IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I mean yes, the shit I manage to draw when just copying lines and trying to block out shapes and stuff looks better than anything I can come up with from my mind, but I feel like sooner or later you have to actually start to figure how shit looks without just copying it from the ref.

This can be made even easier if you choose to use a ruler to make straight lines and use a folded piece of paper to measure (oddly enough). Put the folded paper next to what you want to measure and mark off the important points on that folded paper, then transfer that to your own drawing.
When you're comfortable and want to increase the difficulty, you can freehand your lines and use skewers/string/floss/whatever to measure.

the shape of the face is kinda off, like the sides of the jaw are way bigger/angular than in the ref.
Also his head is tilted, but I think the bottom of the nose looks kinda like it's meant for a straight face.
Not sure if that would fix the "messy" feeling, but you're better than me at this shit, so take that as you will.

Tracing allows you to see what a perfect copy would look like (you learn quickly not to represent teeth with straight lines, you figure out how you can represent an entire flower field with texture). Copying forces you to pay attention to your drawing habits (I tend to draw the nose huge compared to the rest of the face, I now know I need to correct my habit of doing this) and is much easier to critique than a drawing from imagination.

>> No.3493927

I guess this makes sense.
The question came to mind when I was blocking in small shadows on a face, since I
basically had no idea why they're even there, kinda felt pointless.
Though I probably shouldn't be trying to draw and shade a full face with my skills.

>> No.3493932

>>3493878

I'm a different anon but I kind of disagree with you! You've made some nice decisions on your strokes and shading but just like the other guy said, you need more practice with shape construction and anatomy.

I recommend this video for your photo studies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgJXyEsakC8<

Don't try to fix the stuff that you appreciate. Good shading is always nice but I don't think that's your biggest problem. Try to fix the stuff that you're the worst at. It's fucking painful but you have to do it to get better. Cheerios.

I used to be put off by how approximate measuring seemed to be, since measuring with something as clumsy as a thumb on a stick seemed to actively worsen my accuracy, especially for short lengths. Using paper to measure was a lot better and now I like measuring. It's also good for learning proportions, I think Keys talks about comparing lengths between different parts of your subject.

i draw anime heads after grinding my fundies too

i am a beginner so i dont know much. but when i analyze anime heads of young characters, there is a sphere , then a small "chin" that protrudes from the bottom of the sphere in a triangular prism like fashion that is supposed to be the jaw. BUT when drawing the hair , it actually extends above the sphere in the more "cute" drawings ive seen. like, the hair doesnt actually follow the sphere, it forms an ellipse/oblong or egg shape with a minor axis equal to the radius of the sphere, beginning around the ears and its major axes extends 10-20% past the radius of the sphere at the top of the head.

i can post a picture in a little bit on what i mean

It's helpful to use less strokes when making line art, you want long, consistent strokes. Don't be afraid of messing up, you can just press ctrl z. If you lower the opacity and change the color of your original piece and make a new layer above it, you can re draw the clean line art over it. Then you can sketch in digital pencil but still end up with clean work

you need to learn actual anatomy, construction, and realism to draw anything worth a damn from imagination. there are no shortcuts in the long run. you'll learn some tips from these videos and from copying cute faces, but you need to put in the time. draw what you want still, copy work you find attractive, but study too.

make your figures more 3d, I never liked the squigly lines art it doesn't help when you try to draw 3d shapes.

squigly lines are good for people who do urban sketching or comics, but if you want to get better at figure drawing spend 5 min on each sketch to get the "3d" feeling into the sketch.

the thing with landmarks is, the first one you fuck up causes a domino effect
you need to be checking and rechecking if your goal is to copy a photo

also start using your stylus to measure angles. sit back from your screen hold your pen up and see what your angle is supposed to be and replicate it. it looks like things went south because you got the angle of the cheek wrong and the crest of the head (then the eye line, chin, etc followed suit)

Hello art friends. I'm a /sci/fag but have always felt I was missing something in my life. I think it is expression.

I can't draw for shit. Barely even stick figures. I would like to be able to draw decently within the next 2 years. I've been practicing drawing with drawabox for 4 - 5 hours a day for the past week and a half (it is easy for me because I can just do it while watching movies or listening to podcasts). I'm still grinding out lesson 1, repeating things to be sure I get the fundamentals down. Is this (drawabox) a good path for someone like me?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPtlXb7fLfs
-learn about shapes
-dont draw things you cannot actually see, the (from her view) right side is one big shadow shape theres no way you saw an eye there
-Don't start drawing randomly and then adding to it like a patchwork, that's how you get drifting features and disproportion. Start with the overall, something to contain your drawing.
-Judge your angles and distances over and over again, you will develope a better feeling for it but for now you need to be super aware of them.

Stopping chicken scratch is not about being clean but about carefully visualizing the lines/forms you're trying to draw and correctly get them down without shooting off a bunch of lines faster than your mind can keep up.

Slow down and think more about the whole image while you draw, always use your shoulder except for really tiny details, and don't worry if it's wobbly since (like you said) that can be cleaned up later. The lines in the example drawings in Keys to Drawing are what you should be doing.

You simplified them for instance, pic related, the artist divides the foot into shapes for him to see how it works, now that doesn't mean it's going to work for anyone because that's how he sees a foot, that's his formula. You're going to end up doing the same by making your own formula to approach your drawings. Keep grinding, and I hope this helps.

As a wannabe comic artist, I started doing an exercise where I tried drawing a picture on those office Sticky Notes. Every picture was supposed to give the impression of being part of a bigger story or a complete thought. you don't have to call it a gesture you can just study the construction/anatomy and call it a study. the goal of gesture is to capture movement. it teaches you natural human posing and can assist your composition in the future. its not just construction but also negative space and "flow" of the body

I would just not shade in vast areas like the skin and hat right now. You’re practicing trying to get the form right, and having a layer of charcoal atop them creates a barrier to editing. I’d only use the charcoal for actual shadows. In your current picture it’s honestly hard to find the shadows from the skin color.

Back for another try after going through the materials given to me and I'm not sure if I even did any better than last time.

Blocking in with wrapping lines didn't work at all for me and made things even harder, I think the head is at least facing the right way this time but I cannot find any decent measurements or landmarks to map the nose and right side of the face properly.

It's really frustrating because I can't seem to use any other method like negative space when I'm measuring, it's like my eyes go blind and can only rely on the measurements or it instantly looks wrong.

This just looks like you disgruntedly spent 5 min on it and then gave up based on how horrible it is.
It's not better or even all that different than the last one. which is not suprising, considering that it looks like you didn't even try anything differntly.
There are 2 things that might be the cause
a.)your attitude/Frustration is the real problem.
or
b.)your eye/judgement/coordination are not developed enough
If it's B no Technique or method will help, you'll just have to draw (a lot) like excercising a muscle. Untill you've reached a point where studying is actually gonna help you.

Here's my advice.
either
-move away from portraits, since they're about the hardest thing you can draw, and come back later once you have developed your eye/judgement/coordination
or
-use a grid (aka training wheels) at least that way you'll know how far off-course you're going
-In either case, draw longer, treat it like you would your girlfriend, take your time, how are you gonna get anywhere if you splooge in your pants in the first 5 min?
