IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So I posted this before over at a /vp/ draw thread and i was informed that the face was a little too manly. I was wondering exactly what areas are making that seem like so over here. It's a recurring problem I've been aware of for awhile now, this isn't the first case. Any other criticisms in other areas are fine. I was too lazy to finish the arms and legs.

I'm just starting with my tablet and using Photoshop. If you can easily reach the command with a keyboard then use that. I map actions/macros, big reaching shortcuts, or anything right of TGB on a qwerty keyboard to the tablet. I'm still experimenting but here's what I've got for buttons(12 button tablet, 6 rows of 2):

>top 6 buttons
new layer - flip canvas horizontal
pen - lasso
alt ] - alt [ (move up/down layer selected)
>bottom 6
new multiply layer - selection from path (action to turn work path into selection and delete work path)
not used - clear layer
not used - not used

I only have right click on my pen. A huge tip is you can hold down a shortcut for a tool, use it, then let go of the key and go back to your original tool. So I'm almost always in brush (b isn't that far away anyway) but to switch between eraser and brush I just have to hold E and let go when I'm done.

The main shortcuts I use are R (esc to reset angle), CTRL-E (merge down), CTRL-D (deselect), E, V then ctrl click to select layer, alt on brush tool for color picker, ctrl alt right click for adjusting brush size dragging left and right, alt shift right click for bringing up the color sqaure and hue ribbon on the cursor, tab for hiding ui.

Not him, but there's a lot of different "beginner" courses and you have to throw yourself at them until you hit something that sticks. I didn't care for Loomis either but some of the pages I've seen from his figure drawing and head/hands books aren't bad. Don't sweat over Fun with a Pencil, I really didn't like that book or the subject matter. Some of the beginner books are shitty because they're meant to just get someone drawing with stupid exercises that don't teach much other than that they can make marks on paper and not come out terribly. "How to Draw" is a book I'd recommend for reading about perspective and then see what works for you with Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton or some others. The basic things like confident lines, ellipses, volumes, and all with be similar in all of them.

Figure Drawing for All it's Worth. Creative Illustration is his only truly good book, but it's far from entry level. Like other anon said, it's just one method of construction out of many, but the tips cover most problems you encounter in figure drawing. When people say "do loomis", they mean that there is a fundamental problem with proportion and perspective that would be fixed by reading FDFWIW and making a proportional mannikin in perspective or carefully measuring the planes and features of the face.

Fuck his head method, though.

Okay I'm going to post this here because literally nobody else has been able to give me a straight answer.

I'm... okay with drawing from life, provided I'm patient enough. But every time I have to mentally think of an image to put down on paper it's usually too vague to properly translate each line and make something coherent - so I start properly thinking on my mental image in more detail, and... that's where I start to feel physically ill. My head begins to hurt, I start to tear up and shake, pins and needles start running up from my arms to my fingertips and I can't get anywhere farther than that.

Am I literally fucking autistic, have something fucked in my brain that won't let me recall objects vividly or does this actually happen? None of the people I know who are into illustration have ever had this problem and none of my neurologist colleagues have any idea what the fuck I'm talking about, and suggested anxiety which I know for a fact isn't the case - if it were associated to drawing I'd understand it but the same thing happens to me if I'm trying to think of the details without necessarily being in front of a page. It's really annoying.

Eh, color theory isn't as important at this stage as values. But don't think that value means only gray scale. Learning to see the value of colors is very important. You can paint with relatively shitty palette and still end up with great work when you have strong understanding of contrast and edges.

Can argue there's overlap I guess. But as a complete stranger on the internet, I say focus on values; nail the contrast and edges;

>> No.3262508

Why are you forcing your brain to think of details though? it's incredibly dumb. Draw your sketch based on what you're capable of imaginaing then fix and add things using references.

Not to mention if you've read just a tiny bit about neuroscience and the process of learning you'd know the brain omits unimportant details all the time to gain access to information faster (basically, it wants to learn quickly, things you don't use or need aren't kept in your mind for long periods of time). You've been forcing your brain to do something it's not supposed to do.

I'm going through Loomis now trying to develop my own model for the female body out of simple shapes. I understand the pelvis pokes out at certain places, and that's what I'm trying to overcome atm.
Also, is it worth dropping a few hundred on a tablet with a screen on it? I have a small intuos but I feel like it would be a lot easier and more fun to draw if I had some direct visual feedback from my pen strokes. Though I may just be autistic and about to waste half a grand for nothing.

The one piece of advice that I would give to any beginner, and then only piece of advice that I will give right now to any artist is this...

Don’t come here to have your art critiqued. Go somewhere else where you can verify that the person who is critiquing you knows their shit.

Come here to share your progress and ideas, but go somewhere else on the internet if you want someone to accurately tell you how to improve your work. Hell, I wish I could take back half of the art supplies that I bought and spend the money on a professional to critique my progress.

You may not want to hear this, but I feel like the most quality critiquing you can get for your buck is by finding a portfolio review event near you by artists who work in a field that you have an affinity towards.

You could also ask the admissions offices at good art schools about recommendations for portfolio reviews. Heck, some of them may even have free portfolio review days for potential students. No matter how selective an art school is, admissions for that school will help you find the best resources to maximize your chances at gaining entry into their schools. Just remember to not sign any paperwork that states you will be attending their school.

