**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about about how you are studying.**

This is the place for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory to
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

May not be anime related complelty but figure construction is pissing me off. I've been at it for years and I'm at this close to just....ugh.

Every method I have tried doesn't work for me. New issues arise like "how do I trust the body, bending, foreshortening". I went through the nma library and every teacher has their own method but when it all comes down to it the same problems come up. I p8ck up one style only to drop another method for another method the next month and it just repeats itself. I angers me to no end. I found drawing figures as boxes work the best and has the best solutions, but I don't know why I can't just stick with one way of doing it.

>If you look at a real pair of lips, there's a bit that comes down a bit in a the centre.
nay, there's a rule in inking that when there's a compression of objects (like when a leg is pressed against buttocks or hand on a cheeck, etc.) you fade the line, so visually there's no confusion whether one object is in front of the other or pressed on top of it.
it's a pretty recent trend to apply it to closed mouths, since a closed mouth is just a line, one lip in front of the other just changed shape of the line.
however, when you fade it, you exagerate the compression, resulting in expressed nervousness of the character. it's more natural for the mouth to appear angular, as opposed to rounded, because lips are tightened (when feeling tense or nervous) but there are always exceptions to the rule and corners of the mouth are pressed against the cheecks when people smile, causing a darker shadow there, so it makes sense even on rounded mouths.

i tried with >>3670199. on the left i just did a study of the pic and in the right tried to make it look more "animu" changing some aspects of it.

You didn't try anything. Slow down, focus on one image, and draw it more than once. Stop doing this realism to anime thing; you're just going to end up with a horrible uncanny style. Pick anime or pick realism and copy it exactly with construction and basic shapes. Read Huston's book in the OP to get a good method for doing that.

I think the nasolabial fold and that your drawing has her mouth a bit more pursed makes her look disgusted rather than blankly staring.

>> No.3674707

>>3668245
few reasons
1. call less attention to the mouth by making it less pronounced as softer thinner lines don't stand out as much and a small mouth is attractive on an anime character unless used for comical effect.
2 basic line theory states that softer forms have lighter silhouettes and when lips are pressed together it forms a soft space that can be shown by a gap in the line detailing the shadow of the mouth.

not him but a construction line on a face like that will prolly actually just confuse him since that face didnt use construction to begin with if he was using a grid method maybe but you can see he really did try to construct a classic face on top of the assumed image which was not how the artist drew that and will cement poor understanding of construction later down the line.

your eyes are really uneven. try to match the roundness of her right with her left eye. you should draw lines across the face matching the tilt and the features should line up. her left eye feels really big, square, and thickly eyebrowed.

this is with mouse but two different tweaks in addition to your original picture. redraw the face more. the width is probably right how you have it but eye needs to translate up and shaped up to be more like the other eye.

1. base
2. add first level of shadow (color indicated by the heart)
3. use air brush to create a gradient for a second level of shadow
4. add a bright color to the pupil
5. highlight. something something high contrast
6. add in the reflected light. use soft eraser on the bottom of the reflected light
7. around the bottom add a color high in saturation and put it in the overlay layer mode
8. add in the shadow for the eye whites.
9. on the highlight layer, draw the reflection, duplicate layer, put it underneath, use Gaussian blur

2/2 add some sparkles or some shit on the eye something about enjoying the journey.

After you're so comfy with Loomis you should test yourself without using his method (ie sphere,) Then you should move on to figure drawing, and understand how the body is shape. Once done you make you're own model and go from there.

Been trying to study the contours of the tummy and the muscle and fat surrounding it around to the hip area, I find it a bit difficult to do studies off real models due to usually too much fat that makes the abdominal muscle not visible. Part of it is that the corners of the mouth are darker than the rest. You show an expression with just the corners. Most of anime is about implying details that aren't actually shown. They don't add detail to fabric or hair for example, your brain fills in the rest. Its no different for the mouth.

But that image is like the worst of both worlds. It's a lot of measurements to memorize for a mannequin that defines the human body so poorly.

You're right, her head is placed above the eye level and so it's only correct for things to be seen from a lower-point perspective. Meaning that we should see the underside of anything on her. Then again this looks like a screencap from the anime and not a fanart, and anime often have small mistakes like this (even if this is a close up shot and that things should be drawn with more efffort). An alternative answer would be that she's in the middle of a forward-moving motion, making her yellow thing lag behind in the air, but that's a bit unlikely seeing how her sidebangs are actually displaying signs of a backwards-motion, making that yellow stringbundle thing even more wrong.

How do I make my shit looks less digital in CSP?
I've experimented with textures in both brushes and as texture combine over the entire canvas but nothing looks right.
Texture combine over the entire screen is what I guess most good artists actually use, but when I try it myself it just doesn't look right, you can almost notice the tiles.
Textured brushes really varies on the resolution and size of the texture and it's hard to find something that feels realistic, paper-like. When I think I do, the result after coloring is pretty bad because the textures lineart has blank gaps in between the colors..
Is this even the right thread to ask about stuff like this? Feels like both /i/ and /ic/ doesn't care about mastering your software and tool workflow even though it's so important. I've been occasionally browsing both boards and I still can't believe I never saw a simple "CSP thread" or "Sai thread"

jesus no. learn the skeletal landmarks and then the average of 7.5 heads (from there you can analyze works you like, a lot of anime is more like 5-6 heads for girls and 2-3.5 for chibi shit). look at huston, vilppu, or hampton. this is why we tell you to learn drawing from life. you need to know the actual anatomical relationships before you can start fucking around with them successfully.

most anime anatomy resources are bastardized, much worse versions of easily available english resources. your picture is some complicated chinese thing that seems to be 7 heads.
