Good morning, dads.

(ibcah way better now! Keep it up.)

Would love to see some more drawings from you instead of painting practice one of these days. You already have a fairly decent understanding of light when drawing from reference. Slowly expanding your arsenal by exploring stuff like drawing and perspective could help, I think. In your most recent study the perspective was quite off and your values in the back were a bit too dark in comparison to the figures. Starting your drawings a bit earlier will also ensure you don't stress out about deadlines at the last minute. I think I''ll try doing some object and light studies because of you, thanks.

>Cannon

Study composition. Your characters are fun and whimsical, but the moment you put them in an environment everything feels flat and wonky. Look up your favourite artists and try to understand what it is about their paintings you like. You're already trying to include narrative in your drawings but push it more. Show us parts of the castle. Help us feel we're there by allowing the viewer to establish themselves in a scene by adding more objects, or textures on the walls etc. Think of your light sources. Study artists like Mike Mignola who are also very graphic but control the scene through the use of light and shadow.

(NEM those sketches are adorable, my heart.)

If you seriously have motivation issues, you could try the Nathan Fielder approach to achieving goals.
I.e., set an extremely embarrassing photo to be sent to someone you really care about to be sent in the event of your failure to complete a task within a designated period of time. Like a photo of you jacking off being sent to your mother. Or a picture of you holding up a sign that's covered with racial obscenities being sent to your boss.

good morning/evening daddies!
trouble falling asleep so please forgive some incredibly sleep deprived thoughts and comments.

>PQ
nice heads! the faces could be a little less sloppy if the spheres and guidelines you based them off were drawn with a little more care.

>all head challenge peeps
honestly, props for making it this far! I can see the practice paying off already.

>awetos
seriously dig the color studies you've been doing. good eye picking out the different hues in white snow.

>meru
eyy karamatsu! that's a great expression. it's comfy to see pen and paper sketches like this. I did notice the lack of hands, haha - time for even more studies.

>KazooKD
solid line control practice, keep it up.

>Cath
the waste disposal is very thoughtful of you. the perspective does look a little whack, especially the block table - check whether your lines lead to the same vanishing points. your cylinders look just flattened, remember to make the curved ends of cylinders fully wrap around the circular form.

>Soubrette
cool knight, I like that even though the armour isn't crazy unique, the pose and little knuckle brace help give a sense of personality.

>Vusta
seems like a solemn mood, looking forward to hopefully seeing this sketch develop further.

>greencat
I like the combination of yellows and blueish/teals. just wanted to add that your explorations for the interior design challenges are coming together really well. is the interior of the lighthouse?

>tekkyJSKURT
your upper body muscles/anatomy look pretty solid. however, I think the proportions of the skull, and connection of the neck area (head to torso connection) are a little weak.

>Narf
dw, you can pick up your streak again! the curves and line art of the whale look great, but the colors are sort of boring - try push the hue shifts as you go from lights to mids and shadows.

>> No.3622222

>>3622221
>tabascoshrimp
nice pen sketching! I like how you've hatched the feathers. with the head, the cranium/top of the head is a little distorted (too tall/long vertically)

>j
sick stuff. reminds me of the interesting shapes formed by driftwood, I'd like to see it continued, but just more of this stuff in general would be pretty cool.

>Frog
looks like good perspective practice. judging by the way it connects to the A-6 door, the long diagonal line on the very bottom left seems to be going to a different vanishing point.

>CoinHero
I'm curious what's the story here. the camera angle is a bit boring, being dead-on, so I'm wondering if a different angle/composition could help tell a story and mood better.

>Peltingfury
your placement of facial features has improved noticeably, and feel more natural, since taking the heads challenge. I'm jealous.

>plapo
striking lighting scheme. good call on having the cheeks also fall into shadow instead of being illuminated, the face looks a lot better as a whole.

>Ornitorrinco
not much to say, love your lines, faces and expressions. I feel like you could add some adam's apples to those necks.

>Feilereht
I like how functional your invention is, would hold hands.

>steve_owo
cute sketches steve. I'd say to be a bit more careful of long necks and placing the eyes a tad too close together.

>Charl
not a bad composition, leads your eye in to the point of interest/factories, although executed a little haphazardly. try shading areas in a similar direction.

