Just posted it in the Nazi Girl request thread. I can't shrink it to 1k wide without slaughtering it because it's panoramic. Either way, the post went a little something like:

The goal was to emulate a high school kid's sketchbook, skill level and all. Along the way, I named the kid Kyle because of all the Nazi business and the annoyed Hitler that wound up filling the bottom left corner. Did him up a ballpoint style K and everything. Shit got weird tho.

Honestly, this entirely due to the fact that I never wanted to draw the image in the OP in the first place because it's boring as shit, but I just spent a few days building a whole slew of custom brushes in Procreate and I wanted to try them out. Overall, I think it looks pretty ok considering, and I definitely got away with an unfinished, bare minimum high school-tier chalk drawing with the Totally Banging the Teacher sticky note placement.

Anyway, six hours in Procreate on an old ipad with a Boxwave metal mesh tip stylus. Resized in Photoshop after the fact because it was drawn in 4k.

Gonna do a Link vs. Hinox fan-art with my versions of the characters. I like to do these quick clothing/proportions- sketches before I start working on the actual composition/illustration so I know who I'm posing when I'm doing the posing. Might even sculpt these guys before I get to my actual illustration. I really love the symmetry tool in the newer versions of PS. Really good for getting your ideas down quickly if you don't really need a good pose/render (these guys don't look really great but I got them done in about an hour so there's that).

Some more super quick shit. I won't be working over either of these sketches. Just trying to get an idea for the final image before I even start laying things down.

"A" would be a more intense scene where Link is dodging a hit from the Hinox. Don't really know about the background or posing though.

I prefer "B" where Link would be hiding behind some rocks and there's like a deserted, ancient Chinese/Japanese town in the background.

Both of these sketches are fucking hard to read. I'm re-he-heally not good at sketching but I like to get some ideas down before I start looking for reference.

How often do you flip your canvas? Seems to me you got a good grasp on 3D shapes, that eye socket rendering especially is beautiful, but... The underlying drawing is so awfully wonky.

His head is too big, just look at how tiny his hands are in comparison.

The face itself is really distorted as well. I mean, it's mostly fine if he was supposed to be ugly, but if you were going for a handsome Aragorn, his face is too flat, back of the head too short, and more importantly, the lower half of his face is too long. I could nitpick each feature, but I think you get it. Maybe practice these measurements more?
https://youtu.be/1EPNYWeEf1U

That part under his chin, were we supposed to be looking at him from bellow? Because the top of his head is visible, so it seems instead we are looking at him from the top, and he has a bit of a double chin growing.
The sword hilt is not aligned with the blade, and also the pommel is perfectly facing us while the rest of the sword is tilted.
About rendering, go easy on those edges on the cheekbones, that sharp transition from light to dark is making him look really old.

I think that's it, hope this was useful.

This is how I felt too. It's a cool scene, but it's a poor view of it. It's just kinda 'bleh'.

I feel like this entire thing would have been much more engaging if the perspective was from the ground (like ~1ft off the ground) and right behind the people, so that you were looking through the crowd up towards these large, harrowing bunny giants.

Making progress.

Tips to make the values pop a little more in the gray-scale layers?

>> No.3686358

>>3686318
Be a bit more daring in how you use light and dark. Also remember that when you have your values in a separate B/W layer it sort of kills the colours, so it's not optimal when painting. But it might still be good to figure things out,

>> No.3686381

you should think about color theory more. Where it's true you should stick to just a few colors, making sure there is contrast between elements is more important. right now you can't where her torso and the bike start and stop, and you can't see the boobs at all.

Thank you for the advice. My plan is that once the values and forms are brought out, I'd copy and paste the shadow and highlight layers, change their colors around, and adjust the modes/hues/saturation/etc. until I am satisfied with the outcome. I'm not quite sure what the best time to merge will be to begin going over it/livening the tones with screen and overlay layers, then adding the cast shadows/reflected light/etc. But I'll figure things out as I go.

Anything about this sketch that needs to be tweaked?

this is my practice drawing for upcoming small project; it's dedicated to my sister.
she recently requested me to draw something for her new house; which will be about the size of A2 paper. ( the drawing, not her house. )
she want me to draw it like this manner. the manner that i use daily for practicing drawing skill. i don't know how is it called though, similar to collage technique?
as shown, i'm planning to draw some soldiers; and foliage as a background; and some abstract objects and gibberish letters.
is there anything that would help me draw this particular subject better? any cool subject to draw? and/or general critiques for this image?
thank you in advance for your input anon.

a little dab will do ya, I use to use thick pastel like charcoals, and all i would do would lay down a little form where the darks where and you can smudge out all your greys from there.
But with color its experimenting with what happens when these colors mingle. Best thing is to make a sheet where you mix different colors and try to blend them together smoothly, and keep it as a reference, always have scrap paper to try something before you are stuck. .

>> No.3687454

>>3687405
You should probably ask your sister directly or if you want to surprise her people she might know about what subjects she may like, or what you have picked up about her while growing up.
You probably would like to focus on composition, which on that picture looks overall nice, maybe the bottom left guy is looking outside and nothing is blocking that trail, so for example you could move the word "RAPT" in between and redirect to another point in the image. Or add other elements.
I would personally add flat colors for more impact, without going overboard since your linework and inking is the main selling point but it would also draw attention strongly if you did. Try with muted colors or so.
About the image itself I would personally try to have a nice array of emotions or expressions unless you have a theme going on, if so stick to that. So don't just have them neutral or close to neutral, but it's personal view of mine. Some others could disagree on this, try to think what she may like again, or ask her how would she feel about doing this or that.

