloring in the head part as the same with the angel wings. Cloud looks super realistic but the head looks animated, what a shame.

Fix the hand/wrist more and use more elegant strokes I guess.
The skull's molars have messed up perspective.
The far shoulder seems too far forward, mostly because the chest is sunken.
If that's supposed to be some kind of mask/headdress then you should make the entire skull larger.
The back of the cranium looks slightly too big with the angle that her head is looking at.

I think that the 2018 is more "correct", but the 2013 is more interesting to look at. The hair is all flowy with more gesture, the folds on her clothes are much more pronounced, the face is more expressive (because the feature are bigger). also the line work is more clear, more easy to read.

I would say that you need to exaggerate a little more, be more expressive, and change the brush.

this is just my opinion and i don't know your intention; but generally people find it more appealing to see tapering in the end of the line strokes. however your lines does not or too minimal to distinguish it. i suspect you don't have tablet pen or don't use pressure input. many people establish great artwork without tapering lines but i don't think your art is having it.

Alternatively if its the style about your stuff you hate grind some master studies. I studied and drew my art all year last year and saw the biggest jumps in skill in the periods after I grinned studies. Also come here and post those studies and we will help you with that too.

I'm not a fan of so much hashing for an entire style. It serves a purpose, but when every page is covered in hashes it kinda makes things look cluttered and messy, even when done right just because of how much you're overdoing it to set those tones.
Some people like it, but imo it makes things too hard to read when its done as a comic.
Large amounts of basic tones and negative space is really what comics thrive on, and hashing works for single things like a character on a white background, but if you threw in a bar or city scape with that style it would be a mess. .

I tried to scribble something together to give you an idea of some things that I thought may make it more interesting. Mainly just angling things away from the viewer, showing the feet so the char can maybe feel grounded (I struggle with this) and indicating some more anatomical landmarks, because the arms seem simple in a way that I thought seemed less suggestive of intentional style and more suggestive of dealing w/things you don't know style. If you like it hopefully you can figure out how to make the changes work for your style.
Also there's a lot of more western sexualized cartoon artists you could maybe check out, mickimatsu comes to mind as someone who stylizes heavily while maintaining some decent form, perspective and gesture etc -- the two aren't mutually exclusive at all. Good luck anon.

Maybe try something like this? They can still stare lovingly into each other's eyes but it makes more sense to the eye. It's like actor blocking, both actors usually don't stare right at each other. It'd be weird irl but in media its the best approach to show two characters

Hello im new here.
Tried to do a little demon/goblin character. Im still not sure on the body type so its only a face so far. So here are some questions:
-Are the colors too obnoxious?
-Should the background be a different color?
-Pupils or no pupils?
-Is there any way to make my drawings look "sharp" like this without disabling antialiasing?
-I like using flat colors, but it can be a little boring. I tried using gradient before but i cant use it well, it looks like a 2000s era flash cartoon when i use it. Is there any way to make the colors look "texture-y"?(idk if this is a word, i will elaborate on what i mean if it doesnt make sense)
-And finally; does it look good design-wise? How can i improve it?

My first attempt at coloring. I got bored of practicing line art, so I traced a pic to practice some coloring instead. Its actually not done (theres some shadow leaking and lots of bad lines), but I completely lost control of my layers so I gave up trying to fix it after spending half an hour looking for the nipple layer.

Digging it, a couple things to note though. The feet don’t really line up with the shins naturally, try the pose yourself. While your ankles can twist that way, it’s definetely not comfortable. The way the nostril is placed would make sense for either an upturned nose at the viewers eye level, or a normal one from above the eye level (seen from below). However she seems to be below the eye level, so for that to make sense her nose would have to be completely upturned

I think your comic could really benefit from the bold use of heavy black values on top of your existing lineart, to sell your style and bring your drawings to life by increasing the visual contrast and make the fine details have more impactful definitions.

Here's an animated gif for easy comparison.

Pick a brush with large max values but small minimum values (=a lot of line width variation), then the rest is up to pen pressure control and precision.

Do note that I don't brush up all the areas with thick lines, on larger areas I use very thin lines to mark up the area for the bucket tool instead.

Is it supposed to be a serious comic? I feel like the style works as a gag comic with the dumb faces, but it just looks stupid in an action scene which seems to be all you post.

The intent is about 80% serious, 20% mostly serious, if you get my meaning--so while it is by no means a gag, it is not meant to be total grim all the time. I personally enjoy making and looking at exaggerated expressions, but I think I know what you mean, and I truly am working on shoring up the goof. Just in this thread, some kind anon showed me a wonderful method of improvement that could dial down cartoonishness in favor of more disciplined grit.

As for why it's all action so far, I only get to make 2 pages a week, more or less, so for the past month I've been hammering out this one ~10 page fight scene. They take a while, but they are a fast read.

>> No.3755803

>>3755802
It being all action so far is fine, but the style just doesn't mesh with it. You be cartoony and serious to an extent but your style specifically isnt serious. And it's not just the faces, it's also their overall body language in scenes are just too overdone for a serious story and it looks goofy.

Plus the color palate really needs and update. The backgrounds are basically the same color as their outfits and it makes things extremely hard to see
The reason manga gets away with white on white is the black and grays contrast well with white background. Slightly dark gray on slightly darker gray doesnt.
