Be patient. it takes time to improve

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

You guys starting to paint digitally should really just stick to hard edge full opacity brushes with no blending. Transparent brushes look messy when you don't know how to use them, and if you can't control hard edges you certainly can't control soft ones.

Well porn is one of the paths of least resistance. Basically you need to find something that you really like. For some it's porn, for others robots, landscape (or even tiles). then you get a couple of beginners books/articles about what you want to draw. Don't read them at once. Instead make a couple of your own pictures and only then check the book on how draw people who actually know what they are doing. Then steal some techniques from the book and try to improve your next drawing.

This is a trolling comment because you are saying that there is no point in the person to continue to draw "because it doesn't get any easier over time" if that's the case then why bother doing anything at all?

I got the cheapest one from Ikea and never looked back big reduction in lower backpain because I can adjust the height to whatever I want it to be at.
I always find my back sore when I go to stand to it, but that's because I sit more than I should and need to stretch out my hip flexors.

I would really recommend a standing desk as I wasn't drawing at ALL before I got because the desk that I was using was not at the correct height, was way too small to fit the television that I use as a monitor, then the drawing monitor in front of that followed by the keyboard sitting in front of that.

Try to do less restating lines/chicken scratching. Commit to a line instead of making a fumbled mess of short lines. It's like you just keep adding in the hope the right line is somewhere in there.
Concering the last sketch, give contour hatching/lines of the form a try instead of the straight line hatching-shading.

I have a problem of only doing basic box constructions and stopping there.
The motivation is gone the moment i get the pose/ idea down.

It made me realize i'm not really interesting in "Drawing" ie doing uber rendering etc but getting the ideas in my head out on paper.
An example idea is a scene of an alleyway with a girl being raped while people walk by but another guy is playing lookout/ staring down anyone a bit too curious.

Once i get the layout down and the construction for the characters i lose absolute interest in going further.

I wonder what changes can i make to have at least simply rendered characters without the basic construction, that way it looks somewhat okay and not a mass bunch of lines.

anon look at it. does it look like a hand? yeah it does, but theres a lot wrong with it. look at your reference and then look at your art. a lot of the lines aren't done well, you could add in a ton more detail since theres so many more lines on your hand than that, the general shapes could be made better. you just have to do it again anon. and then you have to do it again. and then again and again and again and you have to keep drawing other stuff on top of that until youve filled up your sketchbook with drawings and then you buy another one and fill it up. Everything is wrong with it anon, you did almost nothing right aside from just actually putting in the time to draw something.

I like the designs themselves.
I would recommend keeping the colors consistent within the design, that bright orange axe handle is really jarring when held by a pigman with desatured colors (same applies to the old man but not as much) and unless you want to create a highlight in your character where a certain color sticking out is the point of its color scheme I recommend using colors of similar saturation and hue.
Don't be afraid to give different colors for the same material on characters with different color schemes, so wood can be bright orange on saturated reddish characters and unsaturated brown on unsaturated character, even if the material is tinted slightly towards seemingly not fitting color it will still look natural within a design of certain color scheme.
I also feel like the shading to too bright and pillowy but that may be just me.

Try to improve your lines, add some thickness to them in shaded areas and where they connect instead of keeping them consistent everywhere.

Btw. you forgot to color the underside of goblin's cloth.

Though remember I'm also a newfag (>>3591302) at drawing and I most likely have no fucking idea what I'm talking about so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Also, a good way (or at least what I've been doing) is taking a color wheel, picking 2 or 3 main colors for your design and then cutting a triangle or rectangle (a slightly expanded straight line between two main colors) out of it depending on number of colors and then trying to limit yourself to the colors contained within the shape as much as possible.

This is looking great already. I like the hair. For arms, think of how the muscles and bones are pulling in directions and influencing each other. Think of the lean of shoulders. Is one behind and one in front? Maybe a hand is raised, pulling the shoulders, back, and chest up. Think of how that changes the contour. So much of drawing from imagination is just about keeping in mind everything about the physics of the forms in the scene.

Are you practicing gesture?
Are you comfortable with foreshortening?
Are you looking for inspiration and reference to do dynamic poses?

The first two are essential for your poses not to look static. While the construction of your torso and pelvis tells me you know how to use perspective, all of your limbs are set on the same flat "plane" at an equal distance from the camera, which essentially means your character is posing like a starfish. I think your pose also lacks a clear line of action - there's a weak double c-curve between the head, hips, and feet, and two arms that are unconvincingly pointed at random directions without anything else in the body's gesture indicating they are important.

