Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

the right one's proportions are off. The arms and shoulders are way to big, I get it is stylized cartoonish but still.

Keep these guidelines in mind, when standing straight the elbow almost matches the line of the bottom of the ribs. This does not change when the person takes up a different pose so try to keep them in mind as guidelines. Foreshortening and perspective can fuck with the measurements but try not to stray too far from them unless you know it.

The the widest point of the hips are located at the crotch where the vag is cause you know, child birthing needs to have the space. This does not change when the hips are tilted a person's legs must compensate fr the change of distance to the ground also tilts with the hip.

Finally the navel is generally around the upper part/top of the hip line. The navel position tends to change from person to person for various reason like gender, being fat or just genetics but generally if there is no sagging fat belly it is roughly there.

the bent forward head gives the impression that he/she is embarrassed or shy or something. This feels like a bit contradicting of someone who lives from evading the law. I would make him/her more cocky and confident that holds the head high to show the confidence.

The pose pushes to the left with the hand on the hip so I shifted his weight on the left side leg to balance it out and make him look stand more casually.

Also I changed the hand a bit, this is how I would balance something on my finger if my theory is connect and he is balancing a knife on it. If not then just go with what you originally had.

I had a chink rebranded tablet that had only 1 good thing: it was around 1 and half of a5 size. But generally it was inaccurate, 16:9 back when screens were 4:3 or 4:5 (mine was), required battery and had no buttons driving me mad as a left handed person and I hated drawing with it.

Now school forced me to have a term of PS drawing and I want to buy a tablet that'd be cheap in my 3rd world.

The choice is narrow:

Wacom One S CTL-471
Wacome One M
Wacom Intuos S CTL4100KN (these 2 cost the same amount)

Huion H640P
Huion H950P (almost twice as much)

Is it even possible to draw in the small space of 15x9?
>Also I'm poor so Huions are tempting, but I already had bad experiences with chinese devices. I also want them to work with win11 (if there will be one) and obscure apps like autodesk sketchbook or kirita or 3D modeling and other memes for weird people like me.

Honestly if you're gonna buy a wacom don't cheap out on it, and if you wanna cheap out just buy a huion.
I can tell you at least huion has worked with all the apps I've thrown at it and I've never had any problems with the drivers not picking up input (unlike the school wacom I had which regularly forgot that pressure sensitivity exists).

Anon, please plan your drawings before you commit to your details on this one the lines of the body is very much out of symmetry and the perspective. You did try to do the perspective at some places but you missed many other places. Keep an eye out for that. I also suggest you do some gesture practice for like 20-30 minutes doing a gesture in 1 minute or 90 seconds You can do this at the Quickposes website in the sticky, try to do it every day or every 2 days for a week or two and you will see improvement on how to draw a full standing body.

This is where skill comes to play anon. No, you do not need to draw everything in a square and rectangle if you draw maximum pixel perfect and accurate 3D humans. You are not a 3D engine and you are not suppose to be either.

You need to be able to approximate the body's part in perspective in a believable way. You need to know approximately how they change from different viewpoints.and use your mind to portray it in a believeable way. You do not need to measure everything you can eyeball it after enough practice, the basic plains however need to be in place for which the basic measurements will help you, once you get that down filling in the rest becomes easier.

The point of those lines is is to establish the basic perspective of the figure. They pick out a vanishing point somewhere based on how they want the figure to be positioned and then build the figure based upon that using their art knowledge.

They are dong this because different perspective give a different feeling to the observer. Perspective is used as a compositional too and storytelling tool in the comic books.
For example on this >>3687483

Magneto on he top left is showing looking downwards at the viewer which puts him above them which implies s a position of dominance: He is looking down and holds his hand out which further show a dominant position. He is drawn like this for a good reason, probably teh story is at point where he is the villain and has defeated the heroes.

Black Panther(I assume) on the right is crouching and looking upwards, which gives the viewer the feeling of him being unease, he is crouching so he is probably hiding and he is looking upwards instead of forwards meaning his attention is about looking around, probably he is worried about being seen.

Dr Strange (I guess), below is showing in forward and lengthened perspective. His face and hands are closer and his feel at far away which implies that he is flying or jumping towards something since he is floating, it gives the feeling of speed. He even holds his hand out so he wants to grab something maybe.

