you want to become an artist?
>years of building your art skills
>feel like you can start out as an artist
>make a checklist of what is needed
-
>finance art material
>in the meantime, work odd jobs
>self-manage your career
>layout and design your own catalogue for presentations, scholarships, open calls
>spend days refreshing, redesigning catalogues after a year
>spend more days preparing documents for scholarships
>need a shitload of connections to get into galleries
>try to cram time spent with family, with partner, work, time spent on your own art all into the week
>meanwhile research on materials, techniques, themes never ends
>gitting gud never ends either

"oh will you lookadat, yor an ardist, huh? well, i thenk you juss work-shy and lazy is all! you just be hangin around at home, munchin chips on the couch while us hard working people are out there working our asses off. yeah dats some kinda art alright!"

you're basically a startup business with one employee, if you decide to become a professional artist. why do people not understand this?

>> No.3589796

Being a professional artist is a bad meme. Get a job, achieve financial independence, do art as a hobby. You'll feel more creatively driven if you do it that way.

The inability to actively seek out new opportunities, reach out to art directors, share your portfolio to the right people, etc. is the #1 thing that separates unsuccessful artists (especially freelance illustrators) from the successful, thriving ones.

Quit expecting opportunity to knock on your inbox. Reach out to others and make you and your work known. It's really not that hard, but most people won't do it. When was the last time any of you reached out to an art / creative director?

I've been doing art as a career for a while and I still get this shit.

>work as a peasant, barely able to survive day to day
>steal whatever materials you can get
>draw at night by candle light
>barely master basic drawing skills
>beg a master to let you slave for them
>do this for years
>barely learn anything
>sabotage among your peers
>finally manage to clone your master's style
>still no patrons, barely able to get work
>work
>work
>maybe get patrons
>prolly not that successful
>die as an unknown that never amounted to anything but the escape of poverty

>>3589805
true, but it doesn't make it any easier. and i would disagree that it is so easy to find an art director or someone who is interested in your works.
worst is that most galleries will downright reject you, if you so naively come knocking with your portfolio and trying to just straight up ask them to take you in.

most art jobs are serious pleb shit. only the top tier stuff is worth doing. you're better off going into something like business/software, and learning to invest. then do art in your spare time/ after your early retirement. everyone always suggests this. you just don't like it cause you're too delusional about your expectation of a privileged life.

having this expectation of achievable dreams is a most modern capitalist invention. no one thought this way with such baseless entitlement throughout all of history. just being able to live long and not have a completely insufferable time doing it meant you were pretty well off.

being financially self independent is a meme tho.
youre alone 100% of the time, and its all about money, you dont just make money to make money. you need to spend it and to spend it means you must have goals. then after your goals are finished then what? whats next? youll be stuck on this loop, you will hardly be satisfied. in due time you will have it all but then you will die lonely, never amounting to anything, and a mediocre. go invest in some "stocks" youll just be left with money you dont even need.

what are you even talking about? retirement is a meme? ... what?

actually, you do make money to make money. that's what investing is all about, kid. you can also spend it but you're thinking about it wrong because you're prolly some third worlder peasant. there is no loop unless you consider eating and drinking to stay alive a loop, too. i don't even get how you can conflate being smart with money to being socially isolated. are you ok?

>> No.3589879

>>3589871
being self independent aka no wife, no kids. nothing to do with being socially isolated. starting a family is the only solid reason to earn money, invest in stocks ect because you are supporting your bloodline. if youre earning money just to earn money alone, then lmao whats its all for? just to satisfy your shitty little self independent material needs? yeah, enjoy your retirement alone buddy

God, I'm tired of you "art is a hobby" losers shitting up the board this week, where the fuck did you all even come from?

Creating art is a job. It's a skilled labor that many people are willing to pay for. Making a living as an artist is perfectly achievable goal, OP even lays it out. If you can't make good money off your art alone, either your art isn't good enough or you're not marketing yourself to the correct demographic. Fuck off this board already if you don't respect the anons pouring all their passion and time into this craft.