Searching for reference is something all artists do. It is *crucial* for dynamic poses. Yes, even if you want to draw from imagination. The only way an artist will be able to draw a dynamic pose without reference is if they've studied and practiced drawing that pose before.

Also, either commit fully to your center of gravity, or commit fully to breaking it. Your character is either grounded or not. Your center of gravity is slightly back from your two legs but it's not clear if she's in motion, so it just looks like she'll topple back.

I just grabbed some random shit, it's not even the best, but look how that character has a clear arc going from her knee to her hand, and the arc actually goes in 3d. As the forearm angles away from the camera, we can situate the pose in a 3d space rather than have it constrained to a 2d plane, and this helps a lot with the dynamism.

It looks stiff to be honest. You can push the pose more. There's also little things off here too, like the belly button being too low, her right arm being in an awkward angle, but you should tackle gestures and studying from references (both real and anime) in order to get a feel or a clue how to deconstruct it to be aesthetically pleasing.

Also when i just get a ref and draw from it. it will turn out looking stiffer than usual. I guess I just need to keep studying from ref? I really don't get how tho.

>>3591682
I used to do gesture drawings. I'll be honest i don't understand most of what you said. I just draw from imagination. the most construction i do is like a little upside down u for the chest and a weird bean for the hips. I'll keep rereading what you said to hopefully make sense of it all. thank you for the input. Also how do i go about finding ref for a post i imagine? do i just look for parts that seem right like maybe a arm holding up her weight and use that as ref for that part and just keep looking for bits and pieces of the whole image?

8 heads proportions are what the greeks did when they wanted to portray mythical humans. You know, larger than life human beings. Non existentant. 7 and a half is more realistic. Also, your construction is shit, or at least on the picture of the right. That's the worst part of /beg/.
Essentially you never get an answer unless you are so fucking terrible it's easy to make fun of you or take pity on you.
When asking for opinions or tips barely anyone responds.

I don't really blame the people here, I think they main reason for this is that the thread for beginners contains mostly beginners so you don't really have as many people that know their shit or are willing to write a post about it to answer people's questions.

Obviously I'm not talking about every post, but most posts containing mediocre art barely get any answers to their questions.

Drawing makes me want to kill myself. Why do I keep making the mistake of trying to draw, when I know that I will never make it?

>> No.3592445

So I have a clue on how to do gesture. But my gorilla brain can't comprehend how to properly "fit" a drawing into a designated space. Like in Keys to Drawing they tell me to:
>make a mark on the top and bottom
>make a center mark
>loosely sketch in gesture
>make a correction midpoint

But I literally can't even make a half accurate initial sketch in gesture of the figure. The top half comes off crazy huge or too small.

Is this something I have to grind over and over or is there some sort of other supplement I can study to help me with this? I'm assuming any sort of construction skill would help but this just feels fucking rough

How do I into vertical lines? Is it really worth it practicing drawing at every angle when I could simply turn the paper? I'm just starting to draw, but I guess it'd depend on how far you are from what you're copying and if its 2D or an actual 3D object.
Look at pic related. Since your hand is so close to you while you're copying it (and, of course, is 3D), doing so without closing an eye would be a pain in the ass, since you'd be seeing two different perspectives of it at the same time. Now, if whatever 3D object you're copying is further away from you, I don't think it'd be necessary to close one eye.

hey /beg/ let me tell you a story of why never to do acid
>be 15, drew for 5 years straight at the time
>was pretty good at art, not a master but definitely not /beg/ tier
>really into art, wanted to design games or some shit
>brother (17) comes to me with acid
>decide fuck it, lets do acid
>immediately start getting psychosis, remember that schizophrenia runs in my family
>acid "tells" me that art is worthless and to focus on spirituality
>end up giving up art, taking up magick, tarot, runes, whatever
>after 4 months of this, snap out of psychosis and start to normalize
>don't pick back up art until 3 years later
>try to pick up art several times in those 3 years but always go back to thinking that art is worthless
>fast forward to now and I cant even draw a simple face

Thanks for the compliment anon!
>Non flesh coloured bow tie.
Noted, I already got criticism on it that it looks like three eggs, so I think I need to work on my cloth and drapery and what not, do you have more advice?

any advice of what to focus on, when i'm on the streets, how can i get better line value, its hard for me to settle on what passes as good enough for a caricature. i do these in about 10 mins.

>Try to do less restating lines/chicken scratching
I think this is a very important step for a beginner to make, and I think Nicolaides would agree, that before one can draw the form with certainty it has to be felt out, and restating is a good, albeit messy, way to practically gain a feeling for the form.