In all of these perspective is used as a compositional tool and storytelling too. It is to convey the intention of the picture, the story towards the viewer.

You can draw like that just keep the shapes in mind, make a sketch then take a break and then check the lines. then you can get into the refined details.

I know it feels like a chore to do the sketching and examination thing. We all just want to jump straight into the drawing and do everything at one go cause that is the fun part. But for that you need a hell lot of mileage. It is never a shame to plan and sketch.

Keep at it Anon!

So I'm thinking of buying a drawing tablet so I can practice drawing during break at work. (Got a good computer and everything.) I've tried learning how to draw some time ago for like 1-2 years but I never got anywhere so I'm pretty much a beginner in all aspects. My question is, which tablet should I go for? I don't want cutting edge technology but I'd also rather not buy the cheapest shit and get frustrated from using it and never touch the tablet again. From my own research, Wacom Intuos M seems like the best bang for my buck, but I'm wondering if it's worth doubling that money to get a Intuous Pro instead? Anyone used both to know if it'd be worth it for an amateur drawing for just 30-40 minutes a day? (The extra money does sting a bit which is why I'm asking, if I was rich I'd just go for the largest intuous pro.)

I am a fraud.
I draw hours and hours, and I love drawing so it's essentially a time warp anytime I pick up a pen to draw, and I never notice the time go by.
I am a fraud because I never learned shit, I brute force my way, so to speak, and repeat lines over and over until I draw a good line. If not for digital drawing, I would never cut it as an artist, because I couldn't be able to erase that often.
I have seen artists draw things almost on the first try every time and have a good grasp of the fundamentals but I just can't cut it. I can't even draw a circle.
If I spend 10 hours on some drawing it comes out " ok " and "decent" as in, matching the meager level of what a real artist may scribble on a napkin one drunken night with his opposite drawing hand.
I am trying to read loomis books and when he mentions spacing being the main trick to make shapes resemble real things, my heart ached because I feel like my brain understands it but my hands can't put it to paper. I love this hobby, I am passionate about it, but it pains me to draw, for I am forced to confront my failure as an artist with every stroke and every crooked, messy line my hand vomits out. Some buddies of mine are kindhearted and tell me it isn't that awful, but I can tell they know it's not good as much as I do. When a drawing comes out "ok", I consider it "getting lucky" and I can post it momentarily and then I delete it forever in shame of having created a disgusting wretch of a connection of lines. I know I am now a fraud and I wish to one day become less of a fraud.
Anyone else feel this way?

Head is too small and more round than model, face is scrunched together as a result. Nose is too stubby and shoulders are too broad and straight. The left side of the belt is too low and to the right creating a domino effect of making her back thinner, her ass lop-sided and left leg too thin at the knee.
Also you used a pen.

I'd recommend starting with a guideline of the body to measure it's proportions before beginning to add details, if you get the size wrong on one thing it can effect the balance of the entire drawing. You need to take your time with the foundation and build on to it, patience and precision is key and if you rush for the final product it's going to show.

Right upper arm and torso are both too short.
If you raise your arm above your head you can see that your upper arm is long enough to wrap your elbow over your head, meaning in this position her right arm would be further to the left and her body would be more slightly twisted towards us. Her belly is too short, making it look like her hips are connected to her ribs. People are typically pretty long, and your wrist should reach down to your private area.
Try to imagine the person you're drawing in different positions and you'll get the hang of it.
Pic for reference.

A good exercise in this is to open up a notepad and write down these questions and try to answer them yourself.

It's fine to ask questions on specifics but this is a very broad question and you need to be able to answer it yourself or you won't make it far.

>Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
That entire school of thought is a hack. It teaches the same ideas as normal art does but only teaches you to observe and copy what you see very carefully instead of understanding it. Plus the idea is from 1979, it has been long proven that the left and right brain sides do not work that way, they always work together (unless they are surgically separated) especially during careful observation, which this school of thought puts the emphasis on. Both sides of the brain are active even during the movement of either arms.

Your proportions are off. You left out his neck and the head is sticking directly out of the torso. Note where body parts are located in relation to other body parts. For example in your drawing the tip of the nearest ear is centered over the line where his front leg is sticking out. In the ref, the ear is totally past the point where that leg sticks out.

