I've never seen anything that explains "construction" beyond "draw a circle and draw an axis where the eyes should go and maybe lines for the nose and mouth too". Whenever I do that, I usually just end up ignoring the line for the eyes anyway, it doesn't seem to help much. And what if I put the line in the wrong place, anyway. How am I supposed to "construct" that very first guideline? How am I supposed to know how much and where it curves? And when I chisel out that first circle into the cheeks and chin, what if I end up making some of those parts too big and too small, how am I supposed to construct all those details on the surface of the "skull"?

At some point you just have to draw the fucking thing. Which is where it all goes wrong. I'm open to learning though. Just please don't tell me to read Fun With A Pencil again.

No offense, but you have no idea what you're talking about. So stop trying to convince yourself of things using your own guesswork.

Drawing takes time to get good at. It's as simple as that. If you think construction isn't the answer, you haven't practiced enough. You haven't learned enough. Failure = lessons. Learn something every time you fail. This is why drawing takes time to get really good at. You need to fail over and over and over until you've learned all the lessons. So instead of going "FUCK THIS ISNT WORKING I SUCK I MUST BE DOING IT WRONG WHATS THE SECRET", cut that shit out, look at your shitty drawing and think: "What can I learn from this?"

Allow me to reiterate. Skills are not developed through success. They are developed through failure. Failure is where learning takes place.

"How to Draw"? Yes it can be pretty tedious. Once you finish it and practice a little you should understand the basics of how to do grids and how to construct buildings or vehicles in perspective. I'm just out of /beg/ but even I can understand how much help this book is if you're any interested in making backgrounds, comics, or draw characters in any setting, really. It's full of things to memorize but it's conveyed well through the exercises. Try doing one exercise a day, maybe?
If you don't give up now and work for a few hours every day with books or precise guidelines to lead you, you will see progress quicker than by any other means, I promise (the baseline here is to have a precise of idea of what to do- that's why artbooks are so great, they are full of related informations and methods to learn them efficiently). You're in the boring part of learning how to do art, I know, because everything you do doesn't end up looking great. You've got to find happiness in the little things you achieve: a curve or a line that looks good, a drawing with correct construction and perspective, something that ends up looking more decent that usual,...

If all you do is copy existing drawings, you're less likely to achieve functional cartooning skills. You may pick up some stylization at best.

Serious anime/cartoon drawing is about object/form design first and foremost. Go look at good Japanese artists who also draw fanart of western cartoons. You might better see the fundamental skills that aren't related to copying style cliches.

That's fair.

At first I thought they had a problem with the "angular" approach I attempted at that point, just something that from gesture study I did in the past, but after some consideration I concluded that its probably kneecap placement.

Its hard to tell because they gave no indication about what they think its wrong with it, and it can be several different things. Its such a small thing it would be good to just have mention something about it, or failing that, provide a red line if hard to articulate using words. The problem with "figure it out yourself" its that its very possible to get "wronger" if you know what I mean, although that sometimes can be pretty funny.

I have been drawing all my life, technically, for at least 20 years. However for most of that time is not a conscientious approach. I have been drawing far longer than being as mediocre as I am.

Your calf inserts are too low, making the lower leg look really weird. That flat area under the knee on the back of the leg shouldn't be there. If you go on Quickposes and look at some pictures of women, you'll see what I mean.

>>3295469
Its probably rich coming from me, but practicing in traditional arts is not necessarily about learning to draw just one way, but being able to analyses what you are seeing and produce results for desired effect. Its true that many people who draw anime or cartoon style doesn't have very in depth traditional arts training, in many cases this is how their personal style is developed, but this also makes them less flexible as artists.

theyre training wheels you idiot. theyre literal visual concepts that you can later shed with repeated practice. its not necessary but it can help. like most other things. do it for long enough and work hard at it take breaks and change how you tackle it and maybe something will click. youre looking for that something. practice more and switch the ways you go about things then come back. find what works for you on your own through mental hardwork its not completely passive

Pic related. It's a bit of a strange shaped face anyway but mine isn't wide enough I don't think. I kind of just started with a circle and then retardedly added features to it.

That's kind of what I mean when I say I have no idea what I'm doing. I understand the importance of construction but applying it the stylised feature of anime characters is tricky to say the least.

Look at "how to draw anime" tutorials on deviantart or something. I'm not even fucking kidding. Don't just settle for any tutorial but if you're struggling this hard with the basics of construction, you need the legitimate basics of tutorials (use your eyes to see which ones are gonna be the least shit of course). Don't copy THEM, but look at them and see how they put faces together, understand the shapes they use and where they put the lines in the face, and then use that understanding to draw the kind of pictures you want to be able to replicate with a similar thought process. If you can't immediately transfer existing images to a bunch of circles and lines (which you probably won't be able to, even with your reference stuff, and that's okay!) then trace your guidelines over the pictures you want to draw. Don't trace the picture itself, but use the tutorials you have as reference and try to work out how these pictures come together and trace said pictures with the construction shapes. Over and over again until you understand the shapes that make them up. Then start replicating your guidelines you drew over the pictures instead of the pictures themselves. It's not hard at all to draw guidelines for a stylised face when you have some kind of reference, in fact it's definitely much easier than doing it for realistic things. You won't get it perfect the first time. You won't get it perfect the second time. Do it over and over and eventually you will get it to a level you're happy with. Then do it a hundred more times and do a hundred more pictures and you'll be able to do it quickly and effectively, and one day you will have your own style and won't need to replicate random anime pictures anymore.
(picture attached looks like shit obviously, but I'm on mobile and i wanted something to quickly demonstrate what i mean. Do it properly, of course, but seriously, this kind of exercise will help you to understand it so much.)

Then you need more observation / measuring. She has a pointy chin, and the left edge of her face implies form, even though the curvature is tiny. And much larger irises. Also in a slightly different angle.

>started with a circle
I believe japs mostly start with a cross and a segmented V shape that doesn't really look too different from usual loomis, just quicker.
