IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So, I'm trying to get an older individual into digital art. They're not as tech-savvy as I'd like, but they can manage email and web browsing for the most part, know what a "tab" or "drop down" is etc etc. I thought a tablet was a decent gift, since they were a talented artist wayyy back when and constantly lament not having the room for traditional art, but have a television they can hook their laptop up to.

Any particular youtube series you guys would recommend for Krita, for someone who isn't that great with computers?

Don't just do drawabox, try to also do other fundies at the same time, like gesture, figure or anatomy.
What drawabox teaches you is better discipline for your lines, and seeing what you're gonna draw as three-dimensional, if drawabox's approach isn't really suiting you, you can get similar results by copying irl objects with a pen.
You need to do other fundies at the same time because just perfecting your line an perception isn't much if you aren't also learning how things look and move.
My personal opinion: don't start with circles, they're absolutely useless, you can get the same kind of practice by just doing your regular studies with a pen and forcing yourself to make confident strokes. Even if it doesn't work at first, it will with time.

I was thinking you could start with ctrlpaint, because I think a lot of beginners struggle with seeing what's in front of them (they do symbol drawing, their proportions are off) and that website has some neat lessons on negative space and ways to measure your stuff without being all precise about it, you should probably do that before launching yourself in copies of photos and life studies. If you can actually perceive angles and shapes correctly you'll improve way faster, in my opinion.
So to recap: all in pen, first exercises on ctrlpaint (the traditional drawing section), with some studies of what you want on the side, applying what you learn from that website.
It sounds like a lot but you can probably get away with doing this like 2 hours a day, and I've done those lessons, they're actually not that daunting once you start.
Obviously don't overwork yourself, if you're focused on what you're learning you don't have to strain yourself to death.

I don't have a series to recommend, but there's a video from sara tepes titled "introduction to krita" that seems helpful. I would also make a new brush folder for them, with just a small hard round brush, a large hard round brush, a large airbrush, smudging brush, and a soft/hard eraser brush (and whatever else you think he would need). I am aware you can change the brush size, but it would be easier for a beginner to be able to just switch between tools in the brush menu on the fly instead of looking for hotkeys. Eventually, when they get more accustomed to digital art, they'll leaen about brush resizing. Also teach them about the pan and zooming hotkeys (which i believe are space and control+space) and other basic hotkeys like saving and flipping the canvas (m).

>> No.3497530

>>3497511
What I recommend beginners is to start small and work your way up from there.
I see people who just barely started say they'll do like 8 hours a day, they get burned out in not even a week, because they're not used to it. You need to build your resistance, 8h a day isn't easy even for more advanced artists, I mean, you're supposed to put your full focus and mind on this task for what seems like an endless amount of hours, and if before this you never did anything this taxing, have no discipline, and you just barely started? You won't wanna continue. This is how people stop for months, and isn't useful.
It's better if you start with reasonable and more reachable goals, this way you can also feel the satisfaction when you're able to do them.
Good luck anon!

Hello,

I got my first ever sketchbook and drew something bigger than a stick figure. I'm about halfway through drawabox lesson 1 and wanted to do something. I copied the dragon from here (https://celestialvale.wikia.com/wiki/File:Gold_Dragon.png)), my main goal was being able to recreate the shapes (I added the background out of boredom but didn't copy it from anything).

Thoughts? How can I learn to shade/do shadows/lighting?

(Ain’t a sketchbook if it has lined paper but whatever, you do you.)

It looks decent, I think the two most important things to do is distinguish the subject from the background and have a more defined light source.

As for the background and the subject, the two kind of meld together and makes the composition hard to read. I’d suggest making the subject lighter than the background, as your subject is the focus. A good rule is to squint so you blur your eyes, you should be able to tell what’s going on even when your eyes are unfocused.

As for the light source, that can be achieved with shading of course as well as higher contrast. Based on the picture, I’d probably place the light coming in from the right. Be sure to shade things that the light wouldn’t reach, do some practice with making light to dark gradients with a pencil. That always helps me. As for contrast, that mostly pertains to making the dark spots darker. If you have a good balance of light and dark, it should come out to look more interesting.

Hope that helps! I’m a bit new to participating in /beg/ and helping folks out, I hope that wasn’t too muddled and confusing lol

Hey man that's not a bad attempt.
Before you go into value though, you want to make sure that your measurements and angles are correct.
Some of yours are pretty good for example as far as the hair is concerned.
But other parts throw of your entire facial structure for example the size and shape of the jaw, the size of the ear, eye sliding of to the side of the face, nose being to far in the center and too far up.
-check what you're working on by comparing it to already correctly established landmarks with horizontal and vertical measurements.
-While you're drawing at times shift your perception from the actual space to the negative space.
For example, instead of focusing on the ear, focus on the space surrounding it, sometimes that makes it easier to see what is wrong.

The skill is used for drawing through boxes, enveloping bargue plates, checking accuracy of geometric constructions with compass and straightedge, origami, etc. So it's a good warmup (use both hands if using a mouse to avoid injury), but you can practice this skill doing other activities and train other skills at the same time.

So far I've only practised mannequins and sketch laters, so I've never really done details to my drawings.

This is how I was referencing it. Maybe it's a bit close to the drawing? If I overlay it I can see that the left leg is a bit chubby which threw off the overall figure.

With the contour you're edging along the outline of what you're trying to draw.
With substance I mean the foundation of consturcting a figure, building the figure up with simple forms ontop of a well reading gesture.
Trying to do the same with the outline is like trying to find your way blindfolded through a maze.

The line part in gestures is a trap^^ the line is just a tool through which you describe the action, and the action is just a fancy term for the relationship of forms.

Correct it is about gesture, from the clenched fist and spread legs I could tell it was supposed to be a fighting pose, however apart from that nothing else really expresses that.
"Really think about what you want it to say" is a way to not get bogged down in meaningless and random gestures

This is a nice tool, but it's not the end all be all. Another good (but irritating) exercise would be looking at an object, then trying to draw it from a different angle without changing your viewing angle. The whole point is to plan out the big picture and then work more and more on details. When your drawing is just a bunch of thin lines and points that you're visualizing upon, it's easier to erase and correct.

That shouldn't really be a concern. We - as the audience - know it's skin. What you should focus on is the big-picture stuff, like getting your values to describe the forms, and a general sense of construction to help build the features of the face in a proportional and normal looking way. For example - you drew the eyes differently, when the eyes in the ref are very similar and more rounded. This could have been fixed by mapping out & balancing the general proportions of his face first, and THEN going in and rendering the features.

I have real difficulty drawing characters that are sort of simplified shapes, think stuff like looney tunes, or well basically anything that would need to be on model in that way.
What should I practice to improve in that? And how to practice it?
