All mechs with head-mounted cockpits have three units of internal structure there. Additionally, they have armor - lighter mechs typically have less protection, but mechs upwards of anything bigger than about 45 tons usually (there are exceptions, of course) mount nine units of armor on the head to protect the pilot.

This means that any weapon which does ten points of damage - such as the particle projection cannons (PPC's, for short) mounted on the WHM-6R Warhammer seen blazing away in the background of >>3466585 - can potentially kill any other mech with a single shot by striking the head, eliminating all the armor, and damaging one unit of internal structure. That illustration is somewhere in the middle; after all, the head has other things inside such as life support equipment, sensors, communication gear, and - depending on the design - sometimes even a weapon, but as far as the pilot is concerned, the cockpit is undoubtedly the most crucial. It's where he's sitting.

I know that's a rhetorical question, but ... I joined LAS/DAD specifically *because* of the mecha challenge. It's already what I wanted to do, but the challenge pushed me to work harder and more consistently.

The point of concept art is to convey an idea visually to a 3d modeler, if it’s not colored the modeler is not gonna know wtf to do or have to carry your asses.

His craft is great of course, but you can tell its a well researched idea that he iterated on and explored into the ground, and he even shows steps in the design process.
Additionally you can look at maybe someone like Carlyn Lim:

She recently posted a variety of stuff done in-house for Arenanet, and although its probably not as polished as she would like, the ideas are explored deeply and thought process is shown throughout. The type of work someone will put out in a studio is different than the work we can put into our portfolios while in a vacuum though, due to them working under tight deadlines and not being able to freely polish things for as long to impress people. Personal portfolio projects really should be shooting for your very best long term efforts using every trick and tool you've got (while also showing the shorter efforts which lead to the final process, so people see how you think)

Oh I phrase this poorly, sorry! I meant lighting passes, as in rendering this out further. When you think about rendering, the idea is to convey materials to the viewer. Even with more stylized work you can still really show differences in material due to how the highlights are handled. The way you're presently handling the shapes and values of the light makes it fairly difficult for the viewer to tell what things are made of. Of course this depends on the aim of your portfolio, so you may treat things differently if they aren't going to eventually be modeled for example.

I understand now that digital is better but since I have no interest in digital, I will not join such an intense design challenge in the future, I also didn't use a whole lot of reference since I was concerned with originality, big mistake.

Yo,

ww3.lol now supports directional expansion, as well as choosing a specific territory you want to expand to with your submission instead of always just going out randomly. Commands supported in pic related. Color command is to change your color, avatar is to force an update on your avatar from the dad site and start is to set your starting position if you currently don't have any territory to expand from. The house commands are work in progress, but pretty easy to implement.

Example: MOVE:NORTH would make you expand to the territory most north available to you, regardless of it being occupied by someone already or not. TAKE:723 would expand you to territory 723 if it's available to you (bordering you, and also ignores current occuption). Since the TAKE command requires the territory ID; I've made all territories clickable now, not just the occupied ones.

All that's missing now is a way for you guys to issue the commands with your submission, which is main site integration from banana. Might be weeks, might be months, might never happen, but I've made it available at least.

I'm not going to be policing this stuff right now, but let me say that official discussion on this topic will be tabled, not killed, while I get my ass in gear and pump out dev for the site. We'll return to this topic later.

In the meantime, it is extremely important to recognize that prestige level 4 and 5 is meant to represent really going above and beyond (and surprisingly, the mecha challenge satisfies this, more than half the participants couldn't complete it or gave up). Expected effort from prestige 1 to 5 is almost exponential in scale. Bear this in mind when calling out people, or assessing whether you personally deserve it or not. Did you follow the prompt to the best of your ability? Did you use all of the time allocated effectively and make the absolute best polished product you could've, within reason, dictated by time commitments and skill level? If no, then we might have some problems.

I never liked the idea of the tribunal (outside of EXTREMELY blatant cheating and low effort), since if you didn't make an authentic effort, you're only hurting yourself. However, I am strongly considering implementing one for high-tier badge earnings because Prestige 4 and 5 are supposed to be on a whole other level of their own.
