Being a professional artist is a bad meme. Get a job, achieve financial independence, do art as a hobby. You'll feel more creatively driven if you do it that way.

The inability to actively seek out new opportunities, reach out to art directors, share your portfolio to the right people, etc. is the #1 thing that separates unsuccessful artists (especially freelance illustrators) from the successful, thriving ones.

Quit expecting opportunity to knock on your inbox. Reach out to others and make you and your work known. It's really not that hard, but most people won't do it. When was the last time any of you reached out to an art / creative director?

I've been doing art as a career for a while and I still get this shit.

worst is that most galleries will downright reject you, if you so naively come knocking with your portfolio and trying to just straight up ask them to take you in.

youre alone 100% of the time, and its all about money, you dont just make money to make money. you need to spend it and to spend it means you must have goals. then after your goals are finished then what? whats next? youll be stuck on this loop, you will hardly be satisfied. in due time you will have it all but then you will die lonely, never amounting to anything, and a mediocre. go invest in some "stocks" youll just be left with money you dont even need.

Creating art is a job. It's a skilled labor that many people are willing to pay for. Making a living as an artist is perfectly achievable goal, OP even lays it out. If you can't make good money off your art alone, either your art isn't good enough or you're not marketing yourself to the correct demographic. Fuck off this board already if you don't respect the anons pouring all their passion and time into this craft.