Really nice, The only thing i can say i'd change is your visual hierarchy. The girl's face in the middle is the first thing you see, then your eye goes right has to stop come back and then decided to go left or go down.
See how the bottom half makes a circle out of the different scenes, You want that kind of flow, got to tell people where to look and when.

>> No.3687601

>>3687467
I don't see it that way anon, not OP also, the figure at the right has their gun pointing to the next figure below, so do their hands, that's also a cue for guiding the view. Hands, face, feet, body orientation are pretty strongly ingrained in our psychology as visual cues of where to watch at. You may just focus more on faces than hands or feet, or the overall body direction.

So if you draw a circle and fill it with pixels, a clipping mask of that layer allows you to paint within those pixels and erase without affecting the original layer if that makes sense. You can find it on procreate by tapping the layer and selecting "clipping mask" and play with it. Good luck anon :)

yeah i know you'd be concerned about the subjects i chose. but surprisingly those images ( soldiers, foliage, knives, guns... ) are specifically chosen by my sister.
i agree on 'RAPT' problem; because that's what i have drawn lastly.
i'm adding red color and red color only... well maybe some gray here and there. we thought the same about this one.
about emotions... i personally like 'edgy' style, and so is my sister. but after i read your comment maybe adding some frowned or maybe roaring images might give it a better vibe.

>>3687465

great insight. but honestly everything in that drawing is in place without me actually considering about it. i just drew anything in anywhere where it was empty. ....maybe that's the exact reason why it lacks proper composition!
i do know the importance of composition but i knew it shallow. all i was thinking were the placement of objects and not the flow. i now must think about visual flow as you pointed out. and blurring image technique was not known to me. very nice approach i see.

You chose a relatively simple style, so there isn't anything particularly wrong with the coloring. I like how the subtle yellow tones pull it together. It could be more interesting, though. As it is, it's pretty cut and dry.
I think you should challenge yourself with a more elaborate rendering style, especially with more highlights/shadows/blending etc. to gauge your skills more accurately.

14k in Canada for a year. and I'm talking about a good college.

I feel like it's something to invest in if you're talented already, and you're seriously not going to ever stop painting/drawing. Go for it absolutely.

Take some advice, do a lot of research about schools. I went to college for a year when I was about 19 or 20 years old and studied illustration/fundamentals, and it was great, I learned so much and progressed like a wild fire, I was dedicated, inspired and so motivated to get good, and I manged to reach a level, some class mates often came to me for advice by the time the year was over. I was one of those kids that went to life drawing sessions everyday, day and night for the entire year.(how you spend your down time will determine your progression).

Alright now all that a side. When I went into college I was not prepared emotionally, I'm talking about I still didn't really know who I was
as a person and how I viewed myself and others. I was really shy, and my self esteem was in the garbage, I struggled with confidence and self respect, but still managed to pick up a few art buddies( female and male).

Final advice to anybody going to art college. Just make sure your ready. take it seriously. If you get depressed go talk to a counselor. don't go get drunk and isolate yourself.

Looks pretty good. Some of the proportions are a little funky- I feel like his neck is edging on too long, and it looks like those hips are going to be a bit small. I would look at the form of the stomach area a little more closely, too.
Also, you should try to draw the full form when studying like this, it helps you think about how everything connects and relates to each other.
Doesn't look bad though. It's pretty charming.

Try to make your lines more smooth and long, rather than piecemealing them together. It will help the drawing look more natural. You can zoom in on detailed areas (ex. when doing the face) if it helps you be more precise there and develop the smaller shapes more.

If you're doing the highlights with addition layers (it looks like you might be?) then that is to blame, addition blending mode is super hugh contrast by default. I would suggest using screen or just picking a moderate grey on a normal layer for midtones.
Try to communicate each object's local grey more. By that I mean make your light-colored objects look more light-colored, you are leaning dark. Block out values before blending and adding details.
Additionally, if I were you I would add some rim lighting or other reflected light to make the edges of the objects more clear. As it is they blend into the dark in a way that doesn't seem entirely intentional.

I watched "how to paint like a god" by Borodante and thought it'd be a good starting point, so I just followed his method: blocking silhouettes with a random brush, then zooming in a bit and refining, zooming a little more and refining, all on the same layer. I played a little with contrast at the end.

I wasnt very rigorous though, jumping between small and bigger brushes quite often, and started out without a clear idea of what i was gonna paint.

Also I had completely forgot about the smudge tool in previous trials so this time I abused it a little, while trying to keep clean edges where I could. It was a lot of fun but also tempted me to make everything messier than it should be.

A few tips for these types of ironically bad posts.
>try to think in terms of wrong geometries, not just feature wonkiness/misplacement.
>a lack of understanding of depth goes a long ways. If you're the type that started with a solid understanding of 3D, this will be harder for you to emulate.
>multiple confident lines is still confident lines, and even sometimes a shaky line is still confident. It's a dead giveaway especially if the 3D form is well established. Go for more line scultping/ chicken scratching.

And remember "It took me a lifetime to learn to draw like a child"

Most "moe-type" anime girls would have differently-styled eyebrows, for example. 1 thin line, or outlined thick, not 1 thick line of varying width. The shape also has some squiggles in it that are not typical.
The face shap also has some nuance that you don't usually see, etc. Maybe rounder, simpler shapes in general?
It's probably worth tracing some anime you like to get a feel for it.