>sort
seems like a nice old doggo with attention paid to the direction of the fur. good job.

>USAUSA
even though I can't quite tell what's going on yet, I'm digging the overall piece and the saturated colours in the patch of light. hopefully adding more to the left half, as everything interesting so far is placed in the right half.

>salome
a pair of a pair of good looking legs. you managed to convey the reflective plasticky material of the red shoes, and the more matte cloth of the black thigh length ones, but I feel the knee area seems a little fuzzy/ill defined - this could've just been the ref though.

>nyorai
Gwendolyn is my queen. pretty eyes here! however, the way you've drawn, the neck seems to stiffly attach vertically from the torso to the head - if you google image the neck and spine, you'll find the neck curves up into the spine at a slight angle, perhaps try convey this more.

>professorSugoi
bloody gorgeous, alright. I still stand by the right version.

>Rakimora
would love to see more of the RPG character, glad to hear you've come that far since then. I can feel the weight and momentum in her(?) pose.

>Celestino
some very steady improvement in your black and white studies, even from just a few days ago! great to see larger, more economic brush work.

>Whitehand
not sure if this is an existing character, but has some interesting religious vibes. it could be the sort of unique anatomy of this particular character, but I do feel the ear placement is a little low, the cranium (top of head) is too small, and the chin too long. Check with a 3d model of the head at that angle on sketch fab perhaps?

>Panzer
damn, looks pretty intense already. good luck man!

>>3622225
>tipsypaipai
I love this a lot, although her ankles appear a little thick, and feet a bit big. I can tell this is something done relatively quick as an exercise though.

>51ip
totally dig the gesture of the figure, I can tell you pushed the pose. somehow the head stands out a bit in comparison as stiff (to me), being relatively straight on.

>Jason
eyy is that Terry? I like the curves of the horse/animal, but the figures are very static, would be good to focus on gesture a bit more!

>Mariafire295
hm, I like this! the colours and simplicity are pretty appealing to me.

>ihatemyselfandneedtodraw
friggin sweet figures and lines, with the directions in the paint strokes and all. I wanna see s'more full/completed figures.

>Menes
your care with the hatching shows, v neat work on the shadows on the leaves.

"Many people believe that overcoming procrastination is simple: just work harder. The implication is that procrastinators are simply people who aren't working hard enough or who don't have a system in place that helps them to work hard enough. ww3's been up for 116 days now, and I think I'll take it down soon. As I said in the beginning, it was just an experiment, and I think it has run its course. The concept lacks some "oumph" factor to make it interesting. Right now I can see it just grinding to a halt, I think it's become boring and will only get more boring as time passes. Simply gaining territories based on quantitative work doesn't merit anything interesting to happen (except nuke on qt's). I wanted there to be some sort of strategy involved when it was made active with player actions, but the only strat is just turtling your way across the map not leaving thin passages. There's no counterplay, or play for that matter. The only thing ww3 right now is a task to look up the id's near you and an outdated representation and wrongly scaled image of who's active on dad. I wanted the game to be passive in the first place as to not be intrusive, but that's even less interesting.

Ty to everyone who's participated, and sorry to those of you who felt it lead to spam in the gallery. If you have any feedback on the concept and how it could be improved, I'm interested in hearing it.

Laravel and vue.js. The code's here: https://github.com/LarsWalter/ww3-lol
You can find most if not all of the actual logic for the importing, territory handling etc in app/Http/Controllers/InfoController.php. Along with the helper functions in app/Helpers/Helper.php.

All the front-end stuff for drawing the map etc is in resources/assets/js/components/Main.vue along with a separate background working for drawing the territories in resources/assets/workers/painter.js. Also a few helpers in resources/assets/js/helpers.js.

Feel free to ask questions, I usually lurk the threads anyways. GOod luck!

i would bet that you often work zoomed in and in sections. dont do that. make your canvas smaller or zoom out.
all of your subjects that have more than one major mass are wonky, and you use 5 lines for every needed one.
can i ask if youre literally tracing for practice? "tracing" or marking to find shapes and proportions is fine, but drawing on top of every line isnt going to help you.
i dare you to draw your next scene on some 600x600px without zooming in. gl pal

>>3622328
youre just wasting your time on those heads, buddy. apply what you learned from your studies of forms in perspective, and pay attention to how lopsided your forms are.
you also use 10 lines for every one (1) you actually need. slow down and think, and also lower your saturation when you paint.
i would challenge you to draw more ambitiously-- more extreme perspective, more masses in a single scene-- all while focusing on maintaining those forms correctly. figures may be a good challenge
i would say more but i honestly cant pin point your end goal. most of the stuff on your profile is quite scattered in terms of subject and style.

