IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Why is drawing from life so fucking hard
i've been doing it for about 4 months now and i still fuck up the various proprtions of a fucking chair. When i try to draw the general shape of a thing i end up symbol drawing, but when i try to draw by focusing execively on following the ''lines'' i tend to fuck up the proportions because i lose track of the general shape

btw can someone tell me the point of drawing from life? isn't it just better to start of learning construction and just draw whatever you want from there on?

I especially want to be able to draw female figures, so I'd like to receive some critique on this if you see anything that is off or have anything you'd improve. I still cannot draw hands, and I notice that the left girl's face looks kind of odd (the further side is wrong) and her thorax is twisted (since i'm trying to use perspective on it).
I used my mirror image as a reference to see how a human's back works.

How in the living fuck do you adjust multiple layers in Photoshop. In SAI all i have to do is link them with a red pin and i can adjust colors on all of them at once. I tried to google an answer and its like fucking rocket science and i still cant get it to work in photoshop.

I'm trying to do it in PS btw because its superior to SAI for color/levels adjustments.....but i like have to do each layer one at a time and try to remember what the fuck i did so i can do it to the others. I don't know about you, but for me it helps when I draw animals if I know how to break them down into simple shapes.

So, with horses, you're going to want to break them down differently than a human. You'll mostly work out how to do it from working from reference images, but they work a lot different from people. (This is actually where I am having a lot of difficulty. I understand how to draw animals fine, but struggle with human form because the shapes are so different.)

Additionally, with a horse and rider image, the rider is going to be sitting just behind the withers (the top of the horse's shoulder) as that is where the center of balance is, and also where they will stress the horse's back the least. Your rider is positioned toward the mid-back, near the end of the horse's ribcage, and would cause enormous pressure on the horse's back. He would both be more likely to injure his mount, and fall off because both he and the horse will be out of balance.

So, I guess keep using references and doing studies and shit until drawing something from imagination comes easy and you aren't guessing how something should go anymore.

I'm not doing proper studies, this is all no ref except the last link
you *can* do the same drawing a second time. in fact alternating between reference and imagination is a good way to absorb knowledge, applying what you've seen, then correcting it, etc. but when people mention "studies", that's what it is. you run a big risk of turning to symbol drawing by repeating the same drawing over and over, as has been said above.
>But it's a lot of time and effort
yes, yes it is. at least trying to actually progress.

>> No.3227141

>>3227097
Very nice. At the very least you've shown that you shown you have the ability to go through with something painfully dull and internalize what you needed to internalize.

But yeah as what other people said. I wouldn't do a study of a piece in a row more than 2-3 times before switching to another angle. Then come back to it again in 2 days, then again in 5 and again in a week just to solidify it in long term memory.

It'll take a longer time span to get your 18 studies of legs, but it will become more natural, studying will be more interesting as it's not just that one dull study as you'd be putting studies of other things in bewteen and you would be less prone to keeping it just in your short term memory.

and for the chicken lines, just trust your hand. do the trace you want to do a few times with the tip of your pencil close to the paper but not touching, this will get your hand "ready" to do it. thats it.

beginners use chicken line to constantly do small corrections on the lines and to hide mistakes. let that go, if you fuck you, you fuck up, but do 1 confident line.

Ballpoint is a pretty tough medium when you're starting out. I recommend sticking to pencil. Make sure you use construction - LOOMIS - (you do not need to read every single page all at once, just focus on the head and facial construction at first) . Also, mainly use the overhanded pencil holding technique to draw. A good tip is to not draw lines with the tip of the pencil: use the side, this will allow you to create broader 'lines' which are easier to erase.

I had considerable gains within 8 months by drawing at least one face each day. I had a couple weeks off throughout when I really wasn't feeling it. In order to improve you need to compare and contrast between your drawing and your ref. At first don't practice imagination, do that at a later, improved state, right now you don't have the visual library to base your sketches off of.