I'm having trouble in find a confortable brush setting for my drawings (I use SAI for most of them).

The problem I'm having is that I spend more time cleaning the drawing than actually drawing stuff. It's normal taking the double amount of time drawing on tablet than drawing with pencil? Or it improves when the time goes on? (It's been 1 month since I began "converting" to digital).

This is nice, better than I can do for sure, but you lost a lot of interesting nuances. (You did not lose them from simplifying. The simplification is fine.) The line between the forehead and hair is more skewed than you've drawn. The sides of the chin are thicker. The shadow under the right eye is thicker. That line you have to give the nose depth, doesn't exist. I'm not saying this because I think you need to be super accurate; I'm saying this because I don't want you to throw away the unusual parts of the reference.

in the black guy, the main features of the face definitely look like symbols and not what your eye is actually seeing. wanted to say when you posted but never got around to it.

firstly, you changed the perspective on him. in the photo he's looking slightly more up and slightly turned more away from the camera. this made you get some things more wrong and also resort to symbol drawing like the nose, lips, eye, and the ear. a lot of proportions are off because of how you drew the angle. the forehead profile is not the same either. the far eye is lower but doesn't seem to be following perspective as again you've resorted to a lot of symbols for the facial features and messed up the rotation of the subject.

Too many things, I think. I like painting and lineworks. Landscapes and animals, primarily. Not huge fan or portraiture or people in general, I think. I like stylized people, like comics and whatnot though so I figure I'd need to learn people regardless. For western comics, I like Daniel Warren Johnson and Geof Darrow. Eastern would probably be Inoue, Miura, or Sakamoto. For the animals I like the anatomical dissection natural history museum pieces and whatnot. Painting is too broad but scifi/fantasy generic stuff is cool. I also enjoyed the technical drafting from manuals from the military - so technical linework.
Now, I know these things are what I like to look at now and things I think I would enjoy drawing, but I can't draw a fucking circle. I really don't know what the progression for art and the relation between subjects are so I don't know if I'm just uber-fucked from starting too late and people other places just tend to default to "ur never too old to achieve ur dreams" stuff.
I figure if I was going to give it a go, finding a course on the basics would at least translate between all the random shit I want to make. Apologies for word vomit.

>Are there any structured art courses for getting me started that aren't shit?
Unfortunately not. I found myself in a similar predicament. Working through a small selection of Bargue plates accurately will really help draftsmanship and rendering.

First comes the basics with Peter Han
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

I highly recommend this series to just get going drawing lines. (As you watch tutorials you're going to learn to watch at 1.5-2x speeds)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aor_xEW21R0&list=PLXkHosWORUv6bxfPGz31WESqw_87adQ5r

Then you want books. This could be Vilppu, Loomis, Hampton, or other "beginner" books like Keys to Drawing but nothing gives the structure you want. Vilppu really clicked for me in a way the others never did but it's still very much meant for you to progress on your own.

After you've done a few introductory exercises you can dive right into Bargue (lessons start at 4 and 7 but it's good to get context for what you'll be doing)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6lCvz1IiW8&list=PL3aPoNPQSJnSJVw2_GUVR7jC0nbnksq6F
This is a timely process and it is hard work. Hopefully with some of the gesture drawing practice you've learned to train your eye. It's mentally taxing but the rewards are very nice. It's up to you were you want to finish but the important thing is that you finish your work. It won't be great, it won't be perfect, you'll see in a year that you're embarrassed by it but finished work what you should be aiming for. If you want to do something, do it and keep working until you can do it up to your standards.

her right/our left eye seems a little high. look up how others have tackled lips. you'll want some combination of small highlights and then a degree of darker value for the crevices of the lips. this really depends on what she's wearing. it could be a clearcoat and those dark spots could be more visible or lipsticj and they'll be more of a midtone or not there. depends on how you want to style it. i'd recommend doing studies on that by itself. also i wouldn't be doing the lips until i got values for the hair

the eyes are not to level, the eyes brows are not symmetrical, the nose looks like a booger, and lips needs to be slightly more symmetrical

right: it resembles a woman so you did that right, but its symbol drawing, the proportions but i guess if you entirely did this for some sort of super stylized thing then i guess i cant say the neck is too thin
the shape of the face itself is fine, it just needs literally everything else done right, like shading and not just symbol drawing every part of the face

1. Your main issue is line confidence → it looks very scratchy. Turn up the stabliser to at least 6, I used 6 on my intuos S. Lowering the stroke opacity to about 60-80% will make it look better too, but beware if you aren't careful while filling you will be left with weird bits because of the transparency
2. Your hands are not appropriately confident, animu hands need to look a lot like pic related to look good → long flowing curved strokes with no breaks for the lines between the digits
3. Bigger tablets do yield better lineart, I recently switched from an intuos S to an intuos M and found that my work was a bit less messy (I say a bit because I'd prefer to be a renderfag then spend 10 hours getting lineart right) and I don't have the autistic level of dedication to get lineart right.
4. The fags who do autistic level lineart are more likely to use the vector mode but I find it prohibitive when drawing.