>>3622332

For more oomph, maybe you can make it so bigger attacks can be made than the 3 post maximum but not by just raising it. Maybe give the user a point for each full week they've posted on dad and they can use that point to take an extra territory or save as much as and for however long as they'de like for one massive attack after several weeks.

Thanks for the crit anon.
Also can you elaborate on more masses on a single scene? And what you mean by more ambitously do you have an example for that one?
You are also right when you say I do write about 10 lines for a single line needed and I have been using 80% saturation most of the time and should lower on that in future works. By figures do you mean gestures? Or a more realistic study?
I do not know if you can count this as an end goal but I just want to better than every /dad/ here in their specialties.

most of your posts (excluding the heads) have a single subject, so by multiple masses i meant that you should try drawing more than a single subject per POV i.e. two figures from the same perspective or multiple cars on the same street. drawing more complex scenes is all i meant by "ambitious."
by drawing the figure i broadly meant the human form since it is made of many simpler forms. drawing mannequins/simplified humans (pic rel) while maintaining both the minor forms and major human form in perspective would be great for you imo

If you're a hobbyist, take it easy and have fun with art. No reason to stress about it, you'll learn and improve with time. If you want to work professionally you need to figure out what field you want to go in and do everything you can to copy artists working in that field to a T while doing original work to add to your portfolio.

>> No.3622608

Well really there's only 3 styles of rendering to choose from:
Mobile game/cartoon/Mobage - Clash of clans

Photorealism/Bashing - Movies, AAA games (Assassin's creed and the like)

Everything in between - Indie games, small studios

Just pick a style you like and build a portfolio catering to that specific rendering style. Also note that your ideas are more important than skill level with concept art, I've heard.

Just found some time, most of the crit is based on the assumption that I worked zoomed in, which is wrong, you can tell by zooming into most of my paintings.
The 5 lines thing is only for sketches, which aren't for presentation and on which working loose is faster and more useful.
Tracing has definitely helped me improve, it's essentially a way to force observation.
>subjects that have more than one major mass are wonky
This is unusable.
If I had to self critique negatives only I would say faces are shit, paintings have almost no texture and colors are hit and miss.

>The 5 lines thing is only for sketches, which aren't for presentation and on which working loose is faster and more useful.
well im going to bring it up when the majority of your posts are sketches... even then its not a good excuse
i agree that "tracing" helps observation and while i wouldnt tell you to stop if its helping you, the reason i asked if you were literally going over every line is because its so inefficient. unless theres something obstructing the lines, youre doing nothing to make things clearer, and many times tracing will destroy the subtleties of the original lines.

It was very fun and motivated me to draw, but the quality of my submissions declined. I couldn't do any serious studies toward improving because I was rushing to put out 3 submissions a day.
I don't think, however, that it would be a healthy way to really improve even if you're a neet who can spend a fuck ton of time on submissions each day. It's kind of a shallow motivation and doesn't encourage you to think or anything. It's definitely better than no motivation, but it misses the essence of art I think.

That's not how it works. The arts are so ridiculously over-saturated anyways that the only way you'll get ahead, provided your a great artist, is through dumb-luck or connections. Fortunately crowd-funding seems to still be alive and kicking, but that well continues to dry-up because of the rampant abuse, and then connections will be continued to be emphasized over luck.

