Understand what you are trying to draw

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

i can't read the poses from your drawings

you don't communicate where there is a stretch and where there is a contraction

Is loomis book worth it?. I am improving, but i dont think that i woul ever need to draw old man faces ever again

>> No.3593722

I have a problem of only doing basic box constructions and stopping there.
The motivation is gone the moment i get the pose/ idea down.

It made me realize i'm not really interesting in "Drawing" ie doing uber rendering etc but getting the ideas in my head out on paper.
An example idea is a scene of an alleyway with a girl being raped while people walk by but another guy is playing lookout/ staring down anyone a bit too curious.

Once i get the layout down and the construction for the characters i lose absolute interest in going further.

I wonder what changes can i make to have at least simply rendered characters without the basic construction, that way it looks somewhat okay and not a mass bunch of lines.

I don't even know why people even want to draw chinese cartoon characters because they look so fucking stupid.

People think that they can skip the anatomy by drawing them, but they need to realise that they NEED to know anatomy to draw any character, so they will continue to draw their chinese styled characters with pointy chins then pass it off and go watch some jewish propaganda on tv and call whatever show they watch an interest.

Very very true.

I see peoples drawings of little characters that they have drawn on advertisements or little leaflets advertising whatever it is that they are advertising and they always try to draw them in the jap style and they always never look right.

Why's that?
It's because they didn't put any effort into learning to draw and said to themselves "I know, I will draw it mango style because people associate greatness with japanese things, therefore I can pass this off as decent at the very least, without having to put much work in"

>>3595387
that's fine, you know. you can draw whatever makes you happy. thing is, i just happen to hate this recurring element in caricatures of just giving them a thin neck and that's supposed to somehow make them look more funny.
i've been drawing caricatures all through my school years and have gotten really good at it. i learned that one teacher still has that one caricature i drew of him hanging in his kitchen, even after ten years. i never did the straw-neck bs, though. with teachers, i had the chance of grasping what kind of face they pull, quite unconsciously, and i'd be trying to get that into the drawing, which ends up being the thing that defines them when other people look at the drawing.
a caricature isn't just copying a face from a photo and making the nose bigger or whatever. you still need to pin point some sort of essence of the person and that essence may not show in your family photo smile.

You should post what you mean. The straw neck emphasizes the blown up features. I don’t like to draw it because it messes with my learning and perception of anatomy. As far as the essences goes. i don't really care what proko teaches. what do you want me to elaborate on? I mean it the way I wrote it. to me, a caricature of a person can only work, if you have talked or seen that person in real life. the way they act, move, what faces they make when they talk, little quirks and peculiarities … that is how i want to approach a caricature. i find it very uninspiring to get a photo sent and a request of "drawing that photo as a caricature" of a person i have never met. even worse, if the photo is like a 550x900px identification card studio photo (happened to me exactly this way once). you wonder how stupid people can be.
all you can do at this point is exaggerate features superficially. you have never seen the behavior of that person and you can only scratch the surface. that's why a lot of caricatures end up being funny in the first second and then quickly become "meh" and you don't even want to look at them anymore.

Been trying to improve with a tablet that I own and SAI since I believe the only thing that will matter in the future is learning how to work digitally.

Anyway, I was told the best way to improve learning how to draw for beginners especially when working digitally is by drawing circles, lines, and cubes over and over again so that's what I've been doing for a while now. Is there a guide to begin learning how to draw around here? I admit, the reason why I want to learn how to draw is actually to learn how to animate.

"dress for the job you want, not for the job you have!" - i guess a hobo get-up is a good start for an artist?

you go to school, get thrown into a 20 to 30 people classroom. half of them (if you're lucky) are downright disagreable and you hate them, two or three are best friends. you graduate, get extra qualification and you face the same situation in your job: half of your co-workers are assholes. you hate your job or are indifferent to it. it pays the bills. you can afford a decent flat, you buy a bunch of stuff, you go on holidays once a year, you buy some more stuff, get into relationships on and off. and then, as your body gets weaker, as your hair turns grey and you feel like you've missed out on so much, you are allowed to retire. and then in your retirement, you are probably too weak to travel.

not for me. as an artist, you are an outcast. and that is a good thing. you work lots of odd jobs here and there and you move a lot. we need change and nothing's worse than working the same stupid job for years. the central thing in your life is creating art and being in that zone when you create. i'm fortunate enough to have a summerjob that pays the bills for a bit over half a year. i can do whatever i want after summer is over. but this is not leasure time or a long holiday. i make my art in that time, i travel, i look at the city i live in, i look at other cities, i draw, paint and sculp, whatever is needed.

I like drawing personality. I love every little sexy anatomy curve. Every bone, every muscle. Animals are a less interesting version of that. Backgrounds give atmosphere and context to the people. I can't stand drawing anything mechanical. Trying to learn lately for my projects that need them but drawing cars and mechs bores/frustrates me to tears. I don't get the type that can only draw mechanical things. When I get better will it at least be less frustrating to pour so much time on these kinds of things?

For the most part yes, but you need to get your forms correct first if you want it to look good.
If your shapes are ambiguous and difficult to read you're going to have a hard time applying any sort of lighting.

>> No.3597070

There is no precise placement. You just place to lumps where they feel more or less right and then make a face out of it. Different people have different faces so you just draw different people - high cheeks, low cheeks, thick, thin and so on.

Try to do it like in the book - take a colour pencil and draw geometric shapes and then try to transform them into a face with your normal pencil.
