I don't know specifically how they did it, but there are a lot of special effects you can achieve on film with different exposures. Cels can also be back-lit.

Almost every basic filter in Photoshop has a corollary in film/photography, hence the name.

That's not true. There are a lot of professionals who have stories about how someone gave them a chance or encouraged or helped them pull themselves up in some way. Not even just in the art world. It's pretty ridiculous to treat any kind of positivity and human connection like it's forbidden or some shit.
