IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So im a hikki autist who doesnt socially interact at all, never will, never will want to attend any courses, I want to be entirely self taught. Posting here will be my only interaction for criticism and advice. Is the rate at which I will improve, in terms of getting feedback, be as much as getting taught? Ive got plenty of time so its not an issue, but it would suck if you need to go to some faggot meetup to advance properly in art. Also: does motivation matter? Here are my motivations:

>see artist's work I like
>want to be like him
>same field of interest of what to paint
>want to project my ideas in a visceral way (I write but at times I feel like it isnt fully expressed enough)
>dont have any high notion of art, dont have a 'muh individual struggle' narrative, just want to put thoughts into picture

Are there any motivations that are red flags for failure?

is it a trap robot? Otherwise why are you emphasizing the blocks and grids so much as you set up? Reducing people to shapes as you draw is good but so much effort into right angles and squares isn't going to help.
Anyway it looks like the anatomy of a short but muscular guy, like Ed Elric. An actual trap needs narrow shoulders, less muscular arms, a very soft pec region, and far less built glutes/thighs

do i need to 'draw from the elbow' from the absolute beginning? how many times should i do the stravinsky upside down? does it help to have the thing youre trying to draw physically printed out, or is copying from a computer screen fine?

>> No.3366559

>>3366512
Yes, draw from the elbow always. Practice drawing straight lines and circles and such for a few, maybe several pages. Once you get the general idea move on to the next thing. You don't need to grind it hard cause it'll come naturally as you do other stuff.

The point of stravinsky drawing is to show you that you can draw something accurately as long as your brain isn't overloading you with symbols. It's more of a novelty newbie thing, hardly an exercise.

Print or screenshot, doesn't matter. Life drawing trumps both though.

>> No.3366564

>>3366512
1. yes, you are going to be drawing from your arm and elbow regularly, and probably reserving your wrist for detail, so you need to build familiarity from drawing from those points
2. Once between a set of studies, it's made so you know how well you can copy something 1:1. If you
re lacking, try doing some exercises from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain or Keys to Drawing
3. I'd go with print myself, but I mostly study from object I have in the house more. but as >>3366559 said, life drawing is gonna help most in the long run, so don't be afraid to go outside and draw shit out there.

Those legs are downright creepy and you lost the perspective on them. Leg position implies that her weight is on her left foot, therefore her hips should be tilted the other way for a more natural look. Yes, stop blending altogether, it's not a good tool for begginers. Learning to render with line or varying the weight of your pencil will help you out more. Same goes for erasing, it holds you back when you're a begginer. Start using those techniques once you become more knowledgeable on the medium you're using and get a better grasp on values.

Push your hips as far back as they can go in the chair. In office chairs, the best way to sit is to let the shaped back support your back and shoulders by scooting your hips back as far as they go, then adjusting the other components of the chair to offer support. If you're sitting in a straight, hard-backed chair, scoot your bottom up to the edge of the chair and sit without slouching into the back of that chair. Sit with your back and shoulders as straight as if they were supported by the chair back. Over time, this is a more comfortable position for your back, neck, and shoulders. If you're sitting in a lounge chair or a couch, it's important to keep your feet flat on the floor and your back straight. Your shoulders should be back and you should be as far forward on the couch as possible. Keep your shoulders back and your back straight. Wherever and however you're sitting, it's important to keep your shoulders back to avoid slouching or hunching your back as you sit. Over time, this can strain your neck and shoulders, leading to chronic pain and headaches. Don't lean your chair backward or slouch yourself forward while you're sitting, or you can strain your sciatic nerve and your shoulder muscles. This serves to keep you off-balance. It is good to rock gently, if possible, if you're going to be sitting for a longer time. This helps to keep the body active and balanced. Adjust the seat height to fit your body. The seat of your chair should be high enough so that your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are even with your hips, or slightly lower. If you sit too low in the chair, you can end up straining your neck, while if you sit too high, your shoulders can get tired over time. If you need to adjust your seat so that it is higher, you may find that your feet don't comfortably reach the ground. Try putting a stool, cushion, or another object under your feet. Adjust the back of the chair to a 100°-110° reclined angle.

I don't think I can point to any single book and say it helped me more than any other, and I don't know if I've gone more than halfway through most of these books. But here are the most important ones I guess:
See, Feel, Trace, Draw It by Sheldon Borenstein got me started with drawing gesture. Really short, only a few paragraphs of text, the rest are drawing examples to study and copy.
Vilppu Drawing Manual and Figure Drawing - Design and Invention (Hampton) to refine gesture/figure drawing.
Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. I love the way he draws forms.

I've probably gotten more out of video lectures though. Seeing someone execute what you're trying to learn while also commenting on the mental process helps a lot.
Vilppu's NMA video lectures (mainly the videos about form).
Erik Olson's perspective videos.
Scott Eaton's anatomy videos.

I also read some Loomis and watched Proko but I found them a bit harder to chew.

Think about drawing like swimming in a pool. The instructor tells everyone to hop in. Nobody really knows what they're doing. Everyone jumps into the pool except you. Standing at the edge of the water, you think to yourself "I don't know how to swim, I need to learn that first." You think "If I jump in now, I will just look stupid and not know what I'm doing". You walk away. You're going to do some research first.

The next day you return after watching videos and reading lessons. Now you're ready. The instructor asks everyone to hop in the pool. Never having done this before, you slowly tip toe into the water. You hold on to the side of the pool for fear of floating away. The instructor then asks everyone to meet him near the end of the pool. "The fucking deep end?!" You think to yourself. You don't even know how to swim and he wants you in the deep end? You grip the edge even tighter as you watch everyone else happily paddle over. "Tread water everyone, and I'll get right into the lesson." Tread water? What is he talking about? You get out of the pool. You must have missed something. You'll make sure to look this up and be ready for next time.

The next day you come back. You enter the pool and try to "tread water". It's supposed to help you float, you think. You try to replicate what you saw in the video, but never having been in the water before, you're struggling. The instructor arrives and asks everyone to do three laps of the pool. Shocked, hanging on the the ledge, you simply float there. "This is stupid" you think to yourself. "I'm just going to do something else." Cursing the teacher, all the videos you watched, you walk into the change room blaming everything but yourself.

I like the design, you should however try to improve your line art. It's inconsistant, use thicker lines for shadows or areas that are hard to read(left arm and upper body; shoulders and chest. I kind of like the scratchy aesthetic though, other artist probs disagree though. Try incorporating high contrast shadows for different planes, think of eyesockets, under the nose, under cheekbones instead of random scratches on the head.

I would study the structure of rocks first and come up with a satisfactory line drawing before you try to render or else it will come out kind of formless like your pic. Pushing values never hurts though, you dont want just high contrast but a high range.
Pay close attention to the texture of the type of rock youre intent on rendering as well as its sheen or lack thereof

I think the biggest misconception people who draw have when they get into painting is that painting is all done in one layer at one time. I'd recommend starting out with just a basic layer of mid tone, shadow, and highlight, then take a step back, wait until it's a little more dry, and then go back in and detail.

The thing about How To Draw is that each page describes concepts very quickly, but you need to practice those things quite a lot. If you skip over stuff you'll quickly get overwhelmed. I think it was designed as an aid for teaching classes.
That's why I loved Erik Olson's videos. He presents one idea, then you explore every facet of that idea for the next 5 videos. And every video thereafter repeats every idea you've gone through so it gets hammered into your brain.
