They're probably serious. Most people on IC are low(er) skill beginners. One thing a lot of beginners latch onto is technical ability. It's an easily recognizable thing you can look at and want to emulate with a fairly clear path on how to attain it. Wanting to have better ideas or concepts for example is more nebulous and can't as easily be explained.

So beginners obsess over technique /skill level and gravitate to skilled artists, being inspired by their high level of ability. When a lot artists start to attain their own level of skill you develop other interests like the ideas behind the images or whatever. Just my opinion but you see a lot of anons trying to prove they know more about something or trying to find technical deficiencies how the work is drawn or painted rather than commenting on the ideas the image or coming up with a better concept for the costume, lighting, composition background, etc.

way to out yourself as being completely new. Ruanjia has always been known for rendering the shit out of his paintings for weeks or months at a time. Only relatively recently did he start uploading more of the demos he's doing for his students, which tend to be done in under 2 hours.
