further, this shows a misunderstand of art, there are grandmasters in chess because chess is a game, which you win. art is not a game, it's art. there are no 'ultimate arts masters' like fucking pai mei or some shit. art is expressive not qualitative and not competitive, and if you don't understand that you'll never understand art, not even as a consumer.

Even by the official definition of old master this is entirely false. To be a master you had to pass a qualitative examination, and this standard increased constantly based on the level of competition at any given time

That's the official definition. In informal usage, the definition is more liberal but still applied only to artists who are considered to have passed a certain level of competence. So quality and competition is always considered in art and its history. But even if this weren't the case, you'd be hypocritical for adhering to the informal definition of old master while criticizing OP for using a term which only has informal usage in art

I like to quantify things. I'd say the work in the OP is OBJECTIVELY better than 99.9% of all works, which I qualify as GM. I throw the term around loosely as lazy banter but I like the mindset as it makes me uncomfortable with only doing simple exercises.

just want to say this isn't that great, it's basically graisaille with like a tiny bit of color. is pretty and all but in terms of technique not so special, all basic stuff, basic (incorrect) anatomy, reflected lights in the shadows, basic modelling. basic transitions. basic pseudo caravaggisti neoclassical italian rip off style with a shameless bernini buttsqueeze 'omage'

i don't say this to pan ferri or anything, but you shouldn't see this particular painting as like a work beyond compare because it's like midtier for good figurative art. it's actually really technically, and i hate to say it, only better than sakimochan in that it takes way longer to paint in oils than on a computer.

Yusuke Murata falls into the category for the animation/comic/manga side of things. Look at some of his Spider-Man works. The man is nothing short of incredible. Hell, he drew Goku and Frieza better than the original Dragon Ball illustrator. His work for Udon's Street Fighter novel has been great, too.

pic related is not the one, but there is a sort of molten mass of like 8 children, conjoined at the chest/shoulder area much like this one and they all have dicks for noses. this always comes to mind when i hear chapman brothers. i'm not a fan of shock-art in general, but what they do has a good, iconoclastic background.

Francis Bacon was obsessed with Velazquez' portrait of the pope. he collected reprints of it and went to see it many times. Whether you get your inspiration from Velazquez, cave paintings or Goya, doesn't matter.

some artists' works are being rediscovered for certain qualities. Goya is an evergreen in that respect. Rene Magritte is also becoming "more and more modern".
my personal choice in that respect is Yves Tanguy

i love how he constructs bodies and how excellent his feeling for shapes and compositions was. i think his prints show that skill clearer than his paintings. he wasn't all too skilled with colors, but more of a graphic, contrast based artist.
Alfred Kubin was bad at oil paintings and almost only did graphic works and drawings, where he excelled.
