The crabs have done too much damage to this place if you guys see valid pieces of criticism as "crabbing". If you reread my original comment I'm saying the artist draws faces fine then proceeds to lose sense of proportion and fucks them up on revisions. And this is coming from experience. It's like looking at a slightly malformed face and your brain tries to normalize it. That's why sometimes its better to take breaks and see your painting with fresh eyes, to get rid of that.

How much of these concept art paintings are done with overlay colors and how much is painted directly with a color? I can't wrap my head around these moody digital paintings. Is it done with black and white underlay with colors painted on top of overlay layers, or just a sketch and then the colors applied directly on top. I know that ctrlPaint guy advocates a lot of 3D-model looking black and white underlays with colors added on transparent layers, but who knows?

I know how to approach an conceptual drawing of a character but these complex scenes overwhelm me. Thanks.

You can tell by how garbage the colors are in this that it was first done in b/w. It has that flat monochromatic look that is so unbelievably unappealing. I thought that pic in particular might be paint over 3D render.. Yeah I don't really like color overlays either. I'm more used to painting with traditional media like gouache and mixing the colors on the side and applying them straight on. However slowly transitioning to digital I really find myself liking monochromatic studies, I feel I can really define objects as 3D that way, but overlaying them with transparent color layers gives me quite bleak wash out results.

I don't know, maybe I'll report back after thousand value and color studies.

tape single sheets of paper to wall. Most of traditional easels are very vertical and it's healthy to stand and draw at eye level. It's exhausting at first but it took me long time to get used to standing in work (not art related tho lol).

Getting rusty is a pain in the ass but if you just draw and don't beat yourself up over it a lot of it will come back pretty quickly. It's like with other skills.

If I were you I would do mini refresher versions of those exercises (no more than 15-30 min) and also original drawings of your favorite subjects (why not try to combine them? I often start with beans and then turn them into anime girls). Even if this is not as good as raw minmaxing grind would be during optimal circumstances, it will probably be more fun and developing in the end since you'll spend less time procrastinating and losing focus because it's so boring.

I'm considering starting to draw! I'm someone who is like, stick figure level currently so I'm literally starting from scratch ;P
My question is basically: When I have to write a lot with a pen or pencil my hand cramps up really badly due to me having developed a habit from childhood of holding it incorrectly. It's exactly like pic related.
If/when I start drawing, should I correct this from the very beginning or just I start off holding it like I do already and then kind of phase it into holding it correctly? Try holding it parallel to the paper, with the tip of the pencil at or past your fingertips (pic related). You'd just be rotating the pencil and your hand. use your shoulder and elbow to draw (this takes practice), and try to draw on an upright surface or flat with a wide breadth around you. That should help to minimize cramping.

You can draw a perfect cube by projecting a top view which is the same technique architects have used traditionally to make perspective renderings. However, for the purposes of drawing figures this is a waste of time and I can assure you no one does it. It's eyeballed. If you're new and trying to plow through books because /ic/ told you to, think twice. There is nothing wrong with books if you can stand them but you can be wasting time if you're not reading to solve a certain problem that you have been able to define, or if you have too few hours on your back to understand what the book is really trying to say.

It's much easier to sit through a chapter on head construction if you've spent the evening drawing 100 heads from imagination. You will be full of questions that arose during the drawing session so now you have a context for the info dump in the book

you can kind of brute force your way through by drawing something for every section or page or whatever. ostensibly to make sure you're parsing the words into a practical understanding but really it's just to stop your eyes glazing over.

it's worth noting also that most books are shit. they're by and large put together by artists who just want to make some quick $$$, they're usually not very well thought out and you get more out of the wip sketches in them than the words.

and even the books that are put together with a lot of thought are often aimed at reinforcing l'artistique fantasies for hobbyists, so they're a tiny bit of useful info with tons of jibber jabber... good example of that sort of thing is alla prima by schmid, very pretty book but if you learn to paint from it it's mainly by accident.

Flatten shit out as you go. Save a separate older version of the file if you're really paranoid about needing older layers. In that first image that main tree might start out as a single layer, then several new layers are added as detail is added, colors are glazed, etc. At some point you can flatten all those back down to 1 for the tree, then possibly 1 above it for new changes to it. Basically flatten each element as you become satisfied with it.

Now that I got through a couple artbooks and understand construction and the "theory" behind most of the human body, what should I do?
Just grind figures all day? Is that the best way to become good at drawing actual human beings? Can I pick up a comic or whatever has human with good proportions in it and re-draw them, too?
What's the best way to progress for me now?

Become their friend. Required you to have some skill and social ability though. I have this one Twitter mutual who I helped out when she was staring out on Twitter and now she has twice my followers but she still retweets everything I post. I get a big boost every time she does.

Could someone help me please? I don't know if it is me or the written part of Bridgmans book have things that doesn't make much sense, but I've been studying that and there are things that I honestly cannot comprehend, for example, he says that the masses of the torso area is divided by the chest, abdomen ''or'' pelvis. How that makes sense when the pelvis is a different mass than the abdomen?

I don't know what you mean by "horror style" but you avoid edgelording by subtlety and being reserved. You show the werewolf about to strike, you don't show the werewolf ripping a women's face off with it's teeth.

Do you interact with them past your initial helping phase? Twitter algorithm will not show you to their feed if you haven't interacted recently. That's why I always leave a comment when I like and retweet my mutuals. If they like my comment or reply back that helps my stuff shownup more often in their feed.

Also, is your art actually good? My art is a bit better than hers so it wouldn't look out of place if she retweeted me. Whereas if my art was way below what she normally retweets she probably wouldn't.

Y-You're not supposed to draw from the wrist? I use a super old "Wacom Connect" I don't really know the size, but it doesn't seem that big. Should I be worried?

Has any experienced massive loss of motivation to draw after finishing a really fucking good piece?

It's honestly the best looking thing I've ever completed. It took me about a week to finish and I learned a lot of small stuff along the way.

That was two weeks ago and since then I've just had zero motivation to draw or practice. Not even feeling bad about it. Just a bit concerned, its like I think I reached my goal and dont want to draw anymore...but thats not where I want to be. I'm not sure I even understand myself.

also, how do these cucumber tiddies work?

I used to draw flat until I tried angled. God its so much better on my back.

If you draw on an iPad pro I recommend the Elevation Lab DraftTable. It's a little pricey but made of metal and has tons of adjustment.

Aside from using a computer mouse I don't use my hand that often. But when I'm trying to draw or even write my hand hurts like hell. Is it because my hand is weak from not doing those things since I finished school years ago?

It's really only the right two everything else seems to be an intentional choice in style.
They are facing left while the others are facing right or straight, my guess would be that that is the the issue many people have, where they can draw faces facing one direction but have difficulty with proportions when facing the opposite direction.
Since in the video he didn't seem to flip the image to check for such a problem, he might be unaware of the issue.
Given that there seems to be a lot envy in this thread, pretty pathetic stuff.
