tldr of it all: do plenty of studies but when you go to draw personal work don't look for a reference before you even start drawing

This >>3517711 but you have to turn your brain on. A lot of artists struggle with the initial step of finding a brain first, however. Having both hemispheres lit up will net you optimal art gains.

exactly think before you put a mark down. as craig mullins said "think for an hour, paint for a minute".

But I thought your brain only has symbols of what you think something looks like. Did I get meme'd.

Draw from imagination

When you study, draw both from the reference and your imagination so you train your skills in creating something new

Shit, this is the complete opposite of what I do. I scribble and then find the drawing.

If you’re studying mindfully you’re filling your visual library so you have a place to start when you do personal work. If you’re mindlessly copying your studies then yes the symbols will deceive you and you will never be anything more than a xeroxing faggot

Is there a link to this?

Whenever you copy a reference, try to draw it from different angles, turned around, from the back etc.
You might do shitty at first, but you'll learn.

I think a lot of artists use this method as well. I don’t really get it. I always need a clear idea of what I want to draw before I start.

I'm low on time, so I immediately construct those 3d primitives.

Becoming a xerox nigger is the first step to improving.
If you can't draw what you see with your eyes, how can you draw what you see in your mind?

break everything down to abstraction. recompose with art concepts. find abstractions that you like or look really nice. play with how they compose with others. repeat. now you're doing art.

this mostly applies to you too, probably.
