Post an exaple of your work or a figure you don't understand and try to articulate your problem a bit better.

>> No.3243333

God damn OP can you actually not figure it out? it's not hard

Boxes are easier to handle in perspective than organic shapes
Construct the figure out of these boxes so you get a good sense of proportion and form
and then detail the organic shapes in afterwards

It's a method of construction

(also it doesn't have to be just boxes, the idea is to use simple shapes, they're easier to manage)

Mentally rotate the box to the right angle. Draw the box. Put the body part in the box.

Let me tell you something about this box thing.

Learning to draw involves a lot of things. One of these things is being comfortable with your material so that you can think of the drawing alone. Another one is to study each object separately, so that if you are to draw something you never really paid attention to you can learn how to study it by yourself. And yet another thing is to be comfortable with perspective and with tridimensional shapes.

Using boxes helps mainly in two things. First because it helps for you to start with what is simple and build towards what is complex, second is because it helps to see things in three dimensions within your drawing.

There are plenty of ways to draw a body in boxes and cilinders, or a machine, or an animal, etc. You can study them and learn a lot from all of them. In your own personal drawing you'd like to first grab the logic of it, so that you are comfortable drawing cubes anywhere on the page and make it look convincinly in perspective. This way you can focus on what you are drawing, you'll feel confident that you can reproduce it. The second is that you are able to develop your own ways of seeing the simple in what is complex. Although you use the methods you've learned as a tool, it is more of a matter of observing, say a human body, and be able to see where everything fits in perspective or how much this part is bigger than the other, their angles and so on.