Depending on the job or studio you're applying for, with a quick search you should be able to find the kind of work they put out, or even better the artists who already work there. and to make it clear, there arnt "normals" every one in their tiers have the same quality and the "closer to" just means they have more hits than misses however with more hits you are likely to increase your quality which would put you in a higher tier.

usually a "hit" image i would regard is an image that has decent colors, readable composition(doesn't have to be dynamic with perspective or an overabundance of elements), good lines/strokes overall at least semi/finished state. with finished pieces i look at the overall technicality (brush dynamics(transparency/opaqueness)(softness/hardness))(complexity of resolution compressing the details or if its in full resolution the quality of the strokes(soft strokes/opaque/textured strokes not interesting with each other)

I don't have any specific videos in mind, but you can always find one of these speed paints in a style you like and slow it down to .25 (and mute it!). I've actually learned a lot this way.

art is a collection of skillsets, draftsmanship is one of them

value, composition, rendering, shape language, narrative/storytelling, (funtional and aesthetic) design, brush economy/markmaking, are some others.

good example is someone like dice tsutsumi, who has rather mediocre drawing ability, and isn't really a designer, but is one of the industries strongest colorists and painters. https://www.instagram.com/dicetsutsumi/

Don't get too hung on site streaks, you should take a break once in a while if you feel burned out. Drawing 6 days a week and taking a day off is still drawing consistently.

A low priority feature I considered was "weekend" and "business" modes for DAD. I.e., daily only on Friday - Sunday, or daily only on Monday - Friday.

good job daddy knights
after party with the prince/princesses will begin 6pm tonight in your imagination. That is all, thanks all who fought bravely. dismissed and see you all in the next challenges

>> No.3625769

>>3625760
Token system worked like such:
- When you start your streak you start with 1 token (it can only ever be 1 or 0).
- If you fail to submit one day, you lose that token.
- After 30 days you get your token back.
- If you fail to submit one day without a token, you are eliminated (your streak resets to 0).

Token basically acted as a safety net, intended to protect people from events beyond their control (fall down a flight of stairs, hit by a loomis van, city blackout, whatever basically extenuating circumstances).

In that way it's useful, it's also abusable since it effectively allows you to skip 12 days in a year (most notible example being the user "tripfag" that purposely used up their token every single month).

>> No.3625774

>>3625760

I wasn't thinking about tokens, but I did consider implementing a "vacation mode". I.e., if you posted up to a really high streak, you can choose to redeem a "vacation period" where your streak won't be broken.

Something like:
> 50 days can be redeemed for a day off
> 200 days can be redeemed for a week off
> 400 days can be redeemed for a month off

Of course, if you don't post, you don't advance during the seasonal challenges, but that's a given. Your DAD streak will be safe, is all.

There are also other metasystems that I've considered, but this is still in the brainstorm phase.

I disagree, to some extent.
I've already had several artists quit silently (manual account purge) because of the site's affiliation with 4chan. In fact, I actually abstained from giving my Github to recruiters due to that (and some revision history that had some extremely low-confidence comments in the news section of the site).
Regardless, people will find out that fact. And in the worst situation, a well known pro will learn this fact, take to Twitter, condemn it, and I might have mess of people raiding, DDoS-ing and/or generally fucking with the site in the name of some misplaced self-righteousness.

Banana is absolutely right. the 4chan affiliation is a problem. Though when I make it, I'll just start using my real name so it won't matter to me. Maybe someday you should consider cutting ties with 4chan and moving to discord only or even go through with adding a forum to the dad site?

> Maybe someday you should consider cutting ties with 4chan

Absolutely not. That would be a fundamental betrayal of my values. This concept was born from 4chan. I lurked on /ic/ while it was still a reasonably strong community, nearly a decade ago. Productivity bolstered by anonymity is a key part of LAS/DED/DAD's mission statement, where we can, in a social vacuum formed of like-minded people who are going through the same doubt, fear, ambition and excitement, start or continue our artistic journey.

I won't turn my back on something that meant a lot to me for the benefit of the ignorant internet population at large and their knee-jerk reactions, bolstered by an inability to take step back to look beneath the surface or judge things on their own merits.

It's fine. Sorry if I came off as a bit harsh.
It's just that, whenever I think about the state of the internet as it is, I get pretty heated. It's weird to go from the coziness of mid-era Newgrounds to this catastrophe we have now (the post-election era has killed most of my desire to browse anything, even 4chan at times). It's pretentious, but sometimes I did kind of have that "muh sekrit club" mentality when I reflect on what made those times feel good.
The technology and convenience has undoubtedly advanced, but something has gone horribly wrong with the zeitgeist.