Good luck! If you really want to be a competent draftsmen and not disappoint your future self you'll reach a point where you will be slightly proud of your work - then you'll realise its not good enough and you'll want to improve. But at that point it gets easier as the results from your daily sketches show your learned knowledge in at least one aspect. Remember that you don't have to rush either, people online like to show off and do speed paints but you need to remember that they have years of experience. I hope I helped :)

art blog because no art friends

It's so fucking hard to render the face properly. I have no direction whatsoever.
I studied face structure but I have issues with blending, controlling the brush and knowing what to do next. It also

does not help that I can't form everything properly giving the sense that I didn't finish anything. I've been trying

different appoaches just trying to complete the face and I realized maybe the issue lies with two things. The fact

that I cannot finish a piece and my inexperience with using the brush since I just transitioned from traditional

drawing with lines. To remedy this, I will temporarily attempt pixiv drawings that I find aesthetically pleasing.

Ones that does alot of realistic painting on the entire piece except the face which looks animu as fuck and also

leaving outlines and using it creatively (loosely). This will allow me to finish pieces to regain confidence and

practice brush control and blending as well. I can start with just simple poses and clothing maybe fanart

A: the line on the nose is too dark or just shouldn't be drawn at all. since its a highlight you either ignore it if just sketching, or color it a lighter tone if coloring.

B: this kinda touches back on the idea of the line weight, but also you should take note on the fact that the eyelid has a crease you need to include.

C: you made the irises too small and, by doing so you did the same to the pupils, if you look at the ref, the irises just about touch both top and bottom of the eyelids.

D: The gap for the cupid's bow is too wide.

E: Because of the problem in "C," the eyebrow is just a bit low.

F: The butt chin is not quite as defined as you have it.

If i see anything else i'll let you know, but overall this looks quality, good job :)

it's good. this shit is just to make people who have never drawn before try to draw for the first time. It's just loosen up before you get into the lessons. You can finish the book and try it again if you want, but this lesson is just there for that specific purpose.

Even if your drawing barely resemble it, you still can move on to the next lesson in the book.

Remember to read every note and try to at least somewhat understand what the purpose of the lesson is before you move on.

I started with the same book. Skim it the first time and redid again after doing a bunch of life drawing for a month. It's a good book to start learning how to draw but it's not the answer to everything.

Nostril is too small. When it comes to black people it's usually the nose. But it shows form and you're getting rid of your symbol by doing it. Good job on that.

Also group the dark parts into one. Then start shading darker tone within those dark parts. Think of as shadows within shadow.

Don't be afraid to experiment and push the values. It would help if you have a darker pencil.

R8 & H8. (Also critique)

Any tips for constructing 3d shapes? I'm wondering how to get leg placement that looks super nice.

i struggle with discipline outside of classroom settings when it comes to art, but any online one is 800 dollars. I'm not trying to make it, i just want as a hobby. Are there any free courses that someone can recommend? I liked how peter han's video and assignments were.

I rly rly like these & think you capture personality well - they feel alive, which is something I value a lot in reference copying. you've evidently practiced some things more than others haha, but I think you have become very adept at those parts.
the whole outline of the head still feels like a flat shovel & I'm not sure whether that's because you're not practicing shading there yet; I'd recommend at least giving it a shot, I think you're ready for it. hyperawareness of getting the features' placement & angles correct (eg. in second image eye on our right doesn't align with the left like in the reference) will help to avoid the classic 'flat symbol drawing' look.

>>3227187
i think you got too used to drawing the head being positioned at a particular angle to the shoulders (ie. straight on), & didn't capture the essence of the pose?
I think the bear fur has great stylisation & shape though (I am not particularly skilled either so this may be incorrect)
you might want to reduce this one into a 30-second, etc. study to not get stuck on details

>>3226996
for this example alone, you want to be aware that that stretch of left muscle is pretty much a tube of even length. from there the rest of the waist got misjudged. I think you captured the essence pretty on the mark apart from that slip-up

>>3227132
proportions are going well! I think you could benefit from going back to boxy construction

>>3227215
as a not-particularly-skilled artist: I find small "must-dos" like "hold your pencil this way", "use this layer mode" are kind of losing sight of the real key to improvement. if it's uncomfortable, it's not worth it. and that's how I'm pretty certain I'm getting carpal tunnel
For a first time it's going well & I really like the chick in the top-right. I think at this point the only thing is to keep going & be tough on yourself with what you don't like. I think that in early stages the only time to start worrying is when you find you're stagnating.
