I guess someone else will have to take up the duty of making draw threads since the old guy is gone. Also if you're reading this old draw thread guy, thanks for making all those threads lad.

your rendering sucks ass and is totally inefficient. use less strokes to achieve the same effect. remember to block your values and blend the transitions. stop going over section repeatedly with excessive brush strokes it looks awful like chicken scratch handwriting not art. the shadow core and reflected light on the ass cheek is so flat i can't even tell im looking at a 3d object it just looks like strips of paint, which by the way is the biggest problem most beginners have; everything they draw and paint looks like pencil marks and paint on paper rather than the thing they are trying to depict. remember you are trying to fool me into thinking im looking at an ass cheek. if im not fooled you have failed.

good stroke economy and lighting. some of the highlights are a little off. i would prefer if the shadow was softer below the neck and if you tapered the strokes on the upper left horn a little more/cleaned up the overlap. lower left horn is really nice, really pops out of the image. the eyes are flat and the eyebrows look pasted on. the middle of the crown looks like you spent ~30s on it. I'd like to see a crisper and darker crease line between the crown and her scalp. would be nice if you beveled the lower right smaller horn like you did the rest of them. ill post a paintover in an hour or so to show you what i mean more specifically since this was kind of a hand-wavy critique.

Alright here are my revisions. I'm sorry it took so long but I think it was worth it because many of the things I fixed in your paintings are what I see as a general problem among beginner and average artists that paint digitally; not going the extra mile to finish the piece, leaving it in an intermediary stage because they know most people won't be able to tell the difference. If for example this took 3 hours to make, you should spend at least another 3 hours doing finishing work. My revisions took about 4 hours, for example. Don't be afraid of spending 20+ hours on a piece if it means the difference between a sketch and something admirable. It is more important that it looks excellent than that you spend less time on it.

Thank you so much for the compliment. Feels good.

Keep at it. I dont know how old you are but I am 29 and I couldnt draw as well as I can now until a year or two ago. And I still suck ass compared to the artists I follow. Before then I spent years making digital art which gave me some stylistic background but I couldnt draw anything on my own very well.

I dont have shit for technical knowledge and I am probably a shitty artist by most accounts, but what I am good at is pouring work into my aesthetic and trying to draw inspiration from a wide range of sources - and doing meta cognitive criticism as I draw.

clarify pit of the neck area. Top of her forehead bulges out a little to much. Ear is too far back on the skull, its also catching to much light in this occluded area. shoulders to wide. One of her traps is concave, the other one is convex. Dont make rim light same width all around the form, it flattens it out. It's a few short word to say that you self examine and make adjustments according to anything mental that goes into your work. This happens naturally if you practice and improve over time.

From your psychological connection to the subject matter i.e. personal history including your aesthetic/cultural background - to anticipation of your tendencies proficiencies/shortcomings in technical knowledge and execution. To preempt both mistakes and breakthroughs by being mentally proactive for one piece with knowledge of how it relates to everything else you've done.

This is all an important part of making art. Look at the definition:

"More precisely, it refers to the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess one's understanding and performance"

If this is word salad to you I do apologize for not being clearer.

Her left leg is too big. It isn't part of the extreme perspective so it should be in normal, flat proportion to the body. In fact if you look at your grid lines it is sitting above her right leg which is perspectively impossible. Also I think her right leg needs to be selected at the top of the knee and dragged a bit towards the center.

Don't think the bloom works with the style. Also in 9/10 cases cast shadows look better with hard edges. Rule of thumb is soft and lost edges for form change and hard edges for form shadows (though obviosly only on round forms).

>>3575716
Focus on lineweight or everything starts blending into eachother. The scale of the hatching (distance between strokes) is at odds with the the dispersion of detail. This makes it read as detail rather than tone which I know isn't the intent.

not him but i know what he means. IMO "overrender" isn't really a thing, because if you take rendering to it's limit, i.e. you "overrender" something, you are essentially mastering that thing. There are other ways of interpreting the word, but that is how I interpret it.

anyway, what he meant was that you need to master a skill (rendering) before you can be loose about it, i.e. you need to know the rules before you can break them. You still are in a stage where you are learning how to render, you are, no offense, not even close to having mastered rendering, so what looks like "painterly" strokes to you looks like unfinished brush work to everyone who knows who has mastered rendering. One of the things about art is that most people have terrible taste, no aesthetic since, no value for skill in art, so you can get away with being unskilled without anyone telling you otherwise. They will use terms like "overrender" to devalue mastery and the achievement of high skill in art. This is a trap, don't fall for it. After a certain point, you need to stop listening to feedback that is anything less than critical. Praise doesn't improve your work, and you can never truly master the making of art. There is always a skill that you can improve on, and you are never going to realize your fullest potential which is why you need to put as much effort in so as to overcome that limitation as much as possible.

A 20th cent. art hist. example would be de Kooning. If you look at his earlier work, it's very tight, very conservative renderings of still lifes. It was this level of skill that he needed to make the kind of loose work he later went on to make and become famous for. When you have no skill and try to make loose work you end up with mediocre dilettante trash like Manet (different than the more familiar Monet- who was a genius) who was never able to accomplish anything in his career because he was never able to master fundamental skills of painting and drawing.

>> No.3577902

And you failed, because your lack of mastery in rendering simple forms efficiently distracted from your stated goal of creating an "atmospheric" piece. None of the decisions you made in your lighting design and edgework says "atmospheric" to me, it just says "rushed" with some lazy scaled up textured brushes.

If you did try to make an "atmospheric" piece in earnest, and all these design choices were simply mistakes, I advise you try to look up the word you are going to center your illustration around, and think logically about what it would look like before starting to draw. Maybe atmospheric calls for softer less defined edges, less defined brushwork, and more haze? It is important to think before you paint or at the very least try to correct mistakes you make while painting so as to keep your work in line with the concept.

sorry to hear about that. manet is the embodiment of everything i think your shouldn't do when painting. we only know he exists because he came from a wealthy family and was well connected in the paris art scene. he is a symbol of corruption and nepotism to me, which is the antithesis to mastery and skill in art. i detest everything about him and the influence he has had on following generations of artists.

>>3578300

your line work is decent, but you need to start constructing your anatomy from basic shapes rather than copying contours. you are getting away with it because your line work is decent like i said. you might be surprised but once you learn how to construct feet and hands they become much more enjoyable to draw (as will everything else). constructing forms makes putting a model in perspective at any angle much easier and will give you a somewhat permanent intuition for making form POP off the page in ways you couldn't do before.

check out russian classical work. russian school is heavily construction based and less focused on rendering. hatching/stroke economy plays a more central role to the technique.

another to look at it burne hogarth although his work isn't as consistent as the russians.

we should have some links to russian academic drawing folders you can download in the sticky. IIRC the quality of some of the pictures isn't great and you will need to prune the folder because some of the student work isn't very good either, but the best work is world class so it is worth it to do a little weeding.

Hha! I've seen you here before! As an over-arching tip, you should learn some color theory! Stop blending into black. Learn how ambient light/occlusion works and your pieces will be so much more powerful and dynamic. Still love what you're doing but I just think you need a little bit of practice. I was actually watching this channel today and I thought you might benefit from watching this shit as well...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwLQ0cDb4cE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fLV5ezO64w

I'd also say that you shouldn't use any human characters in your scenes before you really know how to draw human beigns. The ones where you have a human(oid) in focus are pretty good but the ones where they're just in the BG just feel like they're lazily done and detract from your nice landscape (pic related)...