Another example is that in the ref his snout sticks out beyond the foremost paw. In your drawing, the paw is beyond the snout.

Always be comparing relative locations of body parts.

It's not like Loomis is a great teacher and his advice is pretty lame, but he's definitely showing you how he does it. It's fine and understandable if it doesn't work for you, but for him, he likes to teach by comparing objects to other objects. This is how he figures out proportion, angles and perspective. He is also very visual, which is why he uses picture examples instead of just explaining it, but the idea is that you're supposed to figure out what he did to get there. It's a super backwards and difficult way to learn sometimes, but it's useful. Or just copy the pictures if you want to get into that headspace. At least that's how I use Loomis.

I can compare the phrase "just draw it" to driving. There are definite guidelines you follow, but you really don't get a feel for it until you do it. Just following guidelines isn't enough, it leaves you wary of challenges. If you're failing 25 times, figure out what you're doing wrong on your own. Nobody is going to hold your hand through this process, and by all means, they shouldn't. Just draw.

That's why he starts with big parts. Place the circle for the whole head, then place the lumps for the cheeks, chin, nose and so on. Only after you placed the big rough lumps you start focusing on them.

If you are really stuck on placing the features try something like this first:

Drawing skill isn't in the hand, it's in the eye. It doesn't matter what you draw as long as you can tell where you messed up and how to correct it. When you learn the proper technique you realize that how you draw anything is how you draw everything, and your goal should be to train your eyes to find the flaws before you call your work finished.
That being said, more complex things are better, but changing subjects and drawing new things stimulates your growth way more than perfecting one subject from one perspective. Grinding wont make you git gud, you have to actually learn something.

Are you working with a reference? Start by filling it with one midtone. Then add the shadows and highlights. When blocking in, you want to think in terms of large blocks and shapes of tone, rather than incremental small strokes. It's easier to work going from large block ins to blending and painting the smaller details. Think about how the lighting works, where there's shadow and highlights. Think about the form and planes of the figure.

The best bet anon is made of two parts
1) choose the direction of your light source(s) based on what emotion/mood you wish to convey.

2) Know the general geography of the face, where theer are bumps or crevices wht is forward was is back. For example obviously the nose is a big bump so it will have a lot o light ad shadow around it.

Combine your knowledge these two and find which parts of the face are in light and shadow. Pic I tried to show it but didn't shade the background.

For a good example check this vid on how much the light direction changes the look of the face

the principle of loomis is building 3 dimension shapes on top of 3 dimension shapes. it's to keep you in that train of logic - which is why he uses cartoony heads, as you're able to break reality and have fun with it, but also keep it simple.
if you want real anatomy study, I recommend looking elsewhere. if you're interested in heads and understand the 3d form, maybe give 'steve huston heads' a google search to learn how to properly construct.

Does anyone have any tips on values? I think something is wrong with me because I can't really tell most values apart. They look too similar. I've been squinting my eyes but I can only see it if there's a massive leap in value.

Hey guys, I just thought of something.

Don't you think it would be a great idea to draw dildos to practice form drawing?
It would help people get into drawing cylinders, showing their form while also getting creative and sexual at the same time.

What do you think of that idea?

FWIW I do believe everything he does is traditional. His name is Jeremy Collins, I found him because a couple Nat Geo photographers I follow are friends with him, I think he basically travels with them and draws where they go, e.g. https://www.instagram.com/p/BqKgroGhE2d/

Like what >>3689439 mentioned, you need to work a bit on your rendering and values. Pic related is an example to not make muddy strokes.

First portrait in years (first one ever not traced/grid-ed); self critiques:
- her right eye is not the correct angle
- bad shadow/light values (hair, neck)
- basically all hair (including eyelashes + actual hair) off, didn't really "block" out enough before details.

Any other things?

How do you draw a cube with 1 point perspective with the vanishing point above the cube? I read in the force book and it says that a square that has right angles can't show the side or top plane without being fake perspective. Is fake perspective bad? And if yes then how do I go about doing one point perspective cubes?

Give details on HOW to go about doing something instead of just "UH, do this because I said so" it helps nobody, or, you're trolling.
